Good Morning Everyone,

Please click on this link to see the Beta version, which is larger and clearer. You will even be able to see the figures climbing on the rocks.

This is Fort National, a fort on a tidal island a few hundred metres off the walled city of Saint-Malo. We visited it when we spent a few days a hotel in the old city.

It was built by the great military architect Vauban in 1689, to protect Saint-Malo's port. The fort was originally called Fort Royal. In 1789 the fort's name became Fort d'Îlette or Républicain, then Fort Impérial and, after 1870, Fort National.

It is possible to visit the fort when the fort is flying the French flag. Access is only possible at low tide during the period from 1 June to 30 September and on certain other days.

I knew there were some very interesting places to see in St. Malo and was not disappointed.

Thank you for your visit, Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
Like many old forts this looks like an exciting place to visit, and maybe the fact that it is only accessible parts of the day makes it even more inspiring. It's not very large but it looks impressive, partly perhaps thanks to the dark rocks surrounding it and separating it from the sea and the sandy beach. I like the few but mild colours and the inclusion of a few persons exploring the rocks.
Kind regards,

Witaj Bev neighbor today!
Very curious fort, building makes impression.
Excellent frame and colors.
I like it.
Well done.
Warm regards.

A small fort with so many names changed in different eras, Beverly.
It is in great competiton with the famopus St.malo other island and monastery built upon - but still interesting to learn this, as said before - learing new stuff on TE, daily.
Have a nice new week,

Hello Bev,
An image perfectly composed along classical lines. Agreeable lights and natural colours. Very good rendering of the textural detail in the impressive walls.

Hello Beverley,
Ah, I've seen this fort too, although that was under much rainier and greyer circumstances. You composed the photo perfectly, I like the location of the fort on the right hand side. Very well captured with great clarity.

Hello Beverley, did you actually visit the fort?
This is an excellent view; standing on the rocky outcrop. It would have been quite difficult to escape safely from here. The lack of bright colours adds to the severity of the building.
Beta version, we can enjoy all the details.
Regards Jean.

Hello Bev,

I was twelve year ago almost on the same place but my picture where very bad and not useful.
All this type fortress be use through the German troops during WWII..
Nice perspective and depth picture.
Composition and presentation are perfect.
Very well done, TFS.

Have a nice day,

Hi Bev, very good view of this interesting island with defensive building, very well composed and captured in this good and beautiful photograph. An interesting image, with good clarity, light, color and quality. Very good and beautiful work perfectly done, my congratulations, my friend. Thank you for sharing this interesting work.

Good night and happy start to the week.
All the best from the south of Spain.

Hello Beverley,
On the thumbnail it looked a bit like a sandcastle. Not on the picture at full size.
The persons on the different spots give us a good idea of the size. It's certainly not a small fortress.
Beautifully presented with the sea at two sides. That way we get the impression the fortress might be located on a island.
From your elevated point of view we can see that it is protected by more than one defense wall.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao Bev
a metà agosto del 2015 non c'era acqua tra la spiaggia e il forte, ricordo di aver camminato fino a salire sulle pietre della fortezza.
Bellissimo luogo, l'odore del mare è amplificato molto in confronto al mare di casa mia.

the shapes of this fort are typical of vauban style. nice view of the area with the fort protected by the tides.

Hi Beverley
A bit bleak, nice fort sitting at the third and this has more going for it composition-wise, as well as a moody sky. Minimal palette as we can feel the unfavorable condition and sincerely not much of quality to show of which is understandable. Excellent snap.
Best regards

Hi Bev
man, they need to do something about this website and its quality it sucks! TE has really let its members down in a major way. If the moderators are listing and reading this message, you need to get your act together, not tomorrow, NOW.
Fix this website and its poor image quality.

This is a perfect example of that, the BETA version is fantastic, whereas this image on TE is quite poor - as have so many of my shots posted on this website. Its not your fault Beverley.

Its a shame the owners/operators of TE don't give a crap about us.

Something needs to be said, something needs to be done.
its a shame to let your photo and other photos down, its a wonderful photo with so much clarity and definition to it.

Hello Bev

Probably a famous sight, but I'm not familiar with those parts of France, so this picture fills in a blank for me:) Efficient compostion and fine soft colours.

Hello Bev,

I like the soft pastel colors and warm cold colour contrasts between the reddish brown castle and the blue turquoise sea and blue cyan sky. Good sharpness too. Tfs!
