[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
In the autumn of 1988 I made a five weeks tour of mainly southern India.

I have already - recently and years ago - posted several photos from that journey, but I keep steadily digging up more, every time I look through my old files of scanned photos.

Today's three pictures were taken on Chamundi Hills, just outside the city of Mysore in Karnataka state. The peak of the forested hill at 1000 meters above sea level contains a large temple area. It is possible to go there by any kind of vehicle, but I preferred to take an auto-rickshaw only to the foot of the hill and climb the 1000 steps through jungle to the top. I wanted to see a huge statue of a bull at the 700 meters level. I finally made it to the top soaking with sweat.

(My photos of the bull were useless. It was surrounded by some kind of scaffolding and a "viewing platform".)

Today's main photo shows the 17th century gopalam, gate tower, of the Chamundeshwari temple. There was a long queue of people waiting to get in, and I rejected an offer to pay a "guide" to get in through a side entrance, so I didn't see the inside of the temple, which didn't bother me the least. I had seen several interesting temples in Tamil Nadu state before I arrived here, and there was so much else that interested me in the outside area.

This photo is a bit tight at the top. I apologize for that. In a WS you can see a nice woman, while another WS shows a saleswoman (also perfectly nice).

All photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides. Here is a larger version of the main one.

Hi Gert

Some scenes like this are almost timeless and could have been taken yesterday or as in this case, in 1988. I might have taken a vehicle to the summit and walked down the hill rather than up. I know from my time in Thailand and Malaysia what high humidity + heat is. A magnificent temple with good sharpness and the orderly queues to get in animate the scene. Tfs!

I saw a temple with this style in my trip, only one. this closer view is impressive and we can enjoy each detail. looks like a kind of indian baroque. I liked the WS, the lady with coconut has a better quality but the other scene is very beautiful too.

take care

Hej Gert,
Et udmærket billede af tårnet ved templet og de mange smukke detaljer og statuer rundt omkring bygningen, som ser meget godt od klart ud i det fine lys. De små flag i forgrunden giver en festlig atmosfære til billedet.

Photographycally perfect and enriched with many good and usefull notes.
TFS and have a nice weekend

Hello Gert, your famous time machine once again! Keep it working.
These gopalam are simply amazing, I can’t believe how many there are, and every one showing incredible artwork and skill.
A lovely sharp shot. The people add colour, scale and movement.
The two additional pictures are delightful too, thank you.
Kind regards

Hi Gert,

The presenc eof the people is animating the scene. The point of view is showing a double perspective of the architecture of the gate tower of the Chamundeshwari temple. The colors and the sharpness are very good. Have a nice day.

A very good photo taken with an analog camera, I hope this gate tower with rich decorations is well preserved for so many years until today, a very nice documentary photo
regards Ryszard

Ciao Gert
il tempio è molto bello anche all'esterno e così hai potuto trovare anche la donna molto carina....direi che forse ci hai guadagnato.
È sempre un piacere vedere le foto del tuo archivio.

India as well as Burma are a couple of the only countries in Asia where still so many wear traditional clothes. This could have e been taken in 2018 rather than 30 years ago. For the rest much has change in India not only for the good in my opinion.
Fascinating scans you have in your time machine.

Hi Gert,it's a temples time on TE, i seen a lot in the last month, and this is another one but from an old pic. Excellent prospect and good quality, but i like a lot your words about the details of the flower seller and the family around about the sharpness..ehehe...in effect it's too late to make different..ehehe...have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello Gert,

THis is a very impressive building, in height and in decoration! And, this is only the gate tower!
You have been able to capture the entirety in one shot and we are able to observe each layer of its decoration, like working your way up a very elaborate wedding cake!
It doesn't surprise me that there are so many people eager to discover more about this temple!

The lady looks very beautiful and very elegant, full of serenity as she is lost in thought. Though the b/g is blurred, it looks as if all the people are barefooted. Is this natural or spiritual?

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert,
Interesting view of gate tower of the Chamundeshwari temple, nice architecture.
A great portrait of this woman, of course, the saleswoman of thoughts.
Your photo archive is invaluable.

Gert, I never visited that place located on hills not far from Mysore. The people are standing in line to enter to the sanctuary. The huge gopuram is impressive, it is decorated by flags, garlands of flowers at its base. The rock has been carved like lace, statues are placed on each storey. Excellent scan quality.

Ciao Gert, great view of fantastic architecturelovely composition with a lot of peoples, fine details, wonderful colors, splendid light and excellent clarity, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hello Gert,

How wonderful that your time machine is still working - so I am presuming that you still have more boxes of slides still to be scanned, edited and presented here: if so, please keep them coming!

Again a fine note and a fine trio of photographs to illustrate it. I think your choice of main image was correct - that hugely tall and impressively decorated gate tower just had to take pride of place - but I actually prefer your two workshop images, one of a rather elegant lady and the other of, I think, a lady selling flowers.

And all excellent scans of fine Kodachrome images too.

Kind Regards,

Hello Gert,
I like the workshop photos more, especially the "nice woman." I love their colors and blurred backgrounds. The main entry is nice, too but unfortunately, all of the did not fit in your frame. Back then, you couldn't just take another photo and stitch them together later. 👍🏻👍🏻

Hello dear Gert and have a nice time
and a happy new week
its the first time I see something
like this
this complicated construction
is almost fantastic and worthseeing
really this closer view is unique

Hello Gert,

Thirty years ago you climbed 1000 steps in the hot and humid day and you traveled for five weeks. Pity, it would be impossible now, but it is life. I was on Chamundi Hill to see the big Nandi statue but I think I took a tuk-tuk.
amazing that all (or maybe many) pictures you took are so good, taking into account that the films were expensive. One had to be very careful with the choice of the moment. Nice also WS photos.

I am back home

Hi Gert
when I was in India, like you, I got to see many of these same style temples. They are just about everywhere all over the country. Looking at it, it must have taken a long time to create. Its good to see these temples on the side profile as you have taken your shot, bc we can see its depth and size more clearly. In the WS, i see basically everyone is barefoot...I wonder why, usually they are wearing at least some sort of sandle. Love the photo of the woman in deep thought, thats a good one! cheers

Hello Gert,
I think I was there on a Sunday and there was a very long queue. For once I have exercised patience.
But I still remember the many pushing and it was difficult to take pictures inside because of the many moving back and forth of the masses. I also remember that a lot of people gave sacrifices.
For some reason I only posted a picture of the Nandi and not of the gopuram.
At another point I did also the opposite: I took a bus up and later I descended on foot :)
The gate towers of the Hindu temples are always such a remarkable and impressive sights.
Very attractive daily life-shots in the WS!
Best regards, Paul

Hello Gert,
These temple towers are always impressive. The have so many intricate statues and details on them; this one is especially detailed at the top. The people look so tiny compared to the immense size and height of the tower, too.

Hi Gert
Another good one from your time machine. I'm always amazed at the complexity of the carving in this style of temple - masses of work needed.

hI Gert,
Superb photo of this beautiful place, the composition is very nice, great architectural details and the colours are beautiful, too.
Best regards

Hello Gert,
What a strange motivation has made people decide to construct these types of buildings. An almost endless repetition of ornament, probably here and there with small variations. I wonder if long garlands with flags were hung in the 17th century.
I looked at your 2 workshop photos with even more pleasure.
Have a nice day, groet Rob

Hallo Gert Of course this is a monumental work, richly crafted for an outstanding attraction. Its fading shape toward the sky is judiciously thought of for greater magnificence, but a tempting challenge for the illegal wall climbing exercise!! As usual, your copy of the Kodachrome comes out with a flawless quality. Don't be sad for having lost the opportunity to post pictures of the bull: You missed only many girls waiting in line for the opportunity to caress the masculinity of the beast, as a ritual to encounter later on more manliness!! I couldn't either in New York: Too many people around the bull in the business district! Haslningar

Nice and peculiar building. The framing and perspective help us show us its grandeur and details. Well done.

Dear Gert,

This time you chose the postcard over the nothing special. All the two WS photos are better in my view. The girl's portrait is for sure. Regarding the tight composition of the main photo, I guess you had a nifty-fifty, which is not ideal for city-scapes, but you managed to make the most out it.

Best Wishes,

Bonjour, cher Gert,

It's more important to include the scene at the bottom than the top of the temple so no apologies needed. ;-)
The colourful crowd and flags and the intricate carvings make for an exquisite combination and the two WS photos are a wonderful addition to the main shot.

Hi Gert,
Impressive and beautiful architecture, perfectly framed, good angle and nice sharpness, well made, tfs.

Hello Gert.
What's up friends? almost a month without being connected to these pages and has not been voluntary, but because of problems with my Internet provider, who have forced me to cancel the contract and start working with another, this takes its time unfortunately.

Impressive this gopuram entrance to the temple, a multitude of figures and ornaments until its final finish even more worked and those ornaments in metal, people give us the proportion of its great size.
Very nice colorful in very effective tones.
Good management of brightness and superb sharpness.
Magnificent image My congratulations.
All the best and have a good day.
