[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is another oldie from my university expedition to East Greenland in the summer of 1970.

Here, at the Danish air base at Mestersvig in Scoresbyland (you can see the location if you click on Map:view) we were watching as this helicopter was being refuelled in preparation for taking our little group south over the mountains and over the top of Kolossen and its glaciers to the north part of the Schuchert valley down which we were to have a 40 mile walk and a short boat trip before arriving at the deserted hut at Syd Kap on Scoresby Sund.

Please ignore the exif data because this photograph was taken on Kodachrome 64 colour slide film with my old Edixa Prismat manual SLR. Unfortunately, having updated to Windows 10, my old slide scanner no longer works with this computer so I copied this slide by using a rather primitive home-made set-up using a small desk lamp, an old shoe box, a piece of white paper as a diffuser and my Canon DSLR with a macro lens attached.

Hello John,

For some our friends here on TE it is prehistory. 1970, recently Will posted the picture from 1968. My oldies do not qualify to show :(. Superb quality for the old picture. Nice colours, no trace of noise or dirt, interesting scene. Gopod film used and good scanning.
Merry Christmas to you and your family!!

WArm regards Malgo

Hello John,
I am totally amazed that you can make a copy like this with a shoe box (and some other things). The colours indicate it's a scan, but the slide must have been very well kept and you did a marvellous job with your home-made scanner. As for the picture itself it is very well balanced and expresses the excitement of preparing for a helicopter ride. Especially I like the road sign and the two persons watching the procedures. I suppose the sign showed the distances to Copenhagen, Moscow, New York etc.
I guess you didn't try the VueScan, which I downloaded when my Mac didn't want to co-operate with my scanner?
Kind regards,

Hello John,

In 1970 was the safety not priority, I see no extinguishers, notwithstanding very important.
Your old picture showing us perfect the mentality of 45 years ago.
Composition and presentation are excellent to look at.
Very well done, TFS.

Best regards,
Merry Christmas to You and Your family.

Il va partir et s'envoler avec les bidon de fuel quelle image un grand hélico avec les hommes qui s'affèrent à le préparer superbe.
Belle journée

Hi John,
This is truely something different. Old slide from Greenland's summertime. And a helicopter of that era.
Wow, your improvised scanner is a success!

Hi John

Well blow me down, I was just thinking as I looked at the very impressive larger version, what a great scan this is!

Time to throw scanner away and get a new pair of shoes. It's as sharp a rendition of a 1970s 35mm shot as I've seen on this site. Remarkable. And the subject and colour is marvellous too. Not being an expert in helicopter design or the quality of Greenland's fingerposts and air-base buildings, there are few clues, for me anyway, that this was taken 45 years ago. Amazing.

Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year

This kind of old photos are interesting and refreshing to me.

Hello John,
You were very adventurous. It sounds like a great trip. Your slide copying technique worked very well. A lovely look back at what you were doing in 1970.
Best wishes, Ann
