I leave Nepal but remain in the autumn of 1972. When I scanned ny old photos from Nepal, which I have been posting for the last several weeks, I also digitalized a handful of Agfacolor slides that I had stored in the same box, photos taken during the weeks before I reached Nepal.

This is from the old part of the large city of Lahore in northeastern Pakistan, close to the border with India. The old district is a maze of narrow alleys with local markets and small mosques. I remember it as one of the most chaotic areas I had so far seen and I was a bit nervous about taking photos. I felt that my camera would not be appreciated by some people, but maybe that was mainly due to my own lack of experience. I was quite young and Pakistan was very different from anything I had seen before.

I have no idea why wool was handled like this in the street, but this is among the few photos from such a long time ago that I actually remember taking. You can see a larger version here.

Another amazing scene, you have really a fantastic collection of documentary and reportage photos, perfect quality of the scanned photo

Hello Gert,

This is so different from the Lahore that I witnessed at the end of last century. I think I would have enjoyed seeing this which has a timelessness about it; no evidence of the 21st century, or even the 20th century!
Many areas depended on wool for their wealth. I wonder if this was a bartering market.

I had a friend who used to buy wool in this state from the farmer. She used to spin it and knit it, to make waterproof jumpers.

Thank you for sharing this,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert, another good photo of another interesting scene of everyday life in another place, very well composed and captured in this interesting image with good sharpness, light, color and quality. A good job well done, congratulations my friend. Thank you for sharing this interesting work.

Good evening and happy weekend.
Best wishes from the south of Spain.
Angel.

Bonjour Bert
Une belle image de rue qui nous fait découvrir le travail pas facile de ces hommes. Ton image n'a pas pris une ride.
Amitiés et bonne soirée.

Hello Gert,
digging into the boxes with your old slides must be fascinating for you too, you keep finding great pictures that document exotic daily life from far places long ago. The title you chose leads to an amusing comparison and adds intrigue to the scene and the people's attitudes. It is a moody scene with great details, the man smiling, while probably teasing someone, is an interesting character who influences the whole picture. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
Ourania

Hello Gert,
I've never been to Pakistan but in the past I heard so many wonderful stories of travellers to that country. Despite that, I'm afraid it's no longer a possible travel destination for westerners.
This looks a little like some of your Afghani scenes. A very very busy man's world.
Here nobody seems to mind that you take a picture. The scene looks quite relaxed.
I'm a little surprised by Bev's remark that at the end of the 90-s so much had changed there. I know that many new buildings have come up but I'd expect that such scenes are still seen there.
Certainlly a wonderful picture of a society so different from ours.
Best regards, Paul

Dobro vece.
Lep pogled, interesantan i dobar tekst ...
Paja.

Good evening.
Nice view, interesting and good text ...
Good trenuitak recording and contrast, nice people demonstrated on the streets and wool in the market.
Good work, caught a nice moment with people, beautiful colors.
Good evening and all the best with a nice remembrance of the visit to Lahore.
All the best for the weekend, good luck.
Paja

Hello dear Gert,

Hi Gert,it's always a pleasure to read your note before to watch the pic, this wasn't the most happy day of your life..ehehe..but another time the pic is very interesting, this wool market is incredible and the quality of the pic is still very high like your others.Have a nice WE and thanks, luciano

Nice; a tower of wool surrounded/closed by people.
Excellent daily life pic.
Curious; looking at the tones it feels Agfa (reds suppressed).

Ciao Gert
qualche anno fa ho letto "I pilastri della terra" di Ken Follet, ricordo bene la descrizione del commercio della lana in epoca medievale. A parte i costumi, questa scena mi ricorda proprio quella parte di romanzo.
Buon we

Hello Gert, Another interesting photo and scene from your increible 1972 trip. What memories you have!
I continue my trip in Tuscany. As I whave written already, it is not quite an easy trip. Sometimes I am quite desperate with the buses but all went well frinally, I was very lucky. Now I am in Siena, I am afraid it will be busy with tourists. But on Monday I go to the last town this time - Volterra. I asked in the Information Office how to get there and what I heard? Nothing goes from Siena to Volterra. No train,no bus. Anyway, they do not know anything, I must look in Google. So again a piece of adventure before me.
Warm regards Malgo

good old memories, it was easy to take street pictures abroad in those days, and they are fully concentrated on their work; only men were admitted in the city streets!

Hello Gert,

Maybe is the picture today almost the same in this country.
I am very satisfied with the picture, absolutely old but real a daily life picture, maybe was the wool than a lot of money value.
A very busy day with all the sellers close to each other.
Pleasant panorama view about the area.
Perfect depth and perspective.
Excellent composition and lovely presentation.
Very well done, TFS.

Have a nice Sunday,
John

Hello Gert

Excellent sharpness and definition for an analogue film shot from 1972. I was still in high school back then. A superb daily life scene from Pakistan with natural looking colour and saturation. The stacked wool makes an immediate focal point and the sorters and pickers and other people animate the scene. Tfs.

Cute title I like it! Those poor sheep owners probably don't get much for their wools. Nice documentation of the daily life from long time ago with people negotiating. Good color retention and good details. Well done, tfs.

Ciao Gert, interesting daily life scene, lovely composition with a lot of people, splendid light, fine details, excellent clarity snd wonderful colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hi again Gert
Much as I'd love to see more photos from Nepal, I'm glad you chose to post an image from this country which is high on my "travel wish list" (more specifically Karakoram Highway).
Fabulous daily life shot! I wonder if they still do this kind of thing.
I know the feeling of not being sure whether you should be taking photos in situations like this...
Hoping to see more of Pakistan soon!
Have a nice evening
Kasia

Hi Gert!
Another interesting country that is not so easy to visit at the moment! I wonder if they still do this there! It's really interesting, the way they sell the wool and all those men around, talking. Another great daily scene from the old days!

Hello Gert,
the two characters at the front of the picture sorting through the fleeces appear to be the only ones actually working whilst the others enjoy a little chit chat,it`s a remarkably evocative scene that is so enjoyable for me to view and must bring back many memories for you.
Best regards Les.

Hi Gert
hmmmm....something just dawned on me...thinking about your past Pakistan photos of people, i don't think i recall many of them including smiling/laughing men.
Am i correct in that assumption???

because here i noticed immediately the man on the left with a large smile - that's nice to see.

nicer than that large pile of wool! :)
i guess they're packaging the wool up in bags?

a busy but interesting street scene.
and i bet this task is still practised today on the streets.

another blast from the past
cheers
craig

hi
interesting view from daily life you captured.

Hello Gert,
Thanks for another interesting view of street life in the 1970's. I wonder how clean the wool actually stays, or if they wash it thoroughly before actual use in a garment. All of the different men on this street provide for some nice detail.

Hola Gert

Well, a busy street scene, also a well document of life years ago in Lagore
Wool must be from goats as in Nepal?
Once more interesting to see men wearing white cloths, mainly all are busy, from them I like the one with the wide smile
The small stall at the left are the same using today in India

Great to discover new marvels, enjoy watching, warm regards
Maria

Fascinating scene Gert, something biblical about it, or at least ancient. That smiling man would have made an admirable portrait. When you see such human toil, the general hubbub, it makes you wonder if we are that different from bees, contributing in our anonymous ways to the general welfare of the hive, until we are spent and discarded. Regards. Klaudio.

Hello Gert,

An interesting note you have written. But no-one here seems to be at all troubled by your camera - or perhaps they were all too busy and so didn't actually notice you.

This is an excellent photograph (which has scanned very well from Agfacolor) of this busy street teeming with people and with the huge mound of wool dominating the foreground. But, yes, why do this in an open and busy street and not in some sort of warehouse?

There's tons of interesting things and interesting people to look at and examine in this picture which has wonderful atmosphere, fine light and colours and exceptional details and sharpness.

Fabulous!

Kind Regards,

John.

Hi Gert
You've captured the hustle and bustle of the place superbly in this well composed street scene as I marvel the mount of raw cotton as main focus of interest and a wide range of colours. Fascinating glimpse of yester years and one can imagine the bickering and banter going on....
Great work well put together, tfs
Best wishes

Hello Gert,
A great capture of this daily life scene with nice details. Well done.
Best regards.
Gigi

A very unusual sight on a photo from some 42 years back, Gert. Amazing stuff.
The vibrant wool market action conveyed superbly, and faces expressions of one guy on far left, telling about the "wheeling and dealing" action.
A well preserved old pic.

Hello Gert,
Interesting daily life photo from 43 years ago. I bet you this was from the time when Agfa required special processing, different from Kodak.
Regards,
MT

Olá Gert,
uma foto bem interessante mesmo essa, mostrando costumes e negócios bem diferentes do que estamos habituados no ocidente. Bela captura essa.
Parabéns e Abraço,
Lucas

Hi Gert,
I can't believe this was taken 40+ years ago! The quality seems exceptionnal to my untrainned eye.
The frame is so busy! there are so many details popping out every time I look at it! I love it!
There is something with film photography that digital is still unable to reproduce. Might be the warmth, the grit, the grain...I don't know but there is an atmosphere that can only be felt with film.
Very interesting daily life shot!
Cheers,
Marc
