Happy students wearing the traditional au dai costume celebrate their graduation at the Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu-Quốc Tử Giám), Hanoi, Viet Nam.

As I mentioned in this previous posting, we were at the Temple of Literature on a Sunday, when hundreds of new graduates were there to celebrate their graduation. Most were wearing gowns and mortar boards for the obligatory photographs; many were dressed, as these two, in the traditional "au dai". Maybe they had already had their photo-shoot, and were more comfortable without the extra gown, as it was very hot and humid. I love the expression on the shorter of the two girls: a case of heroine-worship maybe...

Hello Will,
Yes, it is evident that the girl on the right looks up to the one on the left in more ways than one. Excellent candid portrait. Well framed with good light management and fine colours and clarity.

Hello Will,
Like you I'm especially fond of the smaller girl's look at her friend. They both have the kind of smiles that could tell a story. I also like the leaf she is holding, maybe using it as a fan. Furthermore I like the glimpse of other young students in the background, underscoring that you captured the girls in a crowd and that they were not posing for you. There is a lot of "daily life" in this photo, even though it was also a "decisive moment".
Best wishes,

Hi Will

A fine casual shot of two goddesses. The bright smile, the parasol, the lipstick on one side, the eager interaction and open-handed gesture on the left...they really make a great pair.

Note: the ao dai is the standard school uniform for most girl students in Vietnam, though on special occasions (like a graduation visit to the Temple of Literature) they are sure to wear an extra special one, e.g. with fancy embroidery on it (as you can see on the one the right).

Bonjour Will,

Une très belle scène de la vie quotidienne dans cette partie du monde que l'on ne voit pas souvent dans ces pages. Elles ont le sourire facile sous leur ombrelle ces belles vietnamiennes.

Dear Gert,

That's what I call a candid shot! I really like their smile and really seems that they have a perfect day. The background also offers a lot of details to be observed and one can find everything you wrote in your note.

Best Wishes,

Hello Will, a special picture of the two friends; it looks like a happy day for everyone.
The difficult light is well managed.
Excellent work.
Regards Jean.

quel charmant portrait de ces deux dame superbe de très belles dames élégantes superbe compo et vue comme elle tient son ombrelle et l'autre la feuille verte quelle image.
Bravo et amitié

Hi Will
A delightful candid as a lasting memory of the day with two happy smiling faces. Like the use of the umbrella, apart from the frame in enables the subjects to relax for an informal portrait of this happy and successful pair. They sure will always look at this with fond memories...
Lovely tender shot.

PS: It was a quick shot taken during my brief stop along the hoighway using zoom lens and perfectly safe minus the security issue.
Best regards

Hello Will

Yes it's the expression of the shorter girl that makes the image. It is revealing of her character and a sense of fun.

Mayakovska station - no tripod - hand held. Colour temperature adjusted with eye dropper in LR by clicking on the most neutral tones and it auto-corrects. I think it is a little off myself but its better than the yellow sodium type light that illuminated the scene originally.

Take care

Hi Will
well, i guess an umbrella really does work to block off the sun doesn't it, we can tell clearly how effective it is.
and you're right, the shorter girl seems to be in admiration or something, whatever the case may be she has a wonderful facial expression going on.

you timed the moment well. I bet both girls would enjoy a copy of the shot. thanks for this one

Hi Will,

Nice shot with happy expressions. I have this feeling however, that the taller girl noticed your presence and just had this restrained smile and yet willingly gave it, sort of submitting to the photographer. Or perhaps, she was just simply shy, I feel like she was a bit feeling conscious. Well, just my thoughts... ;-)

Have a good day!
