Moving in time and geography I remain in India but have moved to 1977.

This is from a small town called Tangmarg in Jammy & Kashmir state, fairly close to the so called Line of Control, the unofficial border between India and Pakistan. There is no internationally recognized border between Indian and Pakistani controlled parts of Kashmir.

I spent a week in Kashmir and made two organized tours through the large valley surrounding the state "summer capital" Srinagar. Today's photo is from a tour to the hills in the west of the state. It only shows an ordinary market stall. I can't even see what was sold here, but the stall to the left indicates that Kashmir is a major producer of apples.

This is only the second photo on TE from Tangmarg. Not surprisingly the first one was also mine. I have no idea exactly where in Tangmarg I took this photo, but the map coordinates 34.05823 74.42268 will give you a rough idea. If you drag the little yellow man to this spot you may get a surprise. My photo is from October 1977. The Google photo was taken this month. What a difference. Surprisingly I was today allowed to enter the figures the proper way, so you can just click Map: view.

As usual this is a scan of a Kodachrome slide. Here is a larger version.

The WS shows a photo I rediscovered the other day in one of my many files. It's not a good photo and an even worse scan, made years ago, but never mind. It's from the same visit to Kashmir.

Hej Gert,

Hej Gert,

A good daily life scene from this vibrant street market. Excellent sharpness and the pp work has brought out some good shadow detail. Punchy light contrasts and the red and green apples at right add interest. Tfs!

Hello Gert,
An interesting market scene well realised. I like the light and shadow contrasts and the well rendered colours. I am always amazed by what people manage to carry on their heads in Asia, mainly ladies it has to be said. This lady seem to have a great variety of objects rather precariously balanced though for some reason she seems to be hooked to the nearby post.

Hello Gert,

Well, you warned us about a shock but I had no idea that the changes would have been so massive! Who could believe that the modern Google shot would have been taken in this same place!!!
I must admit, though I'm sure the residents nowadays are warmer and more cosily housed, this is the photograph that captures our attention and stirs our imagination. The clothing, the market, the head-carrying habit are all so evocative of the country and give a sense of place.
It was after some close scrutiny that I noticed the child sitting (maybe sadly) between the adults. I'm sure you won't remember anything about her! I also noticed the rough, uneven character of the floor. Feet are standing askew. It looks easy to sprain an ankle.

When you compare the photographs of then and now, you realise just how important these documentary shots are, in an ever changing world!

Thank you for these and have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert,
Again two beautiful gems of India from 40 years ago. The attitudes of the people are remarkable, but their clothing also makes the photo extraordinarily interesting.
It seems like a peaceful scene in this still rowdy environment.
Again compliments for the excellent scan quality.
Have a nice day. Groet Rob

Hello Gert,

The old pictures speak real book parts
We see a part of the culture of 40 year ago in India.
Also, nice people and clothings are pleasant to look at.
Excellent composition and perfect presentation.
Very well done,

Best regards,

Hi Gert,

You have captured well the inter action between the people. The point of view is showing the details of their clothings. The light is enhancing the beauty of the colors. Have a nice day.

Bonjour Mesut,

Je crois qu'on pourrait voir cette photo encore de nos jours.Rien ne semble avoir évolué dans cette partie du monde. Ta photo a très bien vieillie et la lumière était superbe ce jour là.

A very good archive photo, when I look at this picture, I could not say whether it was done last year or 40 years ago, there are definitely places where time stands still

a nice slice of the daily life in this area, I liked the many human aspects we can see in this image. I remember I only saw bananas and apples being sold in the streets of india, rarely other fruits were being sold.

take care

Hi Gert
This is authentic everyday life. They are not posing for the camera and that's great.
Excellent light, details and colors.

Hello Gert,

This must be one of the most interesting posts I have seen on TE for some time! Not only do we see two excellent photographs and read a fascinating and informative note but, yes, you did not exaggerate when you suggested that we might get a surprise by following Mr. Google's little yellow companion to this place as it is today. Yes, gone are the old rickety market stalls, the rough earthen roadway and well-worn traditional clothing - now we see modern hotels and shops, smooth metalled roadways, vehicles more modern and in better condition than mine and people dressed in modern outdoor winter clothing such as a Westerner might wear on a trip to Iceland or on a skiing holiday in Austria.

Your main photograph is no doubt the better of the two, not only technically but also in the amount of detail and information it conveys, yet your workshop image (only one today?) is quite delightful too, showing a lady sitting outside her door, presumably sewing or engrossed in some similar fiddly task.

Thank you for sharing these delightful memories.

Kind Regards,

P.S. Just out of curiosity, how can you tell that Mr. Google's image of this street scene was taken just this month?

Hello dear Gert and thanks again
what could I say fo this impressive
captue??/only greetings for the photo
which seems like a scenery from the
movie and according to you useful
notes this from a small town called
i can imagine your experience after spending
a week in Kashmir!!
welldone and wellseen

Hello Gert,
I cannot well remember to what extent Kashmir experienced turbulent times in 1977 ... I think it was more dangerous for foreigners in the late 80s and the 90s. In 1994 I went to Ladakh via Manali and there I met a European who had gone through Srinagar and his bus had ended up in a firefight. So he decided wisely to go back to Delhi via Manali.
This photo looks a bit like your images of Afghanistan.
That woman really carries a lot on her head.
The fruit on the left looks the best quality.
Kind regards, Paul

Hello Gert, A bit younger photo but still more than 40 years old. It is always amazing for me, that already when you were a young man you liked the similar style of nothing special pictures. If you happened to be in this place now you would probably take photos like this one. Interesting scene from the market. The men wear traditional dresses.
This is the part of India that I do not know. There are still countries that I haven't visited so probably I will not go to India anymore.

Kind regards Malgo

Hej Gert,
Fantastic daily life view from a place so remote both in time and place. Beautiful colours and contrasts. That man has quite a load above his head!

Amazing record of old times in Kashmir. The WS photo is amazing too, you should have made it another main upload (do I sound like a broken record??). A wonderful street shot with lots of fascinating details including people's clothes and the vegetables on the stalls.
It indeed looks very different than on Google Street View.
You know, I was once very close to this place, on the other side of the border. Everything looked like in this photo, not the Google shot...

Hello Gert, I cannot believe the difference, it is astounding!
This shot is a real one for the archive. Excellent scan.
The people looked so poor, and their surroundings were obviously difficult to manage.

Thanks to your travels of over 40 years ago, we can now compare the two eras.

An excellent post.
Regards Jean.

Hello Gert,
Two precious daily life photos from Kashmir from the year I graduated from high school. I am a little partial to the WS photo.

Hello Gert.
A splendid composition of a moment of real life, in the pure environment of the country, great variety of color in this group of people, which is a good set of portraits, in what looks like a fruit stall.
Magnificent composition and color.
Excellent brightness and sharpness.
Well done. I love the photo.
Have a good week.
Very best regards.

Hi Gert
wow, yes, quite the difference in the view we see today! Its as if it's not even the same place. I prefer the old look haha. Looking at your photo, that little girl is now a couple years older than I am now, I wonder what her life story turned out to be. She appears to be in poor condition, but she is cared for. and once again, i enjoy examining all the clothing and footwear. and look at how rough the ground is, large rocks protruding everywhere. nice one. cheers

Hi dear friend Gert
A beautiful view of the people and everyday life. Good combination of colors. Well seen.

Hello Gert,
The color and chaos in this scene are very eye-catching, but what I'm drawn to most is the child sitting on that wooden plank. He or she looks lonely amid all the activity, and the child and its clothes are in need of some washing. What happened to him/her? We can only wonder...

Hello Gert, great picture of this interesting scene of everyday life in a past time, very well captured in this interesting image, with good sharpness, light, color and quality. A great job perfectly done, my congratulations, my friend. Thanks for sharing this interesting work.

Good afternoon and happy start of the week.
All the best from the south of Spain.

Hi Gert,
Great daily life documentary.
Great view of impressive place, wonderful natural colors.Excellent compo of scene!
Best regards

Gert, I've checked on google maps, Tangmarg is located on the road going to Gulmarg, the popular skiing destination in Kashmir. I've visited Srinagar in 2008 but not the towns around. The place you show is close to the unofficial border between India and Pakistan. On the picture we can see the people daily life in a market. The lady is carrying kitchen items on her head. I like the traditional clothes and the scarfs they wear. Good scan quality.
