May 19: Road Trip to Seward

After an accidentally formatted memory card (was able to recover almost all of the photos) and a ”Lens Error“ on my Canon PowerShot (still to be resolved), I am back from Hawaii. I am going to wait until winter to publish the Hawaii photos so that they can warm our hearts during the cold winter days. So, I am continuing with my Alaskan photos.

We spent most of May 19 on the bus, travelling from Denali National Park to Seward. Our first stop was the Alaska Veterans Memorial. The memorial honors Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Alaska National Guard, and Merchant Marine veterans from Alaska, as well as specific Alaskans who were awarded the Medal of Honor. It also includes small memorials to the passengers and crew of military plane crashes in Alaska.

The main alcove of the memorial consists of five 20-foot (6.1 m) upright concrete slabs, each with a large star cut through the upper section and a description of a branch of the Armed Forces history in Alaska inscribed on the lower section. An inscribed plaque at the entrance honors the Alaska National Guard and the unpaid volunteers of the Alaska Territorial Guard, which filled in for the National Guard when it was mobilized during World War Two. The sculpture at the front of the alcove (in the center of this photo) depicts two members of the Territorial Guard watching for threats with binoculars. The plaque to the left, partially included in this photo reads: “We dedicate this quiet place to the remembrance of the veterans of Alaska who have served their country at home and throughout the world. We honor their heroism and dedication.”

The workshop for this entry includes:
Keeping Watch over Denali: The view that the two Alaskan guards see with their binoculars: Denali.
Remembering Each Branch: A close up view of the monoliths commemorating the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and the Coast Guard. Stitched from three photos.

19 Mayıs'ta otobüsle Denali Milli Parkı'ndan Seward'a seyahat ettik.

Hi Murat

Welcome back. I like the glimpses of bg vegetation through the star shaped holes in the memorial wall. Good sharpness and the Spring colors enliven the scene. Tfs!

Hi Murat
Thanks for the detailed explanation: I think you have captured something special. A moving and fantastic tribute to those young men who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of their country. Your patience is paid off as the lady in red helps to engage the viewer's attention on the forever frozen sculpture creating a nice balance & vital focal point. Beautifully captured, definitely makes you think and remember more importantly. Very interesting subject, so very well handled.
Best regards

Bravo et amitié
Nicou

Hello Murat,
The monument is quite stylish and you managed to take three photos that give us very different impressions of it. The stitched WS could also have done well as a main upload, but this one is photographically more dynamic. We get closer and the yellow trees make a greater impact. And we have the lady in read.
Regards,
Gert

Hi Murat,
interesting statue of soldiers in the field amidst the names of all those young men who for their country.
Thanks and regards,
Gerrit

Each of the three posts can give good idea about the monument and the memorial complex, Murat.
The statue, after examined, looks beautiful from local grey rock. Though, I'd try a close-up picture from two meter distance upon, to have full impression of.
Good afternoon,
Ike
