St Nicholas was born in the ancient city of Patara, in what is now Turkey, but was then the Eastern Roman Empire, in the 4th century AD.
He then became the bishop of the ancient region of Lycia, and died in Myra, near the modern city of Demre.

He is well-known as being the Patron Saint of children, as he is said to have saved three children from murder during a period of famine. In general, he is famous for bringing help to people in difficulty.
He then became the saint who rewarded the good children with presents and punished the bad children.
This tradition used to be celebrated on DECEMBER 6TH, the supposed date of his death, and still is in Northern European and Orthodox countries.
But in other countries, it was gradually transferred to Christmas Eve, and St Nicholas became Santa Claus, which merged with the popular figure of Father Christmas.

The fresco on the photo dates back to the 11th century, and is situated in St Nicholas's church, Demre, currently under renovation.
The person representing St Nicholas is probably the character in the niche at the bottom : He is usually depicted as an elderly man, with a short, full, white beard and balding head.

The technique used here was "FRESCO-SECCO" as opposed to "BUON FRESCO" in which the painting is done on damp plaster , thus becoming part of the wall.
FRESCO-SECCO done on dry plaster was less durable, but allowed more time for the realisation, and retouching.
All the same, I think this FRESCO-SECCO, 1000 years old, has not done too badly !!!

J'apprécie votre visite, Marie Louise.
Un "mur de sainteté" caractérisé par les couleurs douces des oeuvres qui s'harmonisent parfaitement aux teintes de la pierre pour un effet d'apparition en semi-transparence!
Amicalement.
Robert

Hi MarieLouise,

A very nice photo of this fresco. I do not think you could take a much better photo of it and definitely the best one of your four pictures. I think it was the lighting that make look very good and natural. I really liked as soon as I saw the thumbnail and I was not disappointed when I saw the full size picture. TFS and have a nice evening!

Kind regards,

Ulf

Hello Marie-Louise,
Saint Nicholas is considered as the Saint Protector of Ukraine's people, especially children. Since 1991 we celebrate Dec. 19 (Dec. 6, according to the old calender) as Saint Nicholas' Day. Thanks for the interesting visual and textual information about our "Grandfather Frost", who has come from warm Turkey!
Best regards,
Sergiy

Bonsoir MarieLouise
Un très bon rendu de ces teintes en douceur nuancées.Comme une musique douce.

Hello Marie-Louise,

What a strange feeling there is to this painting..!
Probably because of the special light and old age, it is almost a spooky atmosphere...
An interesting documentary of this 1000 years fresco, fainted but still telling the story and I'm happy you didn't do some photoshop cosmetics!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Marie Louise,
Since you mentioned this in your critique, I decided to take a peek. Isn't it a pity these frescoes did not survive too well? I wonder if anyone would venture to restore them.
Thanks for preserving a piece of history.
Regards,
MT
