On my way to the old battlefield at Khe Sanh in April 1995 I stopped briefly in the town of Dong Ha, a short distance south of the old border between South and North Vietnam, very close to what used to be a Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) during the war.

I took this photo just a few minutes after my last upload, "Sleeping on the job". This man leaning on a an old cannon, a leftover from the war, was not posing for me. He had been standing like that for a while and didn't move an inch when I approached him, just gave me a smile. In a workshop you can see a picture from a few moments earlier.

Both photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Here is a larger version.

Hello Gert,
nice the snapshot with the native to lean on the old and abandon cannon looking at your lens with this way.As i see there is and a tank near it.Informative the WS as we can see the position of the old 155mm cannon.

Hi, Gert,
This scene reminds me only one situation. Once I've met the old Soviet anti-aircraft system on the top of the hill in Luangprabang. It was so amazing attraction for everybody. I think you saw that post.
Good and so peaceful composition, in the "end of war" style.
Have a nice evening!

Howdy Gert,

An antique reminder of the terrible war invasion of Vietnam, the rusting huge canon barrel embraced by the citizen. Would like to see it scrapped for metal, and removed for ever.

thanks for sharing,

Ciao Gert
Ciao e buona serata

It is an amazing combination: a smiling man and a cannon, this situation is irreconcilable to me, the photo itself is perfect, very well captured
regards Ryszard

Dobro vece.

Good evening.
Good work by scanning the slide, shown nice place and moment with a photo workshop.
The other war machines and terrible memories of the war.
Good evening and all the best with beautiful memories of 1995.

Witaj Gert!
Excellent reportage foto!
Fantastic scene, interesting gun and tank.
Good frame and old colors.
Congratulations journalist!
Good evening

Hi Gert
this guy should hang out with the guy operating the rickshaw....seems like they have alot in common

I'm so glad you took this shot from this perspective and NOT straight on...in that compo you wouldn't have the long perspective of the barrel as you do here.
This was clearly the best way to go.

look how large those shells are! man oh man...scary stuff.

love the guys hat too!
nice shot

Hello Gert
The simple man obviously doesn't mind having his photograph taken as he leans gently on the deadly looking cannon. While it is impossible to guess his thoughts, the composition with the oblique pov is fantastic. There is also a hint of a tank in the background. Dark reminders of the terrible decades of the war that the country sustained. Great capture and thanks for sharing it.
Best regards

Hello dear Gert,
Also this one from your archive is a unique one.
Once dangerous "toys" of adults today a playground of kids.
Perfect scan and interesting notes.
TFS and have a nice evening,

Hello Gert,
The man seems to be perfectly at ease with his unusual collection, it`s a bit of a surprise though to see the cannon and tank still littering the countryside 20 years after the end of hostilities. The scrap value must have been considerable.
As usual a very fine conversion to digital.
Best regards Les.

Hello Gert,
he looks bored and lonely in the workshop picture and your interest in taking his photo was a pleasant distraction. The horrible weapons and the ammunition store have become calm and cozy places for the local people to hang out. It's ironic but a scene that has reoccurred thousands of times around the world. There are interesting details for the viewer who gets the chance to explore this site. The smile is great, it contrasts effectively the mood defined by the details, the subdued colours and the memories of the war. I like the workshop picture with more people too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

Hello my dear friend Gert
and thanks for sharing with us
another original photo
as always an original version with
the man leaning on an old cannon
I liked the description of the man standing
there and just giving you a smile
unusual presentation of a cannon
and a smiling man

Hello Gert,

Hi Gert, Impressive view of this old cannon and other staff left from the war. maybe not as dangerous as the landmines in Laos. The guy probably forgot about the cruelties of the war and can smile.
I prefer in fact the Workshop photo, the broader view with some women in lovely conical hats.

Wow! That's a big gun! I can just imagine what the sound like when it fires a round. I guess there are still several weapons leftover from the war in that country as evidence in this photo with a tank and a cannon. But I'm glad this man is smiling at you. Nicely captured and good scanning. Well done, tfs.

Ciao Gert

Hi dear Gert

Another precious archives, this time is for Vietnam of 20 yeras ago. I think country side almost remains unchanged, nice angle and nce to get his natsural smile!

All the best and have a good day! Takero

Hello Gertz.
A fantastic composition, which brings back memories of the bloody war in this country, at least the guy leaning on the barrel, I dedicate a friendly smile.
A good job of enforcement in the day and a perfect scan today.
Great photo, beautiful natural colors, very good lighting and excellent sharpness.
Well done. I love it.
You enjoy the weekend.
Best wishes.

Hello Gert,
A beautiful portrait of smiling man.
This I really like, is special.Very well composition, lovely presentation. Interesting notes.

Hi Gert
A nice straightforward shot made all the better for your explanation which adds so much to the impact of this interesting historical shot. He was very warm by the open young face from after the war and probably proud to speak to you. I think it must have been a fantastic experience you had, an intriguing shot and your observation is applauded. Congrats
Best regards

View great quality, joy of the child, with the cannon, the courage of his aggressors, and it's ridiculous to war
good Archive War

Hello Gert,

A splendid pair of photographs here demonstrating this fellow's very relaxed view of his work. He should be out with his cutting torch, chopping up this huge artillery barrel to sell for scrap, though perhaps metal prices were not so high in Vietnam 20 years ago as they are here now.

And your main picture is a fine portrait of this chap, smiling at you while he hangs across the remains of this fearsome weapon with not a care in the world. Lovely light and colours and exceptional details and a very good quality scan too.

Kind Regards,

Hello Gert,

Again one beautiful picture out of old Vietnam, this old canon it seem in a very well condition.
The farmer has his trophy on his farm, a little bit the same of seventy years ago on the farm of my parents. (1944)
An excellent perspective and depth picture, the background inclusive.
Nice scanned picture.
Very well composition, TFS.

Have a nice Sunday,

Hej Gert,
Många effektfulla linjer i bilden.
God Jul och Gott Nytt År

Hi Gert
Excellent shot that looks like taken out of a movie by Kusturica. It may be a different part of the world but the theme is so universal. A smiling soldier, obviously having not much to do, leaning against a weapon - leftover from the war that ended years earlier.
Best wishes

Hej Gert,

Hi Gert!
These arms have surely lived terribles days there. They are really impressive and your composition is perfect, also thanks to the pose of the man. Great daily scene!

Hello, Gert!

Did it still work at that time? I think I wouldn't dare standing in front of it! A very nice capture reminding the years of war there! Excellent job!

Helleo Gert,

wonderful picture from Dong Ha showing this man "hanging around". Perfect title and excellent composition. Excellent contribution to TE.TFS.

With regards from Luxembourg

Hej Gert,

en ovanlig foto och en stor ögonblicksbild. Vegetationen sprider sig på krigsmaskinen. Leendet visar en lugn, trevlig atmosfär.

En kraftfull bild!

Gott nytt år

Hello Gert,
The workshop photo reveals that this cannon is part of the scenery, not an item of display. It is curious, why would they leave it there if they were not planning to make it a monument? A high quality slide, as usual.
