A window cleaner takes a breather in Rue des Changes, in Toulouse, the pink city or 'la ville rose'. This busy, narrow street is the continuation of Toulouse's best known shopping street, and its only street without cars, the rue de Saint-Rome.

Looking north in the direction of the great Place du Capitole, at 4 Rue de St-Rome is the Tour de Serta, a surviving medieval monument to the pastel trade, of which Toulouse was the leading European centre in production and trade in the 15th and 16th century. The tower, demonstrating why this city's nickname is La Ville Rose, is one of the few remaining medieval mansions connected with the merchants who became rich from the pastel industry. The blue dye obtained by crushing the pastel plant made Toulouse itself wealthy during this period. The tower dates from 1529 and is named after Pierre de Serta.

There are numerous half-timbered buildings in rue de Saint-Rome, but as usual in an old town one must look up, up, and up, if one wishes to see more than the usual clothing chain-shops, colourful as they may be. There are many tiny lanes running off this long snaking street which changes its name several times, and it's easy to get away from the incessant thumping muzak.

Nice one Andrew. A bustling scene which reminds me of the History books we used at Carwash, where the people shown in Mediaeval towns were depicted doing their thing, befitting their station in life. I like the narrow format which accentuates the nature of the town. The light is generous on this occasion as it eliminates any dark areas at ground level.Often narrow lanes are difficult to photograph on a sunny day. Regards. Klaudio.

Hello, Andrew!

The vertical format of your picture is good to emphasize how narrow the street is. It has so much life with all these people walking and working. Great colors! Well done!

hi Andrew,
an attractive POV of this famous Toulouse street : a good light, bright colours, the red sign on the top of the picture. And above all we really feel the liveliness of this pedestrian street full of shops.

Hello Andrew,
A good capture of this busy street; makes for an image full of vitality enhanced by the two characters in the foreground. I like also te interesting architecture in the background. Very good colours and sharpness.

Hi Andrew,
Great verticle composition.
Very busy streetscape.
Nice sharp clean clear shot.
Thanks for the note.
Cheers,
Graham.

Bonjour Andrew,
Ton image ressemble par certains côtés à ma publication du jour : une rue avec une personne sur une échelle ;o))
Si "ta" rue est animée, la mienne est quasiment déserte dans la belle ville d'Innsbruck.
Well done !
Mes amitiés
Pierre

Hi Andrew,
the mood of Rue Saint-Rome is excellently captured and it is not only the atmosphere of this busy street (all people seem to be in a hurry!) that makes this impression very attractive, it is also this fascinating architecture. This is a very tight and atmospheric impression. TFS!
Warm regards
Harriet

Hi Andrew, what a lively, sharp and colourful image. The vertical frame was ideal, I love the guy up the ladder and your management of the issues of shade is just the bee's knees. Great job, Lisa.

Startlingly clear and colourful! The vertical format is perfect for this busy scene, and the ladder is an essential element.
Best wishes,
Winifred

Hello Andrew,
I think that the town of Toulouse is not easy to photograph. you however succeeded in making an original image testifying to the medieval past and the current dynamism. A good light, beautiful colors. Cheer.
Have a nice sunday.
Cordially.
Joël

Bonsoir, cher Andrew,
Voilà une photo qui pétille de vie. L'ambiance générale est parfaitement reproduite. De plus, la joliesse des bâtiments constituant cette voie semi-piétonne est manifeste.
Très belle réalisation.

Fantastic colored street view.
Many things all together all close... I like it!
Well done, un saluto

Hello Andrew,

A bustling street so typical of many French cities.
The cyclist coming towards the camera has a big impact; then only slightly second is the window cleaner. We cannot help but follow his gaze to discover what is so interesting to him! It is only after we have satisfied our curiousity about the people that we rest a little and notice the interesting, medieval architecture. As someone extremely interested in history, I felt almost guilty that I had not noticed it immediately!
You can tell that I think your details are very well captured! The light and the sharpness also contribute well to this interesting shot.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Andrew,
A very good street photo, full of life and colour and various kinds of architecture.
Light management, colours and sharpness are all first class.
Kind regards,

Bonjour Andrew
Bonne image de cette scène de vie dans cette rue bien encombrée avec cet escabot sur la droite,je suppose que celui qui l'utilise ne doit être bien tranquille.Bon choix d'exposition de cette rue avec un ciel bien rendu.
Bonne journée

Hello Andrew, Nice narrow street full of life with people going about their daily chores, highlighted by the medieval tower. I always found it very difficult managing the light in these type of settings but you have done it very well with a good even exposure, I like the colouring, strong yet very natural looking.
thanks also for the informative note.
Cheers
Santo

Hello Andrew!

This is the real life, a capture that freezes a moment in life, filled with everyone in their own works and life.

A good point of view to compose this colourful scene, very good and with plenty of details...good work!!

Have a nice week.

Best regards

Manuel

Bonjour Andrew.
Certains n'auraient pas fait la photo trouvant que la rue était trop animée mais toi tu as su intégrer l'animation à la perspective de la rue chargée d'histoire et d'anciennes constructions.
Beau travail !
Amical salut !
Jacques

Hi Andrew

An interesting daily life shot. Great technical range here. Lots of detail for the eye to explore. Even though it is static there is lots of action in this shot.

TFS,
Tosca

Hello Andrew,
somehow I missed this bright colourful photo which shows us a street full of life and energy! IMHO, it is very difficult to take photos in such lighting and "other" conditions - especially when people walk or rush by... Very good perspective, a nice scene filled with a good mood :)
Best regards
and warm greetings from grey autumnal Moscow,
Elena
