[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
During my recent short visit to Sicily I made a day trip to Cefalù, a small but attractive city (and of course packed with tourists) on the coast, slightly less than an hour's journey by train east of Palermo. I was mainly anxious to see the 12th century cathedral, which I first learned about while studying art history at university 50 years ago.

Cefalù cathedral is famous for its apse mosaic of Christ Pantocrator (almighty ≈ ruler of all). I was delighted to finally see it with my own eyes after so many years, but I didn't bother to take any photos of it. Since I don't carry a tripod I usually refrain from taking photos inside dark buildings, and using a flash seems meaningless. I also see little point in taking my own photos of features better seen in books or elsewhere on the internet. So I suggest you take a look at this link if you want to see the Cefalù Pantocrator.

I was more eager to take photos like this one, showing most of the cathedral's façade behind a square as usual filled with cafés. To me this is mainly a photo of a brightly dressed happy little boy with the cathedral in the background. I saw him having fun chasing away pigeons, but by the time I had manoeuvred myself into a good position among the other tourists, all taking photos of the cathedral, the pigeons were already at a safe distance. However, the boy still looked happy, which was good enough for me. (I intend to show you later how a street photo can go completely wrong.)

This church is one of nine structures of a UNESCO World Heritage site collectively referred to as Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale.

Here is a larger version.

If it annoys you that one tower is partly obscured, you can see it better here. Another additional photo shows a large column.

If you click Map: view you can see approximately where I was standing when taking the main photo.

Tag Gert my TE neighbor today!

We can extrapolate from the tower at left what the almost identical tower at right might look like, so for me that's not a problem at all. The boy looking up and smiling caught my eye. I wonder what he spotted? This looks similar to Taormina, also in Sicily. Good sharpness and nice repetition of the folded umbrellas in the al fresco dining area. Tfs!

Nice scene from the iconic square in front of the cathedral. I'm curious about the child's attention: it was a bird or a baloon?

Bonjour, cher Gert,
Quand je vois toutes ces photos des différents pays, je suis émerveillé de voir qu'il existe beaucoup de choses à découvrir (des merveilles de toute sorte).
Une présentation très bien faite.

yes, the boy and his joy is a strong focal point contrasting with the beauty of the cathedral in the opposite angle. very special compo, full of beauty and life.I saw the link, the mosaic is amazing and I want to see it someday.the shapes of the cathedral remind me some of lisbon and porto cathedrals, simple, beautiful and strong.

take care

Hi Gert
I must admit that I wasn't very impressed with Cefalu (very commercial and crowded) although there were a few good photo opportunities. You've found one of them - a good mix of people and the cathedral.

Bonjour Gert
Plutôt sympathique cette place très animée.
Merci pour le partage et bonne journée.

Hello Gert,

I had to check the location of your photograph for it did not seem Italian. But, it is good to learn about places, their character and atmosphere.

You are right, it is the little boy who captures this photograph with his charming, innocent smile. But what a setting he commands! The fact that no-one seems to be paying him any attention really adds to his dominance!
After you have manoeuvred yourself, you may have lost the pigeons but you had secured a fine compositional position. The tree is a well placed feature and there is a good diagonal line from the focal child to the guiding steps.

The w/s are a good addition.
Is the person, behind the inquisitive lady, a friend or did you capture someone stealing from her bag!

Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Chefalu I named as the "Sleeping-beauty", Gert, and this particulr piazza had not changed a bit since we were there on 09/2003.
The Cathedral has a magnificent interior. Also, from this POV - to the far left side of the piazza there was best Gelato shop, can't forget the special tastes they offered.
The picture is a wonderful capture of daily life, and the adorable little kid added so much charm to the whole.

Hello Gert, this is a lovely reminder for me, I remember this cathedral very well.
A lovely shot, showing daily life in Cefalu.
The boy is charming, perfectly placed in the frame.
The notes and additional pictures make a neat 'package'!
Thanks for sharing, regards Jean.

Hi Gert, nice excursion to Cefalu, with 3 beautiful pics showing the majestic cathedral, one of the most example of this kind of architechture that we can see in southern Italy. I like a lot the main pic with the cathedral over this carpet made by the tables and customers of this bar, very nice the close up in the WS showing the column details and the lady without a foot...but no problem,i read in your note this small mistake. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Ciao Gert, great view of fantastic cathedral, lovely composition with cute boy in FG and a lot of people, excellent clarity, splendid light and wonderful colors very well done, my friend have a good weekend ciao Silvio

Bonjour Gert,

Tu as saisi un très beau moment. Ce jeune garcon semble bien s'amuser seul dans son monde et seul à voir la chose qui le fait sourire. Il faudrait bien qu'il regarde derrière lui car c'est aussi très beau.

Hello Gert, Delightful picture. I like such composition the most. Not only people but also the view of the reason of going in the place, here the Duomo of Cefalu. And the kid is so adorable. I wonder what he saw up there?
Red cloths here and there, nice big flowerpots.
I remember Cefalu very well after all these years. I was going by train to Palermo. I wanted to see Cefalu but it seemed to me, that the train had no stop. I was sitting in the compartment chatting with other passengers. Suddenly the train stopped and I saw the sign: Cefalu. I grabbed my backpack and rushed to go out. The passenger looked at me with surprise. The Christ Pantokrator in the apse is terrific.

I go.

Have a nice weekend

Hello Gert ,
When I was in Cefalu at Easter , the streets were so crowdy that i've not really appreciated the beauty of the town and the cathedral . It was after a full day of walking in the mountains 10 kilometers in the inland , without seeing any people ! I suppose that Sicilian don't really like mountain walks ... they prefer the "farniente" on the terraces .
her ,
The little boy in yellow adds a lot of interest to the classical scene .

Hello Gert,
The lady in the WS looks as if she realizes that you have cut off her feet.
I like your main picture of the church very much. Including the palmtree, the facade of an old building, the many parasols, the cozy terrace and the happy boy who looks as if a gift will fall from the sky, it gives a beautiful overall picture of that spot.
A photo with a lot of interesting elements.
I've never been to Cefalu but it surely looks interesting.
Best regards, Paul

Hej Gert,

Buon we

Hello dear Gert and have a nice time
and a happy new day and weekend
a beautiful photo pleasant to our eyes
the best detail here is the small child
looking at the sky!!!
right timing for this capture
taken in an artistic way
and as you described you saw him
having fun chasing away pigeons

Hi Gert,

You have captured well the smiling expression of the child and the activities at the cafe. The point of view is showing the details of the cathedral. A good management of the backlight which does not hurt the output of the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi Gert

Absolutly in accordance with your words, some post cards didn't need to be taken again, the life in the city is more interesting, while the adults have a break and drink, this young boy was playing with the pigeons and was happy to see settled in the palm tree.

Bravo et amitié

Dear Gert,

Its all nice what you have written about the city, but the kids face says it all...

Have a nice Weekend!
Best Wishes,

Hello Gert,
Three wonderful photos and a good story. A good start for a promising Sunday morning.
The boy's face is worth gold. And then he also had such a nice bright yellow jacket.
But the photo of the lady without feet is also beautiful. She looks at you with a look of: "He does not do that well, so my feet do not get there".
excellent presentation
Have a good Sunday, groet Rob

Hello Gert,
Another topclass capture and TE entry in your gallery.
Taken with very good pov and timing.
Specially the cute boy looking upwards is amazing !
TFS and have a nice weekend

Hei Gert

Hilsen Erling

Hej Gert,
Expression of that boy is fantastic. And very nice street cafe view too. That medieval cathedral seems has special architecture. I Think I see some Arabic influence in style.

Hello Gert.
An original and vital composition, with this very busy terrace in the foreground, where the attention is captured by the sympathetic child of the foreground, as a close of perspective nothing better than the facade of the splendid cathedral of Cefalù.
A magnificent color that gives a lot of chromatic richness to the image.
Very good lighting management and very good sharpness.
Well done. I like it.
Have a good start to the week.
Very best regards.

Hello Gert, great picture of this interesting composition with daily life scene, very well captured in this beautiful image, with good sharpness, light, color and quality. Great and interesting work perfectly done, my congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.

Good night and happy week.
Best wishes from the south of Spain.

Hello Gert,
I agree with you, even in the absence of the pigeons, the look on the boy's face alone has made the photo. 👍👍

Hello Gert,

I love to see (and also try to take) photographs from inside churches and cathedrals but good photographs in such places are very difficult to achieve without a substantial tripod unless the light is particularly favourable, which usually it is not. And those who think they can get away by using a feeble flash have clearly not understood the Inverse Square Law.

So your decision to take a series of outside shots and supply us with a link to a ready-made picture of Christ Pantocrator was a wise one. And I believe you also made the right choice for your main photograph, the happy little boy in his bright yellow jacket stealing our attention as he gazes skyward in search of more pigeons while boring grown-ups sit chatting and drinking their coffee.

All three pictures are excellent but your main one is the best for we not only connect with the little boy but also have an excellent view of the cathedral and of the visitors sitting amidst an array of folded umbrellas standing, perhaps slightly spookily, almost like sentries. The day might have been a little dull but that has provided some lovely soft light and fine vibrant colours too.

Kind Regards,

Hallo Gert Don't worry about the palm tree; it gives much soul to your already lively capture enriched of the cheerful satisfaction expressed by the mischievous little fellow enjoying his victory over the pigeons flock! Judicious inclusion of the building frontage at right for an intense impression of depth. And most outstanding, fortuitously or not, are these two eye catchers located right on the same vertical tiers line at right for a pleasing overall setup. Hjartliga halsningar.
