Temple of Aphaia

The Temple of Aphaia (Greek: Ναός Αφαίας is located within a sanctuary complex dedicated to the goddess Aphaia on the Greek island of Aigina, which lies in the Saronic Gulf. It stands on a c. 160 m peak on the eastern side of the island approximately 13 km east by road from the main port.

Aphaia (Greek Ἀφαία) was a Greek goddess who was worshiped exclusively at this sanctuary. The extant temple of c. 500 BC was built over the remains of an earlier temple of c. 570 BC, which was destroyed by fire c. 510 BC. The elements of this destroyed temple were buried in the infill for the larger, flat terrace of the later temple, and are thus well preserved. Abundant traces of paint remain on many of these buried fragments. There may have been another temple in the 7th century BC, also located on the same site, but it is thought to have been much smaller and simpler in terms of both plan and execution. Significant quantities of Late Bronze Age figurines have been discovered at the site, including proportionally large numbers of female figurines (kourotrophoi), indicating – perhaps – that cult activity at the site was continuous from the 14th century BC, suggesting a Minoan connection for the cult. The last temple is of an unusual plan and is also significant for its pedimental sculptures, which are thought to illustrate the change from Archaic to Early Classical technique. These sculptures are on display in the Glyptothek of Munich, with a number of fragments located in the museums at Aigina and on the site itself.

Ottima la gestione delle luci.

Hi Danos
I guess there are many of these all over Greece right?
looks like the place is empty, that makes it so much more enjoyable to be honest. for some reason it makes the structures seem that much larger and more imposing.

fun shot of this ancient building, well taken in the lighting that was provided.

Very nice capture of this antique temple. With good pov and layout. Most probably one of the best kept temples fof the antiquity.
Many interesting notes makes your entry a perfect TE job.
TFS and best regards

Hallo Danos,
sehr gute Präsentation vom Tempel von Aphaia, gratuliere!

Hello Danos,
This is nice shot taken from a great POV. The low perspective places the ruins against the deep blue sky creating fine contrast. The angle of the shot works well giving the photo a sense of depth and direction.

Hi Danos,

This looks just as impressive as the Parthenon in Athens, perhaps even more so without the scaffolding that was in Athens in 2013. Excellent sharpness and a fine angled pov showing 2 facades. Nice repetition of the columns. The yellow flowers and faint red tint contrast well against the blue sky. Tfs.

Hello Danos,
nice presentation of old historic temple on Aegina. Style is a bit like Akropolis in Athens. Well done photo.
Have a nice evening.

Hi Danos,
I have lived in Munich for 4 ears so obviously I went to Glyptothek as well. I guess I must have seen the marbles from this temple. Beautiful structure. Relatively much preserved here.
I like it set against the beautiful blue sky.
Very well done!

Hello, dear friend,

Simple but very nice photo, without extra details and crowd of tourists. I also like this combination of the clear blue sky and these old pinky stones of the columns.
We know, that every stone or every brick in your country is a reminder of these ancient times.

Best wishes,

Hola Danos
No as romantic as the last ones but well presented with informative note
Like the angle chosen to show a great perspective of temple and columns contrasting well with the very blue sky
Also nice golden light
Well done, regards

Hi Danos
Great sample of the wonderful classic Greek architecture. Good perspective from such a POV.

Dear Danos, feel free to criticize several of my photos, be sure I'll reply. Revelant photo note dealing with that antique temple, it was built centuries ago to worship the Greek goddess Aphaia. Strong stone columns still exist today, good sharpness, thanks

Dear Danos,
amazing temple, amazing old architecture, superb sky, fine colors, fine light and bright, good sharp.
Thanx for sharing.
