A canal near Quới Sơn, Châu Thành, Bến Tre, Vietnam in the Mekong delta.

We were canoeing down this beautiful canal, overhung with palms. It was quiet, peaceful, mysterious even. Then another canoe roared past, powered by a large outboard motor. It broke the spell, but also reminded me that the local inhabitants, even in this quite remote spot, had every right to the stuff of modern life. What right had I to expect them all to be living in an antiquated time-capsule?

Hello Will,
This trip looks like a little adventure.
I guess it must have been quite hot and humid under these overhanging palms. I hope there weren't too many mosquitoes.
This is a wonderful image with the palms creating a tunnel effect and with the small boat at the end beautifully in the sunlight.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Will,
Beautiful this palm hedge on the river. One has the impression of being on the boat, it must be a great experience. I love the atmosphere and reflections on water. Bravo!
Thank you for sharing.

hiya Will

We wander in this tunnel of palms following the other boat to be sure to find an exit in this maze, as in a funfair
Cheers

Hello Will,
I like very much the perspective through the overarching leaves. Excellent management of the light and shadow contrasts, which contribute much to the overall atmosphere. The play of light across the water running down the centre of the frame makes an attractive lead-line towards the focal point offered by the disappearing canoe.

Bonjour Will,

Amicalement

Serge

Hi Will
What a beautiful sight gliding along a tunnel of palm trees into another world and a wonderful unspoiled natural beauty you must have experienced! A very good perspective and lighting control of a very evocative waterways, we can almost hear the forest sounds. All looks very serene. Great shot.
Best wishes

Hello Will,
I made a very short boat trip in a place like this somewhere else in the delta, but that was just going from nowhere to nowhere just for tourists. This seems to have been a more "real" place also used by the locals for ordinary purposes. The glimpse of the boat is an essential part of this photo, and the way the vegetation creates a kind of tunnel is quite fascinating.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Will,

Yes, I quite agree: I suppose we often think that places such as this should be solely for our own enjoyment and gratification and not for the local people who have every right to use whatever means of transport they desire. And, considering how we pollute our planet with evil emissions from our modern day means of transport, who are we to dictate how others behave?

But this is a scene of peace and tranquillity, the light pervading the thick covering of palms as a canoe disappears into the distance - powered by a man and not a stinking machine.

Beautiful soft light and colours and fine contrasts: yet still we can see perfect details in the deepest shadows and also the brightest parts of this image. Exquisite details and sharpness, as always.

Beautiful!

Kind Regards,

John.

Hello Will,

A very 'different' photograph!
I really like how the gloomy tunnel of fronds is highlighted by the sun, permeating the upper parts and casting a reflective line on the water.
You are right, this creates a palpable sense of mystery, especially with the figure disappearing round the corner!

Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi Will
Evocative image which captures the atmosphere of this part of the world. I like the glimpse of local life in the distance.
Your note reflects my thoughts on the subject too.
Best wishes
Kasia

Hello Will,
The Mekong delta is a spectacular expanse of water and this photo shows one of the quiet backwaters very well indeed. The boat is well caught as it turns the corner and the conical hat is so typical of Vietnam. I like the small splash of pink colour against the green foliage.
Excellent.
Kind Regards, Ann

Dear Will,

What a nice place! Excellently composed with the dark foreground and the bright background, drawing my eyes.

Best Regards,
György

A very tranquil place. Perfect balance of light and a leading boat.

Ciao Will

How blessed you are to witness the splendour of the Mekong. It's one of the many places on my bucket list, but in the short term I will have to satisfy my yearnings through your beautiful photo. There's a lovely sense of calm and tranquillity here, despite your out-board motor here. The green tones are delightful and you did well under very difficult lighting conditions.

Have a lovely day
Lisa
