I find it hard to leave India, so I remain in the memories of my many journeys to that great country.

This is from late 1991, when I travelled through the interior of India, from Bombay to Calcutta. The cultural highlight was probably the couple of days I spent in Khajuraho in a remote area of Madhya Pradesh state. Khajuraho is famous for the about 20 Hindu and Jain temples remaining of the 85 originally built here from the 10th to 12th centuries. They are spread out over a fairly large area around an ordinary small town.

This is the Matangeshwar temple, finished in the year 1000 and dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. It is still being used by worshippers, not just by tourists.

Here is a larger version.

You can see two more photos from Khajuraho as workshops. One shows a small temple with a small crowd of mainly local visitors, the other a temple, water and birds.

All photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

The approximate location is shown in the Map: view.

Hello Gert,

Your scan is again very successful, incredible how you makes pleasant pictures.
The temples is truly very nice maintain everything clear and pleasant to look at.
Lovely composition excellent presentation too.
Very well done, TFS.

Have a nice day,

Hello Gert,
The abundance of people, tourists and local added vivid colors to the already attractive sight.
Wonderfully preserved old photo, I could have thought it was by a digital camera.
The place is attractive and with endless objects for photography, though I never been to India.
Enjoy your weekend,

Le parc et la végétation se fondent dans le tout quel temple avec toutes ces personnes en couleur superbe et quelle architecture quel rendu sur la pierre merveilleuse vue.
Belle journée

Beautiful and ornate temple I hope this will survive another 1,000 years even though the construction does not look very sturdy and secure. Nice to have the people for scale. Good pov showing the surrounding areas especially the green garden. Good details. Well done, tfs.

Bonjour, cher ami Gert,
Ces temples nous les regardons avec admiration, mais ce sont peut-être eux qui nous regardent.
Un spectacle de 1991 qui n'a vraisemblablement pas beaucoup changé.
Un réel plaisir à regarder et à comprendre.

Hello Gert,
excellente présentation de ces anciens temples,
avec cette photo qui date aussi.
Belle qualité pour un scan
Bon W-E

Witaj Gert!
A very interesting buildings!
Excellent frame and colors.
Persons add flavor to this composition.
Well done.
Best regards.

Hello Gert,
the movement and the colours of the pilgrims' clothes make the scene lively and delightful, it's intersting how they've all gathered at one spot leaving the rest of the scenery so peaceful. I like the details and the colours of this exotic scene, the richness and temperature of the colours is pleasing and reassuring. The complementary views in the workshop make our impression of this special place more thorough. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

Hello Gert,

I absolutely understand your reluctance to leave India, it is a fascinating country with warm and welcoming people.
These temples are very distinctive in style, looking as if they have been made in ever decreasing layers!
I love that so many people are interested in visiting the site, especially those dressed in traditional costume. They add life and human interest to this already interesting location.
You have used a good lead creating a natural flow to the focal images.

You have some amazing journalistic shot and how well you have been able to scan them! What an archive!

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Ciao Gert, great view of fascinating ruines, fine details, excellent clarity, splendid light and wonderful colors, very well done, my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hello Gert,
I've heard a lot of the temples of Khajuraho but have never been there.
They seem to be situated in a fairly spacious area and in quite green surroundings. The setting seems to contribute to their beauty. Taking into account the size of the grounds I guess it must be possible to visit some temples at a quieter moment. On the main photo the site appears to be very busy.
I suppose there must be lots of architectural details to admire.
Altered image # 1 with the birds gives the impression that you visited a temple somewhere in a nature reserve.
A very attractive series.
Best regards, Paul

Dear Gert,

I have to say I would have chosen the WS picture as main upload and this as a WS. I consider the WS version as more elaborated mainly regarding composition. It has a well thought point of view. Pleas don't get me wrong, this a good photo as well.

Hi Gert,
Interesting and beautiful architecture well presented and taken from a good POV, a composition well balanced with all these people, tfs.

Hello Gert,
I can imagine that you enjoy the memories of this travel through India.
In that non digital photo era you had to be much more selective by taking photo’s than nowadays when you can easily make more than 500 a day.
Fortunately for you, but now also for us you do have a lot beautiful pictures of that period.

Hello Gert,
Beautiful photo of these temples. The level of detail is excellent and the white background works well for the warmly coloured stones. The many people on the right hand side add some nice extra colours as well. The view is composed cleverly.

Hello Gert,
really India must be the Paradise of a photographer because of it is a different civilization far away from this in West.Very nice presentation of the complex of Matangeshwar temple with lot of people and natives to visited it.Their present situation after almost 1000 years of construction, make us to admire the whole stability as its architectural style.

Have a good week,Danos

Hello Gert,
interesting architecture of temples. Nice 3 slides. Fine comment and photos from your archive. Great journey you had.
Have a nice evening.

Hi Gert
i couldn't argue with anything you said.
India seems to be one of those countrie swith a never ending supply of photos to be had.

amazing to think this place is built in the year 1000, thats almost as old as some of your scanned images!
Kidding of course :) Just having some fun.

I can't remember the city, but we visited similar temples in India looking EXACTLY like these ones here.
It was quite the sight to see.

even with the blown-out white sky, the photo has alot to offer. I'm becoming more accepting of white skies now :)

see you around

Hello Gert,
You're presenting beautiful architecture from India.
What makes this picture special in my opinion: the colourful concentration of people in the same triangle form as the roofs of the temple.
Have a nice day,

Hi Gert, Finally the picture from India from the place I remember very well. Ah, Khajuraho, famous for its erotic sculptures. Usually I want to see all the churches, wats, mosques and temples in the place, so I looked at my pictures if I had this one. I think that I have found. Very strange, but when I was there in 2009 there were almost no people on my photos. There were few tourists and I remember now that the arrival of six old ladies without men was quite a sensation in the area and we had funny adventures and propositions :).
If you do not mind, in Workshop my two pictures (I have only one on TE).

Hi Gert
This temple complex does look grand that you managed to achieve good detail throughout to the best of your ability. good dof although there's a slight colour shift there. The colourful crowd breaks through the contrast off setting the scene nicely. Well done capture.
Best regards

Hi Gert,
I can understand fully why you find it hard to leave India, It is a fascinating and wonderful place, one that I would happily return to time an again. Beautiful temples here, and it is amazing to think how long they have been standing there and hopefully will continue to do so. Thanks for sharing your memories of these kind of places. Perhaps as the world keeps modernising at such a rapid rate, and things are destroyed for no reason, eventually memories and photo's might be all that we have left of some special places that once were.

in some aspects most of the temples has the same basic design, including the very old ones. I can recognize most of the same elements I saw in other regions of india here. nice details of the buildings and the people.

Hello Gert

They look similar to Angkor Wat temples in Cambodia. Good repetition and the people add scale and animate the scene. Excellent sharpness and their colourful clothes stand out too. Tfs!

Hej Gert,
Spännande och intressant arkitektur! Också intressant text med och en bra bild med många detaljer och färger. Som vanligt m.a.o.

Hello Gert,
Very beautiful these temples amidst green vegetation, the tourists enliven the scene.

Hi Gert!
I believe it has many more tourists now. I have been there and there was a ceremony going on, with lots of locals but there were also many tourists in the area. I'll try to select some photos. A very good composition, you give a good idea of the place!

Hi Gert,
Quite an extraordinary place, I thought it will be Cambodia. The shape of the temple is so unique. Plenty of people which add so much color here. Quite a old photo and yet relatively young in comparison to other in your gallery.
Very well done,

Hello Gert,
I love the multi-colored clothing of the tourists, introducing a pleasant variety to the colors of the photo. The temples are interesting structures, too.

Dear Gert
The park and the nature merge into the temple with what all these people in beautiful color and what architecture which made the wonderful stone view.
best regards.

Hi Gert,

The presence of the crowd is annimating the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the temples. The good luminosity is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.
