I take a big jump from Sweden to Vietnam and go back a few years but remain in the digital era.

This is a town called My Tho, a couple of hours' journey from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) in southern Vietnam. It's the first town you reach in the Mekong delta when travelling southwest. Many tourists make day trips here, but there is a fairly limited range of sights offered and quite a lot of people crowding at the same places. There is much more to see further down the delta.

This photo is of course nothing special, but it gives you a glimpse of life on the mighty river. I took it from the landing at the top of the staircase outside my hotel room.

Here is a larger version.

Two more colourful photos from My Tho can be seen as workshops, one showing a lady selling fruits, the other ladies selling flowers.

If you want to see where I took the main photo the map coordinates are 10.352886 106.367904.

Hello Gert
Vietnam becomes more and more popular for the Western tourist. I have several acquaintances who has or will visit this land that was everyday news in our years of adolescence. It is good to see that colourful fruits and flowers has returned to this country and I hope we can say the same in a number of years about so many other countries nowadays still living in mystery.
Have a good Sunday. Groet Rob

Hi Gert

Fortunately for me I was born 1 year too early to receive the free gift of national service in Vietnam as the war ended in 1975 when I was 19. The water village scene here evokes memories of Venice or Suzhou. This area is prone to typhoons and some of those dwellings are only a few centimetres above the water. Tfs!

Bonjour, cher Gert,
L'on sent bien le journaliste à travers vos images, il y a toujours quelque chose à apprendre, à comprendre.
Encore une image qui nous parle.
Merci pour la note.

Dobar dan.
Interesantan pogled, dobar tekst ...
Dobar rad, lepo pokazan deo grada i reka, dobar kontrast i perspektiva, lepe boje, lepo uhvacen trenutak sa teretnim brodovima.
Interesantan deo grada na obali reke i teretno brodovi.
Lepo popodne i sve najbolje.

Good day.
Interesting look, good text ...
Good work, beautifully portrayed part of the city and the river, good contrast and perspective, nice colors, well-caught moment with cargo ships.
An interesting part of the city on the banks of the river and cargo ships.
Good afternoon and all the best.

Hi Gert
I'm fully aware that Thailand is a different country, but its similar looking, and Thailand was my very very very first venture out of North America - i recall seeing scenes exactly like this one and I was pretty much shocked! I was young and travel naive, so needless to say it was an eye opener for me.

Its hard to imagine living in such conditions on the water like that. I recall seeing people peeing and pooing in the water from their front door/balcony...my goodness.

having said all that, with all those memories popping up, your hotel room couldn't be much closer to all the action.
you basically have a front row seat. good lighting, no monsoon rains, worked out well on this day.

Bonjour Gert,

J'ai eu le plaisir de voguer sur ces eaux.Entre la Thailande et le Laos. Ce n'est certes pas la richesse sur les deux rives mais une vie dure. Beau point de vue sur la vie.

Hello Gert, life on the Mekong Delta, there is so much to view in this 'nothing special' shot.
Excellent composition.
I enjoyed the extra shots in w/shop too.
I don't recall many shots from this part of the world, but I might be mistaken.
Regards Jean.

Hello Gert,

Almost ten year old but maybe are today rge same boats active.
A wonderful picture with lovely details..
You create depth and perspective.
Pleasant composition with really nice colours.
Very well done, TFS.

Have a nice day,

Good afternoon Gert, and thanks for your accurate "diagnosis" about the mural picture.
As for this photo: A fine daily-life near the river well detected, motion of the two boats and clear view of the wooden houses built upon water. All is wonderfully rendered.
Have a nice new week,

Hi Gert
This is what I call a hotel with a view. Raised viewpoints always have something interesting to offer.
I'm sure someone who visited this place more than once would be able to tell when the image was taken, but for me it looks timeless with the dilapidated buildings and old barges. I was surprised when I looked at the date and realised it was taken only 9 years ago.
Like Craig, it reminds me of Thailand (the one day I spent in Bangkok was all about boats).
Love the colourful WS shots. A week ago, in Rantepao, I also found a lot of fruit I had not seen before...
Best wishes

for me it is a curious image. looks like the houses were took by the waters and are now floating in this area, downing the river. nice details of the boats in movement and the whole area. TFS.

Hi Gert
Tout est ancien les habitations et même les bateaux, cela a t'il changer depuis autant d'années !! je pense que c'est le style du pays, assez pauvre, belles images colorées en WS, intéressante présentations
belle soirée

Hello Gert,

A fine series to inform us of the details of the river and the city.
The near side looks much more modern than the the clustered, makeshift houses on the far side. I can only remember this area on the news during the Vietnam War!
I love the colourful photographs of the flowers and fruit sellers! It is interesting to see that the ladies still wear the traditional head gear.
There is already fear from pollution as I can see someone wearing a face mask!

What an interesting area!

Warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert,
It does give an excellent impression of the town and life around the river indeed. The two ships are well included in the centre. There are so many small houses in such a small area on the other side!

Hej Gert,
There's so much East Asian character in this view. Tightly built simple buildings with rusty roofs. Those boats have quite interesting design too. And you had good timing as the boats pass. High viewpoint is excellent.

Hello Gert, very good photo of this interesting scene of daily life in the famous delta, very well captured in this interesting image, with good clarity, light, color and quality. A great work perfectly done, my congratulations, my friend. Thank you for sharing this interesting work.

Good night and happy start to the week.
All the best from the south of Spain.

Ciao Gert

Hello Gert,
Interesting photo from your archive.
Perfect captured, great perspective, excellent clarity and superb colors.
Interesting capture of fruit in WS.
Fine presentation.

Hi Gert,

The wideness of the area is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the boats and of the houses. The light has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.

Good morning,
Simple scene along the river. I like the dynamic and the spectacular composition with typical houses along the shores. Well seen.

Hello Gert,

good image of this place, it catches my attention how the houses are close to the water, the scene with the boats is also interesting, well done,

Best regards,

Ciao Gert, great view of fantastic river, lovely composition with nice boats, excellent clarity, splendid light and wonderful natural colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hello Gert,
nice the view of this section of the Mekong river with the passing by boats in the floating village to are superb.I like the beautiful presentation with the clarity to be superb.

Hello Gert,
You had a nice elevated position to capture this wide view of the river. These simple houses look very basic, and I can only wonder what they are like inside. Waterfront property in other parts of the world would connote luxury and wealth, but here it simply means life. I like the boats, too.

Dear Gert,

So you are sailing towards more exotic waters? I'm buying it.
My first thought was that it must be a Kodachrome slide, considering the colours, than I saw that it was taken in 2008, so much likely its a digital picture. Anyhow, I like it for many reasons, eg. the interesting architectural solutions.

Best Wishes,

Hello dear Gert and have a nice time
amd a happy new day
I prefer the big jumps from today
to go back a few years
it s hard to imagine livng in
such conditions
one shot is one thousand words

Hello Gert, Big jump in space, not so much in time , it is already TE-time. You had a hotel in a good place, with this view of the mighty river. I saw Mekong in Thailand and Laos where it was still not so big and with rocks. Here it is really huge. There is so much activity here. Interesting barges. Nice also two Workshop picture. In the hfruit stand I see some fruits that I do not know - there orange ones and pink. The picture with marigolds in different colours is also nice. In India, such marigolds are sold near the temples.

Have a nice day. July is very rainy in Polnad. Not so important for me when I stay at home..

Hello Gert

Been there, and I can vouch for the fact that it's nothing special! But as you say, it's a gateway to plenty of more interesting places. You've succeeded in showing us the workaday world of the Mekong, warts and all!

Hi, Gert.
Impressive image of the delta of the river, with those houses so precarious, that seem submerged in the same, it is not strange that when heavy rains destroy many of them, the sailing boats are a good complement.
Great color, which gives a lot of appeal to the image.
Very good brightness and perfect sharpness.
Well done. I like very much.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.

Hello, Gert,
The photos with the fruit and flower sellers are more picturesque, but this image is more informative and I can imagine a life in the Vietnamese part of Mekong. I hope to visit this country someday.
Best wishes,

Hello Gert I just had a look 'in town' on your larger poster and was astonished by so much poverty probably leading to crime and altercates, given the lack of privacy. On the other hand, people of this village don't need to be connected on Twitter for the rapid transmission of local news! You show a piece of plain truth that travel agencies prefer keeping muted! How can destitution be so riveting?!
