My next several uploads of photos from the streets of Leh will all be in black & white. I wouldn't have remembered I had these negatives unless I had read the diary from my visit to Ladakah in 1985, where at one point I mentioned that I had loaded my camera with a roll of B&W film.

There is very little I can say about these photos. I have no specific memories of taking any of them, because I spent a lot of time just walking mainly along the main street of Leh snapping quick shots of interesting persons I saw. There is nothing in my diary about any of these photos.

So here is a typical "nothing special" photo, unless you agree with me that politeness and mutual respect between people is always special. Since this was more than 33 years ago, I have a suspicion that these elderly gentlemen will never find out they have been on the internet.

Here is a larger version.

In one WS you can see a mother and child, in the other a lot of saleswomen. Today's photos were all scanned from Ilford FP4 negatives and may all be of some interest to lovers of film grain.

Hej Gert,

Hello dear Gert, my neighbour today
Just go ahead with those wonderfull b&w oldies, which fits perfectly to the mission of this site.
Again a perfect TE entry neriched with many interesting and usefull notes.
TFS and best regards

Hi Gert
I understand why you chose this as the main, the connection and interaction between them is probably what you enjoy the most.
For me, the market shot is my fav. In that one, I like the sign or advertisement (not sure what it is) on the pole in the bg, so funny seeing it there like that. and there is so much activity going on, its a great visual. but as I say, sweet moment captured here as well, more personable. cheers

Hi Gert
A good scan of this discovery in your archives and a delightful photo of these 2 old men.

Witaj Gert!
Wonderful b&w photo from Your archive.
Very interesting WS.
Great scenes from everyday life.
Very well done.
Nice day.

Hello Gert,
A simple composition whose success relies totally on the interaction between the two men, who have probably met by chance in the street. An image perfectly suited to black and white film.

Ciao Gert, beautiful B&W with nice scene, excellent clarity, fine details and splendid light, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hi Gert,

Very nice moment you captured here. The choose of B&W fits perfectly for this. Very well done.

Hello gert,

Three more photographs that I had great pleasure in perusing.
The open respect, in this greeting is something that I used to see regularly between my father and other men that he met but ... not so common nowadays. It is a define 'blast from the past'!
I remember comparing your last photographs with what I would experience at home and a cow, plus calf, walking down a main street, is definitely not anything possible! I suspect that, time moving on, this scene is still possible in modern times in India.
What a delightful shot you show us in the third photograph. The line of female food sellers reminds me of a lady choir! They all seem so close and so perfectly happy at what they are doing!

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Gert

The broken old wagon wheel embedded in the wall at top left is intriguing. A superb daily life shot in b&w with the 2 gentlemen exchanging pleasantries. Excellent sharpness and tonal range too. Tfs!

Bravo et amitié

Hello Gert

Well, you know me, I'm always drawn to monochrome, and it really seems to suit this sort of candid street photography. May I call this Ley Conversation? The decisive moment of the handshake is nicely caught. I'm surprised they didn't appear to notice you, a Westerner with a camera, poking his nose in! Glad you did, though.

Kind regards

Bonjour Gert,

Hello Gert,

Maybe two friends with tradional clothing
Three picture are a nice presentation in yor gallery.
Composition and presentation are excellent made.
Very well done, TFS.

Kindest regards,

Dear Gert,

This photo is very simple due to the plain background though very strong with the interaction of the two men as they shake hands and see into the eyes of each other.

Best Wishes,

PS: Good to hear the BW series is coming! :)

Hi Gert

Nice scene of meeting on the street, interesting, whether giving the hand was also a traditional greeting in those nations as in Europe
regards Ryszard

Hi Gert,
Interesting old photo, well taken with these men, good contrast in b&w, tfs.

Hello Gert, three informative pictures from your archives; the black and white presentation is perfect.
I think that you ought to return to these places so as to be able to make comparisons.
I particularly like the spontaneity of your pictures.
Thanks for sharing, regards Jean.

Hej Gert

Not sure about the bl/w (PP?) here, but the timing is just perfect and the handshake terrific. Nothing special? I beg to disagree!

Hi Gert,
I love old photos.
This scene is very charming.
Presentation is perfect to look at.

Hi Gert, the pics are dated 1985 but seems too old watching the style and the black and white and considering the life style too. Very very nice memories another time, opening by these 2 men that now watch your pic from the sky where now they are,and with the 2 street scenes in the WS,very interesting too. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Oi, Gert!

The black and white emphasizes that it is a photo of a long time ago. Actually for more than 33 years for my feeling
Through the expression of the men it seems an important handshake.
The two other pictures give a beautiful atmosphere with a lot of interesting details to discover.
Excellent work
Have a nice day. Groet Rob

Bonjour, cher Gert,

nice view of these old guys. a touching image of friendship and respect, sometimes older uncultured people are more polite than the educated youth. very nice image with an interesting graphic quality and the personages in dark clothes contrasting with the white walls around.

take care

Hi Gert,

You have cpatured well the interaction between the two men. The point of view is showing the details of their clothings. The sharpness is very good. Have a nice day.

Hello dear Gert
photos from so many years ago!!!
you wrote that you have no specific
memories but you spent a lot of time
just walking mainly along the main street
Yes it is a typical shot
with these human figures

Dobar dan.

Hello Gert,

Again a fascinating note and this time two monochrome workshop images which perfectly capture the goings on in these busy crowded streets of Leh while your main picture, perhaps taken just a sort way off the beaten track, perfectly depicts these two elderly gentlemen warmly greeting each other.

All three images are superb but I think your main image was a perfect choice, capturing the warm and respectful relationship between these two men. Are they greeting each other after not having met for many years or are they close friends who just happen to have bumped into each other this day? No-one will ever know.

Kind Regards,

Great moment captured, Gert, those elderly guys gave a polite greetings to each other, posing well for this photo.
You were on the right place and time.
Good evening and thanks for your supporting critique.

Hello Gert, Interesting scene on the street. I wonder if they still wear such traditional dresses? I could have such a bag :). But I like more the picture of the mother and child. No problem, we can see all there photos.

KInd regards MAlgo

Hi dear friend Gert
The beautiful shot of these two men is getting up. View of everyday life. The clarity and exposure are well done. With respect

Hello, Gert!

Very nice portrait of these men greeting in front of a wall with an old aspect that makes the scene even more interesting! The black and white is very good here, and the quality of the image is also very good for an old scanned photo! Well done!

Ciao Gert

Hello Gert,
I cannot remember to have met Hindus in Leh but in 1994 many muslim Kashmiri owned a shop there while Ladakhi women sold their wares in the streets.
It struck me a few weeks ago how many Kashmiri had a shop in Kochi, Kerala.
I can imagine that the street scene with the women would give a totally different picture in colour.
Your main photo creates an image of times gone by, I would think about 133 years ago.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Gert, very good black and white photo of this interesting scene of everyday life, very well captured in this interesting image, with good sharpness, light and quality. A great job perfectly done, my congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this interesting work.

Good afternoon and happy weekend.
All the best from the south of Spain.

Hello Gert,
Oh, Ilford, I remember that brand. My favorite photo among these three is the Mother and Child.

Another wonderful series, connected by the use of b&w medium. Here, you captured a special moment even if you classify the image as "nothing special" which has now become a brand rather than a simple phrase in English... ;-)
Have a nice weekend

Hello Gert,
I like this intimate moment between friends. It's a simple scene, but for me it conveys a lot of emotion. It's truly a photo worth seeing.

Gert, the two seniors are shaking hands in a street of Leh. They are wearing a traditional long clothing. I like the bag decoration. Pleasant scene from everyday life. Delightful black and white photo
