Diogenes (412 BC - 323 BC) was a Greek philosopher born in the then Ionian colony of Sinope on the Black Sea coast of what is now Turkey. He died in Corinth, Greece. He is famous for being one of the founders of Cynicism. Diogenes was an eccentric & controversial character, and rebelled against social mores of the time. Here he is depicted searching for an honest man in broad daylight with a lamp. The statue was erected in 2006. More information here:

Some of his notable quotes include:

"The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.

We have two ears and one tongue so that we would listen more and talk less.

Dogs and philosophers do the greatest good and get the fewest rewards.

Blushing is the color of virtue.

What I like to drink most is wine that belongs to others.

As a matter of self-preservation, a man needs good friends or ardent enemies, for the former instruct him and the latter take him to task.

Man is the most intelligent of the animals - and the most silly.

Why not whip the teacher when the pupil misbehaves?

No man is hurt but by himself.

I have nothing to ask but that you would remove to the other side, that you may not, by intercepting the sunshine, take from me what you cannot give."

Hello Chris,
I almost suspected this statue wasn't from the antique times. I spent a day and a half in Sinop in 2012 but I can't remember seeing it. It's not a bad work and it fills the photo frame well. Exposure could not have been better.
Best wishes,
Gert

Bonjour Chris,

Philippe

Hi Chris,i like a lot the blue of sky in the pic where there is something of white in the sun and a perfect exposure like your. A very imposing capture of the Diogenes statue,it's easy to understand that is brand new, very clean and made in a nice style too. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hello Chris,

Oh, this has worried me!
I think I must be a follower of Diogenes for I find myself feeling cynical more often than I would like!!

It's a beautiful statue, crisply representing the philosopher.
You have captured this crispness very well and I love how you have placed the statue against the clear sky. He does look a bit like an actor on a stage.

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Chris,

What a lovely contrast picture with the nice white statue and dark blue background.
Colours and sharpness are fantastic.
Composition and presentation are superb.
Very well done, TFS.

Best regards,
John.

Hello Chris, an excellent picture of a fine sculpture; and thanks for teaching me about the fact that he was a founder of cynicism!
Lovely background of the blue, blue sky, and no over exposure of the white stone.
I enjoyed reading some of his quotations.
Regards Jean.

Hi Chris,
A photo well managed, good angle to present this statue, very good contrast effect between the white and this deep blue in the BG, tfs.

Hello Chris,

Amusing moment of Diogenes looking for an honest man. I doubt if he will find one, especially among politicians. This white statue looks great against the blue sky. Good quotes, like from the philosopher.
Dogs and philosophers do the greatest good and get the fewest rewards.

Have a nice weekend

Hi Chris,
I wonder if Diogenes would have a Facebook account if he lived today?

Lovely presentation here, white statue goes so well with the deep blue polarized sky.
I was at first surprised that a statue of Greek philosopher was erected in Turkey but I see it was in the pre-Erdogan times.
I would really like to travel through the Black Sea coast of Turkey.
Great reportage,
M

chris

I didn't know this famous personage was born in sinop. nice sculpture remembering the fact. nice contrast with the blue sky.

take care

jorge

Hello Chris,
This is a very fine sculpture of Diogenes. I wonder how it will stand the test of time; I see in eight years he has already developed some cracks and rust stains. On top of that, I do not know how a people getting more fundamentalist Muslim will treat a statue in time... 👍

MT
