A castle, a village, Lunas

One view.
Another view.

In Lunas, overlooking the village from the Redondel rock, a castle is quoted as 806 in a charter of the abbey of Gélone, succeeding a Gallo-Roman oppidum. The medieval castle built in the same place in the 12th century, in 1118, demolished in 1627, was replaced by the present castle present castle 17th century, built in 1641 on bank of the Gravezon.

Castles of Lunas, history.
Lunas and Lunas history.

LUNAS is a french municipality, located in the department of Hérault of the Languedoc-Roussillon area, populated of 651 Lunassiens in 2009, distributed out of 44.9 km², that is to say 14.5 hab./km².

The territory of the Lunas municipality is crossed by the ORB coastal river, including one of its tributaries, the Gravezon, through the village.

_ The ORB, coastal river, takes its source at 828 meters of altitude, close to the site “Font d'Orb”, in limit of the communes of Cornus in Aveyron departement, and Romiguières in Hérault departement, in dolomitic limestones of "Causse du Larzac". It runs in the departement of Aveyron, then in the department of Hérault, and flows in the Mediterranean sea at Valras-Plage, after a course of 136 km, and the crossing of a catchment area of 1585 km². Its flow can pass from a minimal flow of 1.4 m³/s to a maximum flow of 1630 m³/s. Orb river description.

_ The CAUSSE of LARZAC is vastest and southernmost of "GRANDS CAUSSES", large causses. Its 1000 km ² of plateau rise from 600 to 900 meters. It is limited to the North-East by Dourbie river which separates it from "Causse Noir", in the North-West the Tarn river separates it from the plateau of Lévézou, in the west it stops with the depression of Roquefort. Its surface is strewn with famous sites with the military orders, Knights of the Order of the Temple and Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.

_ The GRANDS CAUSSES, in the south of the Massif Central, are delimited in north by the plateau of "Aubrac", in the east by the Cévennes, the south by the plain of the "lodévois", in the west by the plateau of "Lévézou". These are plateaus limestones whose altitude varies from 700 to 1250 meters of altitude, and of surface going up to 1000 km². The "Grands Causses" are formed by important "Causses of Larzac" (1000 km²), of "Sauveterre" (550 km²), "Méjean" (330 km²), and "Noir" (200 km²), but also of the causses "Comtal", "Rouge" and of "Sévérac", and many small peripheral causses like causses of "Mende", "Blandas", "Changefèges", "Bégon", etc… No waterway circulates on the surface of the plates, because the rainwater infiltrates in the karstic, generating networks of many swallow-holes and caves, to re-appear in the valleys. Hello Joël,
It looks very old this village nicely depicted in the sunlight. I like the point of view and the contrasting architectural styles. Also, the play of light across the façades, which brings out the colours and textures to such good effect.

Bonjour Joel ,

Roland

Hello Joel,

I just love the contrasts of light and shade in your photograph, they create a still, evening mood. The buildings are sharply revealed, with interesting textures and colours that add a little vibrancy. The features are well positioned, with the inclusion of the disappearing waterway for our imaginations to wonder about.

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Saluti
Carlo

Hello Joel,
Very beautiful and very interesting old architecture excellently executed. Wonderful composition and great framework. Tfs.
All the best,
Barbara

Philippe

hello Joel,
This is an 'inviting' picture with the warm light amongst the shadows. Beautiful old architecture and a lovely green BG. I very much enjoyed viewing this.
Kind Regards, Ann

Bonsoir Joel,
a great presentation of this antique, picturesque and introvert village. Your composition includes a lot of architectural details and eloquent textures. Depth and clarity are excellent and the colours absolutely natural and eloquent too. Lighting is superb, I particularly enjoy the smooth transfer from light to shadow and the many lighting variations all over the place. The workshop pictures are very useful complements to this view. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Hi Joël,
A very pleasant view and a well taken picture. There are only a few colours here, in the window shutters and a matching bush. A very attractive sunshine over the the scene and what looks like an open air restaurant.
Kind regards
Gunnar

Bonsoir Joel,
The place taken from a super POV, show greatly the buildings on the old town. But, I'd ask the same question already asked Christiane, wondering why many French villages on rural country appearing on TE pictures when nobody is out on the streets and feel an "empty" ambiance. Here I can see a cafe' wher nobody sits at time take, a vacation maybe...?
The picture is outstanding, do not get me wrong, just had this in mind for long.
Au revoir,
Ike

Hi Joel
this looks like an amazing place to take photos.
so much old charm and history in these buildings.
the rustic nature, and how they look like they are about to fall apart is the real appeal for me :)
love the window shutters too.
great shot and subject
cheers
craig
