Clonmacnoise Monastery

This is the ancient monastery of Clonmacnoise (Irish: Cluain Mhic Nóisin, meaning: Meadow of the Sons of Nós) in County Offaly in central Ireland. Located on the banks of the River Shannon, Clonmacnoise was founded in 544 by St Ciarán. Thanks to its strategic location, it quickly became a major centre of learning and religion and the most famous monastery in Ireland, visited by many scholars from all over Europe. Many kings of Tara and Connacht were buried at Clonmacnoise. In 1552 Clonmacnoise was destroyed and looted by the English and left in ruins. Seen here is the Cathedral from 909 at left and the Temple Doolin at right.

Hello Lars, beautiful view of this old cemetery. Wonderful and interesting place. What a pity that Noel not only left TE but also took all his pictures from here. He had many similar places in his gallery.
The yellow dandelions are a nice spring addition.

Kind regards MAlgo

Very good photo..

We can say this place is the cemetery of kings and queens..

I would like to see this place..

In history many places have been looted and ruined by empires and emperors..:)

So we can read the history from ruins..:)

Witaj Lars!
Fantastic place, I love it.
Amazing walls and crosses.
Good composition, frame and colors.
Very well done.
Warm regards.

Hi Lars
Impressive low shooting angle of a very imposing image of the very intimate glimpses into real lives in the distant past!

The dramatic Celtic crosses stand out brilliantly against the blue sky, linking viewers to calm and peaceful setting. The cloud & green lawn give that little extra punch, but this shot has a 'feel' as if you are photographing between this world and the next..

So much more than just pictures,,,
Congrats
Best regards

Ha! Ha! Lars, you have recognised what great features these higgledy-piggledy gravestones are for giving immediate interest, they also set the scene!
I just love how you have made the cross appear taller than then the ruin, it just seems to have symbolic significance.
The photograph is crisp and clear and, amazingly, you had a beautiful, blue sky!

Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hi Lars, great capture of what remains of this monastery and its cemetery,a typical irish view another time with the unmistakable architechtural style and the grey stones, lovely perspective and the usual top quality. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Bonjour, cher ami Lars,
la présence de ces ruines offrent un aspect désolant où l'histoire a fait son oeuvre.
Les croix dressées sont une sorte de manifestation de ce qui s'est passé.
Amitiés.
Philippe

Hello Lars,
It is fascinating to know that this relatively distant place was one of the great European centres of learning. The ruins give us an idea of the former glory of this monastery and you show them nicely in this well composed photo. The large crosses provide a fine foreground and the sharpness is as usual excellent.
Kind regards,
Gert

Excelente tomada esta. Lindas cores, profundidade e nitidez. Belo trabalho,

Hi Lars,

The cemetery is framing well the ruins. The point of view is showing the details of the ruins Clonmacnoise monastery and of the tombstones. The light is bringing out the beauty of the colors. Have a nice day.

Dag Lars
Groet Rob

Hello,
Beautiful colors and high quality of your capture from that old cemetery. A perfect composition, well seen.

Hello lars ,
So Typically Irish!
Splendid view of the ruins with the celtic cross in the Fg . Superb texture of old stones , between green grass and blue sky .

Bonjour Lars,

Mooi foto werk, bedankt.

Prettig weekend,
John.

Hi Lars,

Missed this one. The people at the back provide scale and animate the scene. Good sharpness & well framed and composed. The yellow fg dandelions contrast well with the blue sky and the cemetery itself is visually interesting. Tfs!

Hi, Lars.
What a shame, how many great monuments the English destroyed at that time, both in Ireland and in U.K. because of religion.
These ruins are impressive, although only walls remain, the crosses with their Celtic designs give a special charm to the place.
A fantastic photo, with beautiful natural colors, very good lighting and excellent sharpness.
Well done. I love.
Enjoy the weekend.
Very best regards.
Luis.

hI Lars,
Beautiful view of this the old crosses, and abbey ruins in background.
An excellent depth .
Sharpness and clarity are perfect.
Best regards

Hello Lars,
This is a terrific view of the ruins of this monastery. I like your POV, the limited color palette and the textures.

Hallo Lars,

Dear Tue!
Fantastic composition. Wonderful light and bright, amazing colours. Good POV and DOF. Fantastic effect.
Well done!

Hello, Lars!

Excellent low POV with the crosses in the foreground really standing out against this beautiful deep blue sky! The details of the monastery were captured with perfect light and sharpness! The colors are wonderful! Very good job!

Hi Lars,
wonderful picture!
The previous one was with round tower so this one must be with Celtic crosses.
Lovely asymmetric composition.
The highlight is here the amazing weather! The colors of green and blue are so well saturated and so natural!! You have also a pleasant sky with subtle clouds decorating the scene. One cannot wish for more.
Beautiful work!!!#

Most times, Lars, I do not like to write critiques about cemeteries - said this already (…?). But the story here is the ruins of the monastery, roof-less and built old-style from local stones in grey.
The yellow dandelions on green natural grass added attractive colors.
Good afternoon,
Ike
