Intro: | "Observe in the manner of the scientist, savor in the manner of the artist." (From the book, Math and the Mona Lisa about Leonardo.) Greetings, my name is Bulent Atalay. I live in the United States, where I am a professor of physics, and on the side an artist, author and lecturer. After publishing technical papers in theoretical physics that no more than eighteen people around the world would have had the interest to read, I started writing about the intersection of art and science, mathematics and art... In 2004 Smithsonian Books published my book, Math and the Mona Lisa, now in 13 languages. Then in 2009 National Geographic Books published Leonardo's Universe, which is now in two languages English and Japanese. I am now collaborating with my former student and good friend, Keith Wamsley, a classicist, on Isaac Newton, who was the greatest mathematician and scientist in history. The book will be entitled "The Miracle Year," and the publisher is again National Geographic Books. My newest undertaking is in writing blogs for the National Geographic Society. I have been given a great deal of latitude (almost too much perhaps) to write about astronomy, art, archaeology, history, science... and all the other topics on which I write or give lectures. "You need only to observe... and ponder, and the commonplace become wondrous, and the wondrous commonplace." These lines are also from 'Math and the Mona Lisa.' This dictum worked for Leonardo who has been called the most relentlessly curious man in history." In shooting photos, I believe, we can all learn from Leonardo, as well other great artists. After all they developed techniques of composition, perspective, light management... just as important for painting as they are for good photography. My personal website, created at the behest of my publishers, is Bulent Atalay.
