Spring in Cumbria, near the Lake District is a gentle season when lambs are born and blossoms abound. The stone houses and drystone fences turn the countryside into a chequered green quilt. In this village is Beatrix Potter's cottage and not far in Hawkshead is Wordsworth's school. No wonder such a beautiful countryside has fired the imagination of those two creative yet different writers-one a writer for children, the other a Romantic poet whose description of nature and man's place in it has few rivals.

Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey are two neighbouring villages in the Furness area of Cumbria. Historically part of Lancashire, they are located in the Lake District between the town of Hawkshead and the lake of Windermere. The two lie on the B5285, which runs from Hawkshead to the west bank of the Windermere Ferry, a car ferry across Windermere one mile to the east of the villages.

The two are famous for their association with Beatrix Potter. She lived at Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey, first arriving at age 30 in 1896. A number of sites in the villages were used in her books such as The Tale of Tom Kitten, The Fairy Caravan, The Pie and the Patty Pan and The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck.

The villages date from at least the 14th century, when Near Sawrey was known as 'Sourer', becoming 'Narr Sawrey' by the 17th century (suggesting that Far Sawrey must have been in existence by this time). Near Sawrey contains a pub, while Far Sawrey has the parish church, a hotel, pub and village shop. The village shop ceased to function as a post office about 2003.

Hello Klaudio,

A lovely typical English frontage middle of a green area.
Also the sheep in foreground are a nice addition and bring life in the scene
An excellent composition, lovely colours and sharpness.
Very well done, TFS.

Best regards,

Bonjour Klaudio,

Une très belle photo bucolique.Les moutons sont beaux dans la prairie et la maison est magique derrière son petit mur de pierres. J'aime bien les fleurs sur la façade.

Hello Klaudio,

There is something so serene in sheep grazing on the plains of England, where the massive masonry walls and rich pastoral land is characteristic of the country. I did not know about Beatrix Potter having lived in Cumbria, but in retrospect it makes sense.

Warm regards,

Hello Klaudio,

I recognise this site and can confirm how well you have captured it.
There really is something magical about the Lake District.

The sheep, unknowingly, anchor the f/g, and give a great sense of depth to the houses, with their many-paned windows and clematis details.
You have captured the mood of Lakeland spring extremely well.

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Klaudio,
This is a very pretty and to an outsider very typical British view. It may have been a necessity to include so much foreground in order to capture such a wide view, but luckily the sheep turned this into a great advantage for the composition. Their presence, as focal-points and for the atmosphere they create, means a lot to the photo, and the same goes for the pink plant growing up the wall.
Kind regards,
"The high-priest"

Ciao Klaudio, gran bella composizione in cui è concentrato tutto il succo di questa regione,la tipica casa,il verde ovunque e le pecore come ulteriore bonus, una cattura perfetta in cui spiccano i fiori rosa tipici della primavera.Buona giornata e complimenti,Luciano

Hi dear Klaudio

So deep exposure setting makes outstandingly sharp and clear presentation as such. Color balance and allocation are so favorable to see.

All the best and have a good day! Takero
