I think I've weaned myself off the monochromes for a while. Vịnh Hạ Long (Ha Long Bay) seems to deserve a bit of colour.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is predictably a major tourist honeypot. And there was certainly evidence of the impact of tourism to be seen. Significant numbers of tripper boats were chugging about, most of which wouldn't stand a chance of getting a Maritime and Coastguard Agency certificate! There was a good deal of floating detritus as well: plastic and expanded polystyrene don't bio-degrade. And there was significant new development, particularly at Tuan Chau Marina, which boasts the biggest harbour in Viet Nam!

But the news isn't all bad. The place is still stunningly beautiful; several floating villages still survive, and it's big enough to absorb a lot of incomers. Like all environments though, it needs care if it's to survive relatively unscathed in the long term.

Hi Will...welcome back! What a great choice for your last trip,so far and so beautiful! And this pic is jst an example of what i hope to will see in the next days.Absolutely beautiful this natural corner made by sea and rocks, truly unique and taken in an excellent quality,i like your note too! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello Will,
I have been waiting for your Vietnam pictures and it's no surprise that the first one features a view of the sea and a few boats. From your description, and from my expectations of an ever-growing tourism industry, it could not have been easy to capture such a very uncrowded view of this place. I was here 22 years ago and this bay was already then a well established tourist hot spot. I think you were right not to do this in B&W. The tones of the sky and the water deserve to be seen as they really are.
Best regards,
Gert

Dear Will,

Stunning landscape taken at the right moment, with the tiny boat in the passageway. At first I was surprised it has colours, than I read your description and understood why. I am keen on seeing your other pictures of the trip.

Best Regards,
György

Hello Will,
Impressive how these huge rocks rise up perpendicular from the sea.
This looks like a gorgeous wonder of nature.
I've always wondered if Ha Long Bay is just a one day trip or an area where you better spend several days or a week.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Will,

Absolutely breathtaking! I've seen Hạ Long Bay in photos and films, and even recently from a video shot by a drone. Along with the limestone karsts it is often seen with junk boats, but how about the pollution. Thanks for treating us to an exotic gem on the globe.

Warm regards,

Bulent

Hi Will, Fabulous view specially seen on the big screen. So you went to Vietnam. I am looking forward to see the picture. Wonderful composition from this amazing place. You were lucky with the weather, blue sky and some small clouds look better over the rocks then the grey rainy sky I had there. yes, it is the main attraction in Vietnam, all go there unfortunately for environment.

Hello Will ,
Interesting note , as usual (i appreciate especially this kind of personnal note on TE) , and a beautiful view of the famous bay . Not a perfect blue sky , but some little sunshines , that is not so frequent is this cloudy region .
Regards

Hi Will
This is spectacular nature wonder and nothing can take away the stunning-ness of the vista in any weather condition even in really moody atmosphere. The amazing limestone formations rising out of the water always look fantastic they extend the depth & feel of vastness in comparison to the tiny boat! You were blessed by such subtle light and colour on the early hour of the day and the water sheen further adds to the beauty. A place to let our imagination go wild and you can understand why there are fantastic legends about this wonderful place. A fantastic shot which makes me feel very serene and majestic to view, Congrats.
P/s: Thks to your +ve words on last upload, always appreciate your comments.
Best regards

Hi Will
So you're back from your Vietnam trip!
You chose superb light to photograph this stunning seascape and I wonder how you managed to make this scenery look so wild! I heard it's very touristy, here it looks serene.
I'm off to Burma tomorrow.
Have a nice weekend
Kasia

Hi will,
You sum up the state of this world heritage site very well - I loved it but at the same time was disturbed by the rubbish and high density of tourist boats. A lovely photo with colours and light that are realistic and beautiful.
Best wishes, Ann

Ciao Will

Yes, time for some colour. I can't imagine these beautiful karst monoliths in anything but. A difficult shot with the strong light and cloudy conditions, but a successful one. I love the glassy green water, makes me want to jump straight in.

Thanks for sharing, have a lovely day
Lisa

Hi Will!
I've been there in 2008 and the weather wasn't that good but the place is amazing. The little boat lets us understand the real size of the rocks and colours are very nice, you even got a blue sky. Really hope they don't destroy it all with tourism and pollution.
