[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today it is ten years since I joined this remarkable site called TrekEarth and during that time I have enjoyed every moment of it, learned many things about photography, learned even more about so many places in this wonderful Earth in which we live and, most importantly, made so many very good friends.

Despite the often very irritating problems of TE about which we complain these days, for me TE remains the most informative photographic site for photographers wishing to hone their skills and find out about our World and also an excellent social site for making real friendships.

As my very first photograph on TE was taken in Greenland forty-six years ago, I thought I should celebrate with another taken during that same trip.

In my life, this is the most remote part of our Earth that I have ever visited - a bay off the northern side of Nordvest Fjord, the largest fjord in the World, in East Greenland. You can see the location if you click on Map:view. In the distance lie the mountains on the south side of the fjord with a glacier easily seen running down to it, probably some eight miles distant. Then the fjord itself filled with icebergs and, finally, the rough glacial moraine and some sparse vegetation of the tundra.

Two of us had travelled to this point by means of a 16 foot (5 metre) wooden boat equipped with a puny 4 h.p. outboard engine from Syd Kap. We did attempt to travel slightly farther up the fjord from this point but the weather started to turn and the water became rougher so, as we were probably at least 200 miles from any civilisation and in 1970 had no means of communication, this was pretty much as far as we ventured. No mobile phones, no radio and the medical kit included little else than some Elastoplast, some bandages and a couple of vials of morphine.

So far, I have been able to boast to my friends on TE that I have never had a photograph removed by our moderators but, I'm sorry to say, I may not be able to do that for much longer. Because this, in fact, is a 46-year old "selfie" - this is me going for a stroll through the tundra. I can't remember for the life of me if I gave my camera to my fellow "explorer" or if I sat it on a rock using the self-timer but it was certainly taken with my camera - my old Edixa Prismat - which I still have - and which still works. The film was Kodachrome 64 colour slide film.

Incidentally, I was a medical student at the time and this was part of the Dundee University 1970 Scoresbyland Expedition.

So many thanks to all who have shown so many wonderful photographs, written so many fascinating and informative notes, made so many polite critiques of my mediocre pictures and, most of all, become my friends!

For those interested, I have posted a workshop of a Map of our Journey.

And here is a larger version of this photograph on "beta" TE.

Hello John,
Fits of all, congratulations on ten years membership; that is a long time. I think we can all forgive a venerable selfie like this taken before the word was even invented. You have placed yourself well in the frame whilst also giving us a good idea of the scale of this grandiose landscape. The colours are not as we would expect them today, but that is all part of the many changes in technology that you hint at in your fine commentary. An image well worth seeing and a great way of celebrating your ten years on TE. Thanks for sharing.

Hello John,

Congratulations for this anniversary!! And what a special gift for us: your photo from 46 years ago. Thanks!! Amazing pictures, incredible that it is so old. Fantastic view, something like in Patagonia - high mountains, the glaciers and its calving. The flowers on this area, probably wet, could be Eriophorum (cottongrass, cotton-grass or cottonsedge). Thanks also for the map.
How the world has changed during all this year. Communication with the world is such an important things. I always was nervous coming back, if all is OK at home.

What a handsome young man :).
Big hugs

Malgo

Congratulations, John, and what a fine picture to celebrate it. Great scan quality, I particularly like the clarity of the grasslands vs the threatening sky above it. And the man in between just looks very cool. A 1970 kind of cool, which somehow is just much more cool than this year's model.

Cheers

Benny

Bonjour John,

On dirait bien que c'est la semaine des anniversaires sur TE. Une photo remarquable qui révèle la vie de certains photographes en voyage. De ceux qui ne veulent rien rater. Magnifique paysage en arrière plan.

Amicalement

Serge

Hi John
wow, I want to write you a note before this photo gets taken OFF by the mods! haha...i hope not!

congrats on 10 years, and actually, congrats on writing such a fine note. I was smiling the entire time, well done.

So that's you eh? thats awesome John, you look so casual just strolling through the field, looking all cool, you could be walking down any city street for all we know. In fact you're walking through an area most of us will never get to see - thats something worthy of feeling proud about.

I have to admit, when I see your Greenland shots, I very much want to visit here. Do you know if its become a little touristy here now? of I wonder if its still got that rugged outback nature feel to it. This is such a sweet view as you're encased in mountains all around you. I like that your gaze is off to the side too.

Must have been hard to spend this time here without being able to watch Family Guy! lol

10 out of 10 John, Keep it going
cheers
Craig

Witaj John!

My congratulations 10 years in TE!!!

Beautiful landscape.
Excellent framing and colors.
Person add flavor to this composition.
Best regards.

Hello John,
Congratulations on 10 years on TE.
This is an excellent shot; well composed, lovely natural colours and great sharpness.

Your note is very interesting, as always.

Indeed, it would be a great shame if TE ceased to be there for us!! I love this site, despite the hiccups that are present sometimes.I would miss being in contact with a great group of people.

Best wishes Jean.

Hello John,
You don't looks at all like the man I have seen in some WS photos recently. Considering that I look pretty much the same as 46 years ago you really have changed considerably ;-).
End of silly jokes. Congratulations on you anniversary. I am still one year away from that. Will the site survive until then? You have posted a lot of remarkable photos in these years and this is one of them. It's so old and so well preserved and so well scanned, the scenery is so magnificent and you placed (or maybe cropped) yourself so perfectly at a third. The note is well written and interesting and an inseparable part of today's posting.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi John,
wow, this is you?
I would never recognize you from this photo! I suppose the moderators will not believe this either and may be they will keep it here. Also: nobody really reads the notes anyway :)
Fantastic photograph, the person in it adds a lovely touch especially with the backpack. It does feel very adventurous. Amazing atmosphere, it reminds me the Patagonian landscapes.
Spectacular!
I cannot believe that the photo is so old! My photos from before 2000 or just after -they are so bad! but the other thing is I usually used quite a cheap equipment and films.
This photo is older than I am :)

What a remarkable trip both in this photo and your journey over 10 years on TE. In fact recently emka was celebrating her 9th birthday and Serghei his 10th!
So it seems many people joined at the same time +- 1 year :)

Excellent photograph of highest quality and so much sentimentally charged,
M

PS
Isn't Madagascar even further? And wild as well I suppose?

hello John,
tout d'abord bravo pour ces 10 ans sur TE.
Une bonne composition pano, pour célébrer cet anniversaire.
Bon W-E
Roland

Dear John,

First of all, let me congratulate on your anniversary! Secondly, selfie or not, this is an excellent picture. Furthermore, without your note I wouldn't tell it is a 46-year old picture: clarity and colour rendering are perfect. I don't think that moderators would mind this photo, I have a more direct selfie on the site in a shop window, and Rob (alvraalto) have a lot of them.

I wish you at least ten years more here on TE.
Best Wishes,
Gy

Hi John,i'm just back from Iceland and it's a pleasure to see your WS pic showing the iceberg as what i post today. Magnificent main pic too,the example of the life of a trekker that reminds me a lot our friend Malgo, sincerly i prefere trips more comfortable, but when i was young i do me too some trip like that, with a desire to discover and not a great budget..ehehe...just my best compliments for your 10 years there and a big thanks for your pics and your useful and long comments! Luciano.

Ciao John
Carlo

Caro Giovanni

Now that would be a real shame if this iconic photo was taken down, I hope it isn't. How things come full circle! The quality of the image is superb and the model is a bit of hot stuff.

Congratulations on your 10 years on TE and thank you for your friendship, which is something I cherish. If it wasn't TE I would never have met you or Yvonne or any of the wonderful Trekkies here. Here's to many more years here with all of us together.

Hugs and love
Lisa

Hello John,

Such beauty. The landscape of snow capped mountains and glaciers is awesome.

Greenland is only green in summer?

cheers,
sam

Hello John
Great idea to celebrate 10 years TE with this 46-year-old “selfie avant la letter”.
And Greenland is not a place many TE-members has visit, but of a fascinating beauty.
I do have one picture of Greenland. The south-point by night from 10 km height flying from San Francisco to Amsterdam. It is always high on my list of places I want to visit once.
Groet Rob

Hi Sir John

Congratulations for this 10 years presence on this site, so friendly. This image is perfect, we don't detect it's a scan, the sharpness is right. You're an adventurer with your rucksack on your back in this deserted area, looking for the ice pack at the back. The weather is not brilliant but gives a nostalgic feeling.
Hats off

CLODO

Hello, John!

A little late, but congratulations for the 10 years on TE! And what a beautiful landscape with the snowy mountains in the background and this man with his bag in the foreground giving very good depth to the composition! The cloudy sky gives an interesting atmosphere to the scene! Wonderful job!

Hello, John,
My congratulations on your 10th celebrating on the TE!
Thanks for so interesting note, yep, Trekearth is part of my life during 10 years too.
Splendid shot! I see the date of the photo... It was just another world... Nobody knows what we can see tomorrow, but these 46 years changed our planet.
All the best wishes to you!
More interesting photos!
Serghei

Hello John,

I missed this whilst away on holiday ... you should have warned me, I would have delayed our departure!!!
10 years is quite an amazing length of time, so much has happened yet this is still a remarkable platform for finding out about the world, learning new skills and making good friends. I'm sure we would be lost without it!
Congratulations for your longevity, your excellent photographs and your friendship.

This is a fine shot, especially when scanned from a slide.
And, though you try to kid us that this is you, I don't believe it for a moment and neither did the moderators!
It's some young dude eager to impress with his good looks and strong physique.
The composition and the sharpness show us a remarkable scene of glaciers and rough, mountainous terrain, prefaced by what appears swampy grassland.

Thanks for sharing this, John.
Have a great day,
Bev :-)
