In the churchyard of The Parish Church of Saint Catherine, Ventnor, Isle of Wight.

We were there to attend the late lamented Isle of Wight International Jazz Festival, some of whose artists were to play in this church. We duly rolled up to hear a concert by Art Themen and Gwilym Simcock. But as we were going in I saw this girl apparently "Taking Five" among the gravestones. But my title comes not from Jazz, but Schubert's String Quartet No. 14.

Hello Will,
This title was also used for a play and a movie, but no doubt Schubert was first.
It's an original composition, looking less alarming with the description of the circumstances. Absolutely a suitable photo for B&W.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Will,

The place is maybe not perfect for sleeping but after a Jazz Festival one must take a break.
Sharpness and clarity are perfect.
Excellent presentation and nice composition.
Very well done, TFS.

Have a nice day,
John.

Hello Will,
Excellent title, great composition. Black and white suits perfectly.

Hi Will.

This is an unusual scene well executed in B/W, some people take it easy and don't care while suffering from the "sleeping disorder". More and more folks realize the close connection between the two worlds, not just in dreams, but in real life. By the way, I enjoy both, namely smooth jazz and Schubert tunes, too. TFS !!!

BRAVO!!!

Excelent work, like it!

Have a nice Sunday afternoon!

Saša

Bonjour Will,

Elle est très belle cette composition des plus originales. La dame au repos semble faire corps avec la terre du cimetière. Elle semble vraiment confortable. Le noir et blanc accentue la beauté du lieu.

Bon dimanche

Serge

Dear Will,

It's a kind of photo that really stands out of the pictures usually uploaded here on TE. It also proves that not the camera makes the photographer, as I see you made it with a compact (bridge) one. Lights are beautiful, which is enhanced by the excellent BW conversion.

Best Wishes,
Gy.

PS: I wouldn't lie on the ground on a cemetery, who knows... :)

Hello Will,
this picture looks so natural and stunning at the same time, the girl is resting in a casual and relaxed way, the scene would look ordinary if she was at a park but in this context and in your composition, it looks extraordinary. I like how the young girl and the luminous flowers contrast with the centuries old tombstones and how the scene makes us think about life, death and the passing of time. The monochrome is wonderful, the textures, the highlights and the shadows are all significant. The girl made me think of a masterpiece by a Greek sculptor of the 19th century, you can see it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yannoulis_Chalepas#/media/File:Tomb_of_Sofia_Afentaki.JPG
Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,
Ourania

Hello Will,

Perhaps rather a slightly strange place to lie down and relax in the sunshine but at least the neighbours won't be noisy and keep you awake. And your photograph is perfectly taken, the figure of the recumbent girl placed just right in the frame before a pair of brightly lit gravestones and the darker background. A technically perfect image too with lovely light, fine tones, contrasts and textures and exquisite details and sharpness.

And, of course, so apt a title! Of course, I love that beautiful and haunting Schubert string quartet though of late I've been getting more and more frustrated with old Schubert (even though he was less than half my age when he died) and myself as I try to battle my way erratically through a couple of his piano impromptus.

Excellent!

Kind Regards,

John.

Hi Will
I suppose it is a place of rest, so no point in waiting to die to enjoy is calm atmosphere! It works well in black and white, and the light is nicely powerful. Quirky photo, I really like it
Cheers

Hello Will,
Inspired by your intriguing picture and note a googled for the combination of girl and graveyard and found out the not only you and Schubert found inspiration by this combination.
I think this could be a dangerous place to sleep when it is a dark night.

Hello Will,
This is really well seen and a very interesting combination of old and weather-beaten headstones and the girl having a rest right next to them. Her pose with her arm on her head makes the scene even more curious.

Hi dear Will

So high sense and humor you did have. Greatly sharp and clear presentation is already your trademark, The great choice to use B&W is so tatsy.

All the best and have a good day! Takero

Hi Will

Nice slice of life well enhanced by the B&W mood, looks as a murder scene! This only can happen in UK, where cemetries are kind of parks

Hi Will
Time to slow down the pace of life, relax and it's high time to switch off appropriately at 'a place of peace and rest' The sticking out gravestones lends this a strong anchor point. A calming image that reflects the title very well, beautifully observed and captured.
Best wishes

Hello Will

Well spotted & a fine capture too. I like how the white on her hand is mirrored by the white on the tombstones (and by the flowers too).

And a great title too, of course.

Benny

Hi Will
I don't think the woman knows how funny or strange she looks laying here next to the gravestones lol
its almost as if someone had forgotten to Bury her.
all in good humour though. fun shot and you certainly took advantage of the situation at hand
cheers
Craig

Interesting title and composition, with a great choice for black and white, given the idea conveyed. The white petals scattered are a great addition to the composition, as well. Very nice work, congratulations!

Ciao Will

Well I've been known to hang out at too many graveyards myself, but this is just creepy. Sleeping on a grave. Wowee. Anyway, an excellent capture, stunning B&w tones, contrasts and light. I love the little buttercups in the grass, a lovely touch.

Thanks for sharing, have a great day
Lisa

Hi Will!
A very unusal shot and a scene we don't see everyday. It transmits a very relaxing atmosphere with the little white daisies covering the ground. Really great in b&w!
