When, a year ago, my wife decided that we should go on a short sea cruise to the Norwegian fjords in April, I was excited at the prospect of visiting some interesting places but was a little concerned that I might be just a bit bored during our times at sea. But I need not have worried: each morning I was up and about with my camera long before breakfast, out again on deck after dinner to watch the sun go down, found interesting people to meet, lots of things to see and do - and generally had fun.

Other passengers, however, didn't seem to share my excitement!

I've not added map references today as I cannot give a definite location for these three images - but I know that they were taken as we passed the northwest coast of Scotland on our way from Liverpool to Norway.

ISO 100, 1/320 sec at f/4, focal length 70mm.

Hello John,
I have only ever been on a sea cruise whilst at work as an auditor, but I understand that many people go on such cruises to meet like thinking people and relax and this this is often secondary to the onshore visits. You present us with an interesting and amusing trio of images depicting just that. My favourite one is the lady enjoying her morning cigarette. All are perfectly realised with excellent colours and sharpness.

Hello John,
Some excellent shots of some of your fellow passengers on the cruise ship. I don't think the cruise ship company will use their portraits for their future advertisements. You captured these three people really well and put them very nicely together in this composition.

Hi John, great idea to spend time during the hours in the fjords cruising,in effect the show made by hills and trees is always the same,so it's nice to take a watch on the people doing the cruise too...hheh..great collage that means that this experience isn't the most exciting in the travel world..simply amazing!! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hello John,
These amusing photos could perhaps be described as "marine street-shots", just what you happened to see when going for a walk. A street in a town or the deck of a cruise ship doesn't make much difference. To be honest these persons' expressions tell me exactly why I would never contemplate going on a cruise. I would find most of it too terribly boring. But obviously there are times when it's great fun (at least if you have a camera at hand).
Kind regards,

hello John
Superbe ce montage photo, bien capté les attitudes de chacun.

Hello John,

The main picture with woman and sigaret speak book parts
This is real nice and a excellent character head of the woman.
A lovely subject to look at.
Nice sharp and clear photographed alsothe two other ladies.
Composition and presentation are superb. TFS.

Best regards,

Ha! Ha! John, so early in the journey, you must have been a little concerned about the quality of the interaction between yourselves and the other passengers. Seemingly, it all turned out fine as the adventure progressed.

Your title has a fine sense of irony!
I like how you have presented them as 'like-minded trio'!
My favourite study is the first, the lady with the cigarette! Is she plotting some verbal foray or just wondering what an earth she is doing on the deck of a ship heading north!
They are all fine individual shots in their own right.
I just wonder what would have happened if any of them had opened their eyes as you photographed them. Of course, it is well known that you take interesting shots to post on the Internet ... ostensibly to advertise the cruise line!

You have cheered me up!

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello John,
Three fantastic observations from three ladies on a cruise to the Norwegian fjords. They look like they have no idea what kind of a fascinating landscape they will see.
Especially the lady with her hand full of rings and her cigarette straight up between her fingers does not look like an experienced tourist.
Three really brilliant obsessions.
Have a nice day. Groet Rob

Ciao caro John, nice collage with relaxing scenes, in each photo wonderful colors, fine details and splendid clarity, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Bravo t amitié

Bonjour John,

Tu as su saisir trois beau moment de détente sur le vif. Il ne semble pas faire bien chaud pour faire une croisière. Mais elle semble bien reposante.

Hello John, two of the people are so tired, and the lady who is smoking looks totally bored!
Three lovely studies, your montage made me smile.
Love the title!
Regards Jean.

Hello John, This is a delightful set of the three nothing special pictures. You were quite a paparazzi here. I like especially the view of this elderly wealthy lady. She seems soooo bored. The other two are just sleeping. What to do?

I have never been on such a cruise and most probably I will never be, it seems to me that one does not see so much, and only the places relatively close to the shore. On the other hand, I like cruises on the big rivers. I was on the Yangtze four days cruise, also three days on the Mekong and one day on the Irrawaddy. One can observe the life on the shore of the river, fascinating. On the Yangtze, I saw the big cities that were abandoned because of the higher level of the river after filling the dam. It was a scaring view. My dream is to go on Volga and Mississippi.

Kind regards Malgo

Lovely sneaky & ironic pictures, John.
Wonderful capture of this crowd of hipsters!

Especially the top half is a real winner, I think it would have deserved a full post, at least.

Cheers & enjoy your weekend

Hello John,
You have captured these three characters so well. The candid images are very sharp and well exposed. I had a smile at these as in some ways it sums up cruising for me!
Glad that you found plenty to do and had fun - photographers rarely get bored.
All the best, Ann

Hello John,
Nice picturepack with 3 diefferent elements.
All of them taken with good pov and sharpness and selfexplanatory.
That's life !
TFS and have a nice weekend

Brilliant idea for a creative triptych. In conjunction with your note it really made me smile. This is a case of what seems tedious for some is fun for others - thanks to their aparent feeling of boredom you got some interesting subjects to take photos of. :-)

Ciao John
ottimo collage, quasi divertente, questi signori non sembrano essere molto interessati allo spettacolo dei fiordi, ma capisco che ci possono essere anche momenti di relax...

Hi Mr Martin Parr!

Great live (?) portraits in situation, having a rest is good also for health.
By the way, I just see a Martin Parr exhibition in Manchester and bought the book "return to Manchester".
hats off John! Direct in my favorites for sure.

Hello dear friend and have a nice time
and a happy new week
me too I love the cruises by ship
particularly during summer holidays

visit my gallery you can see moments
of sea cruises
I like the timing and the whole

Hi John
I'm back from my Spain/Portugal trip...yes, Portugal again (2017), because Joanne wanted to see it after me saying how beautiful and photogenic it was - so of course I'd say i'll go to portugal again. You sneaky devil you! Capturing photos of people while sleeping hahaha, but the lady smoking is my favourite. Did you ever get caught taking the shots, or did you ever show them after? haha. crisp and clear all the way.
