Every Wednesday, come hail, rain or shine, I head out for a country walk with a group of three or four equally ancient friends. Two weeks ago we did one of our favourite little six mile walks by Carmichael on a cold and frosty morning after some overnight snow. The sun was bright and warm, the day was windless and the sun shone brightly over a blanket of mist that hung over the lower ground.

Here, having reached the crest of a hill on this road, we are about to descend into the mist. The tree on the left is one of my favourites and anyone who is interested can see this very same tree here, photographed from the same viewpoint in better weather in March, 2016.

In the workshop you can see another photograph, taken from the same viewpoint but looking to the right (south).

ISO 160, 1/1000sec at f/8, focal length 33mm.

Hello John

I like the power of the tree standing as a sentinel on this country road. I would like to see it as a black and white image.

Jimmy

Hello John,
An image truly evocative of a glorious winter's day. The hoar frosted branches of the tree stand out beautifully against the pastel blue sky. Perfect exposure with delightful lights and natural colours. Impeccable clarity. The black top road disappearing into the mist makes one wonder what lies beyond.

Hello John,

I would think at thaw fog, but this a very great moment for take this pictures.
Pleasant panorama too.
Composition and presentation are superb.
Very well done, TFS.

Have a nice weekend,
John.

Hello John,
This is a photo slightly in the style of Nicolas (Nicou), who is a master at combining heavy mist with a bright light in a beautiful scenery. The main difference is that he has a lot of high mountains around him. But this tree is just as good an eye-catcher as an Alp, and it is perfectly placed. I love the contrast between the clear sky and the fog covering the valley. The dark part of the road is another striking feature in this bright scenery.
Kind regards,
Gert

John,
You write that you have taken the workshop photo in better weather, but I do not agree with you. Warmer weather, but not better as far as I am concerned.
This is the most beautiful weather I know. Clear freezing weather with plenty of sunshine.
Not too cold of course, but better than a hot summer day and also much more photogenic.
Excellent work
Have a good weekend, groet Rob

Waaw John,it seems to be in the gallery of Nicou with these fantastic pics! I seen on TV the cold and snowy days in your country in January, and you caught in a great way this opportunity. The first pic is all inclusive..ehehe..sun,snow and fog together for a great composition, beautiful WS too. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hello John,
Wow, what a sky! Not blue but turquoise, very appealing! And my congratulations for your wednesday walks, everybody else would find excuses to stay at home in hail and storm, no matter how healthy a walk would be. You are rewarded with fine pictures and fitness, don't know which is more important....
Kind regards,
Elvira

Hi John

Still alive! Your image is a kind of all the seasons in one picture! The warm sun evaporates the mist and melt the snow except in the shades, it must be difficult to drive on such a road, by thankfully the frost is over on the right (opposite of wrong!) side of the road for the UK drivers!!!
Good for you tp walk every wednesday, whatever is the weather, it's the same for me but on monday and the last week, it was rainy all the time during our 3 hours walk (11 people attending). We appreciate coming back home a warm shower and a hot tea!
Cheers
CLODO

Hello John,
What a gorgeous photo in fascinating weather conditions! The bright sunlight goes really well together with the snow in the fields and the frosty branches of the large tree, but the mist is the most beautiful and creates a magical mood, especially with the hill tops which rise up from the mist in the distance.
Lars

Ciao caro John, fascinating misty view with fantastic frozen tree, wonderful colors, excellent perspective and splendid light, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hello John, I like to see the same view taken at different times of the year, and this is a winner.
That mist looks so cold!
The tree still covered in frost too.
I hope that there was a nice hot drink at the end of the walk?
Thanks for sharing, including the extra shots.
Regards Jean.

Ciao John

Bon W-E

Hello John,
This is my favourite of the three photos that you show. How lucky you were to have that mist and the sharp frost. The fence, wall and snowy road all lead into that mysterious fog. Gorgeous colours and sharpness. This is a photo that I would love have to taken myself.
Superb!
Kind Regards, Ann

Excellent quality picture. I can see myself walking down that road breathing in the crystal air. Lovely.

Hello John,

Wow! What a wonderful sunny winter scenery. Amazing photojob perfectly composed and with an excellent light management. I like this first class wintershot very much. You are sharing here really a picture full of atmosphere. Very well done.Tfs.

Hi John
ohhh...ahhhh....sweet! gotta love those Cyan blues!
10km walk with ancient friends eh? Nothing can beat that.
good for you all to just get out there and do it, rain or shine. the tips of the branches are incredible, so crisp and frozen. great shot with the long perspectives, the fence, the black road, the cyan blues, wonderful shot John. Hope you wear longjohns...or at least that what we call them here in Canada. cheers
Craig

Hello John,

It is such an interesting experience to look at the photographs of this spot, taken at differing times of year. The contrast is truly amazing!

You really had the perfect day for walking and for photography. The upper regions bathed in strong sunlight, whilst the lower regions are submerged in thick mist1 (It reminds me of photograph that Nicolas takes of the Alps!)
The tree is the strong feature, looking festive in its silvery coat, and very well positioned in the frame whilst also, linking together the upper and lower areas.
The sun is slowly having an effect, it has melted the frost on the l/h side of the road!

You will be as fit as a fiddle after all these long walks! 😃😃

Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hi John,
wow, this is truly impressive.
The decoration with snow makes such a spectacular effect!
The light was magnificent too.
Motif like the lone tree, road, fence -are all perfect for this type of photography.
And the fog of course adds a mystical touch.
Sadly for my daughter we had only one snowy day so far in the North East -we made a snowman but no chance for photos like this :(
Beautiful winter scenery!
M

Perfect combination of conditions you mention in the title! Also, my favourite kind of weather. The road, the fence and the dry stone wall make for perfect foreground and the tree is a wonderful focus point. I love the various shades of blue you included in the image.
Lovely photo in WS too. I'm quite jealous about your Wednesday walks now. :-)
Have a nice Sunday
