Through the narrow streets of Florence the bell tower of Santa Maria del Fiore (Giotto’s Bell Tower) stands projected against the late afternoon sky.
Following his nomination as master of works on the construction of the new cathedral, Giotto began building the bell tower, a spectacular Florentine monument, which he did not, however, live to see completed.

When Giotto died, Andrea Pisano took over from 1337 to 1348, and when he too died, Francesco Talenti completed the work, presenting the city with a Gothic masterpiece just as we see it today.

Giotto's bell tower, 85 metres high and only 14 metres wide at the base, was built in just thirty years and cost the city seventy thousand florins. The Florentines were only too happy to pay to have, like their rivals Siena and Pisa, a monument which announced the city from afar. In that period the dome had not yet been built.

The three masters of works were also able to draw on the work of eminent artists to decorate the bell tower, artists of the calibre of Andrea Pisano, Luca della Robbia, and Donatello, who decorated it with sculptures and marble carvings.

The bell tower is completely clad in marble in three colours: the red marble of S. Giusto, the white of Carrara, and the green of Monte Ferrato.

this shot of today gives me the chance
to walk through the narrow streets of Florence
and here we see the bell tower of Santa Maria
del Fiore how many people down there walking
and everybody interested in something else
vivid scenery with life and interesting
have a nice new week

Hi Rosemary!
looks like both the smaller and larger versions are identical in size - perhaps, because the photo is vertical.. all the better, then!
This is an excellent vertical composition, with a very good balance of light and colours:)
The tower in the background, light and high, looks so airy and fragile against the soft blue sky - in contrast with the dark buildings on both sides of the photo.
I really must see Florence one day..
kind regards,

Hi Rosemary,
I imagine that it is difficult or maybe impossible to capture the tower in its entirety given the narrow streets. You have done well to include a vertical portion that extends down to near street level. The three types of marble are seen clearly. Good light, clarity and colours.

Hello Rosemary,
A picture where the viewer feels that they are in amongst the crowd. The point of view is excellent with the bell tower making a wonderful focal point. I like the light and colours. The detail is superb. Thanks for sharing, have a pleasant Sunday afternoon.

Hi Rosemary!
Very beautiful, attractive and interesting picture of always wonderful Firenze!
Sharpness, exposure, colors, vertical format, dof, chosen pov and composition are all excellent!
TFS - congrats,

amazing combine from tower, people and buildings together you captured.

hi Rosemary
An elegant and striking design, the decoration so beautiful and standing out so well against the less detailed buildings around it. I love the composition you chose, peeping between these tall buildings and this laneway really brings out the feeling of height, and the busy street scene makes a wonderful foreground. The color of the sky is beautiful too.
You have captured some amazing images from Italy :)

Thanks as always

P.S. All is good in Ireland, thanks! Sorry for my delay in replying, I have not had as much time on TE as I would like recently, new job is keeping me very busy for every waking hour. Now it a long weekend though, so time to chill out and enjoy the wonders of the photographic scholars here on TE :)

Hello Rosemary,

You're capturing well this cityscape by a good vertical format and excellent tone/clarity, so it's nteresting and impressive to see the narrow street of Florence and old buildings of both side. It's special for the tall Giotto's bell tower as monument. And, many people which are walking on this narrow street draw out the smell of life.

Kind regards,

Hello Rosemary,
Through the narrow streets we catch a beautiful glimpse of Giotto’s Campanile. This picture proves that not only the basilica and the bell tower are wonderful buildings in Firenze. Here I see more very beautiful and well restored buildings at both sides of the street.
The darker facades on the foreground allow us to focus our attention on the wonderful architecture in the center of the picture.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao Rosemary

Tu as réussi à bien maîtriser l'exposition de l'image.

Hi Rosemary, Isn't Florence delightful? Beautiful view of the Giotto Tower and the street life below. It seems it was rather cold there. Excellent vertical composition. Warm regrads MAlgo

Interesting street scene animated with characters, well framed buildings, colors and excellent contrast, good performance ...

Bonjour Rosemary
Un bon cadrage vertical dans cette rue étroite de Florence.Cette tour est majestueuse et elle est en bonne harmonie avec le bleu présent dans ce ciel.
Bonne journée

Ciao Rosemary

A beautiful daily life shot of this extraordinary city. It really is exquisite and the narrow street, tall campanile and people rushing about really lend themselves to the vertical frame. You did a great job with the light as the extremes of shade and light are obvious. In fact this looks like a photomerge or a very subtle HDR. In any even, you've evened out the light superbly. Excellent shot.

Warmest wishes and thanks for your kind thoughts for this weekend, a 4 day camp out in the Bush. Will bring the winter woollies :)

Hi Rosemary
glorious street shot from this iconic and beautiful city. It gives us a superb idea of the beautiful architectural gems and also the setting and popularity too. Amazing!

Have a good week - B.

Bonjour Rosemary,

J'aime beaucoup ce cadrage vertical qui donne de la profondeur à la composition et qui souligne bien le rapprochement des murs qui conduit le regard vers cette très belle tour de marbre.

Nice Rosemary,

Like it!

Hello Rosemary,

The Giotto’s Bell Tower looks great through the lane . A very well composed photo with great use of light. The deep depth of field is perfect. The colors are fine and the sharpness is excellent.TFS.

Hi Rosemary
What a magnificent scene of an impressive tower and this is quite a view, thks to the historical information. The colour, clarity and angle in this are super and you just keep staring at it going from detail to detail and marvelling at that tower with lots of surprises at every corner. I love the depth which gives a good feel for size of a classic shot in a well composed image. Fabs, tfs.
Best regards

Hello Rosemary,
a great pleasure to roam in the streets of Florence, even though they are well known or have become familiar through several walks, they always give you a sense of discovery and renew your interest. I like very much the depth and perspective within this large vertical frame, architectural marvels and ordinary buildings provide an interesting and solid setting for the flow of passers by. The colour palette is moody and elegant, the cold sky and the warm light in the window offer wonderful contrast. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,

Ciao Rosemary, gran bel taglio e ottima prospettiva, splendida luce e magnifica nitidezza, brava, ciao Silvio
