Saturday afternoon I was in Ghent a very nice old city with different narrow canals.
These picture shows the "Lieve" canal that now becomes use as touristic canal with small boats.
In background see you one of the most old buildings out of the medieval period.
Ghent has the last ten year a lot done for the city to make attractive

Thanks for visiting

History:
The "Lieve" is one of the oldest preserved shipping channels in Europe.
It was dug in an era of large urban economic development and esp. in the heyday of the Flemish urban economy.
Digging the "Lieve" was a huge engineering undertaking and a very heavy investment.
The Dear connected two of the most important economic centers of Europe. Ghent Throughout its history been a port and counted in the thirteenth century, though approximately 60,000 inhabitants.
This was one of the largest cities in Europe.
Damme was the port of Bruges, one of Europe's most important port and trading post of the day.
The "Lieve" is an example of an early concept rabotten channel (locks), without locks with lock chambers.
The "Lieve" is also interesting as an early example of channeling natural waterways and connections between river basins.

Hi John,
I did not know that there are so many beautiful old buildings in Ghent. A very pleasant picture with this boat along the canal. The red line along the boat attracts further attention.
Kind regards
Gunnar

hello John, I think that Ghent was also very attractive many years ago, not only in the last ten years. I like ghent also 35 years ago. I am joking, of course, it is a city with such a long history and great many of wonderful monuments. It most be very nice to go for a trip with this small boat and admire all medieval buildings. Wonderful atmosphere, still like in autumn, no sings for spring yet.

Hello John,
Nice view of the old city from the side of the canal. Well framed with the tree on the right. The boat with tourists is a good inclusion in the photo. Very well preserved beautiful old city and an equally beautiful capture through your lens with nice natural colours and superb clarity as usual. Nicely done, thanks for sharing.

Hello John,
The buildings lining this canal are very attractive. I like the oblique point of view; the passing boat is nicely placed and helps draw the viewer into the scene as well as providing an additional point of interest and a defined focal point. Excellent technical presentation.

Hi John
Belgium surely seems to have a never ending supply of photo opps doesn't it!
here we have another one.
I like how the subjects take up basically the entire frame, there are no dead spaces.
even the twig branches work well.
lovely shot
cheers
craig

Hello John,

The oblique line of the buildings with thier architecture is very nice to look at. The reflections on the water, which will in a second be crushed by the boat's wake, add to the composition.

Best regards

Jacques

Ciao John

Benny

Hi John,

The reflections on the water are assets to the composition. The length of the canal is giving depth to the scene. The point of view is showing the details and the colours of the buildings. The good luminosity is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.

Hi John
a perfectly chosen POV and wonderful execution make this an attractive and beautiful image. I love the diagonal sweep and irresistible lines, but it is the immaculate clarity and light here that make this a real winner. Superb imagery!

Have a great weekend - B.

Bonjour John,

Un très beau point de vue sur le canal . Il offre un très beau point de fuite. Les maisons de l'autre côté sont vraiment très belles. La gestion de la lumière très difficile à cause des nuages est parfaite.

Hello John, I'm very sorry for my late response, but recently I'm very busy. I want to thank you so much for visiting and comments. This is very beautiful picture of daily life scene and architecture. Fabulous reflection and beautiful colors, sharpness, clarity. Fantastic observation and executed image. Perfectly well done. Like it a lot.
Best regard, Barbara

Hello John,
a superb presentation of this picturesque and charming part of the city. You've exalted the important old channel through great use of perspective and a very well balanced composition. I like very much the arrangement of layers of interest that make this view dynamic. They overlap, giving an agreeable impression of solidity and harmony. The moody colours are marvelous, the reflection of the sky brings light to the low right part of the frame and offers balance too. The boat full of visitors adds vividness and interest. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,
Ourania

Hi John,

Hello Jhon!
I know the town! A sort of "Little Venice" of Flanders! Very beautiful! Beautiful photo with your boat that sails the channel between the characteristics homes!
Best Regards, Nino.

hello John
masterful composition with great perspective. i love the reflections in the clear water and its movement with the boat. the charming old buildings make a lovely backdrop. thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.

Hi John,
Such beautiful classic architecture and its reflection is wonderful. I love that the reflection is broken by the boat, bringing real life into the view. Very nice soft muted light too, with a very vibrant sky.
Thanks as always
Noel

Hello John,
Beautiful buildings and a very good perspective showing the canal on a diagonal. The sight-seeing boat is a fine feature. It is just about to temporarily destroy the fine reflections in the calm water, but we can still see most of the buildings mirrored upside down. Great colours and light.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hallo John!
I already have seen this picture somewhere ... ;-))
In spite of all these old facades the diagonals here provide a wonderful dynamics as the boat with its little bow wave does.
Ghent for sure stands on my "to do" list. It must be a worth visiting place.
Greetings from a bit springlike Siegen! Have a nice weekend!

Hello John,
very good POV and excellent angle at which the canal is running. I like the whole perspective as well as very good DOF in here. Great sharpness and pretty vibrant colors despite lack of sun. The boat with group of people adds some life and dynamism to this rather calm scene.
Great architecture as settings and well presented.
Thanks for sharing
Kamila

Hello John,

You paint a wonderful picture of Ghent with the photographs you share with us.
The canal is an interesting subject brought to a more animated state by the inclusion of the boat, which we can follow, as it leads into the m/g and the b/g. The buildings are sharply captured, making fine, sometimes distorted, reflections in the water.
I do like how you have included the bridge and the red building in the b/g; they make fine, backstops to the journey.

Have a great w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi John,
This is a lovely corner of Ghent. Your timing was excellent with the tourist boat at just the right place. I like the distortions that its waves introduce to the excellent reflections.

MT

Hi John,

Your timing was excellent with the boat. Your perspective is also very good wih the boat passing by diagonally across the photo. I also realise that a photo like this is only possible to take in Winter when the trees have no leaves. Also very nice reflections of the sky on the water of the canal.TFS and have a nice weekend!

Interesting details and history written about the Lieve canal in town, John.
Marvelous view of the tourists-boat cruise along, a bit "turbulenting" the nice reflection it had, but altogether added fine dynamism to the scene. Houses and warehouse along, havecdiff. colors, all mingle in harmony in the beautiful photo.
Enjoy a nice weekend,
Ike

Bonjour John,
You're capturing well this scene by a good composition and nice soft tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see white houses and the boat with elegant shape. The whole is harmonized well by beautiful color & light balance. And, the beautiful reflections and the contrasting blue-white sky draws out an additional good atmosphere, too.
Very well done

Hello John,
Belgium has some really magnificent architectural jewels.
Ghent is certainly one of them.Beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere-two things you combined and captured here perfectly to make this scene so captivating to us.
The image has outstanding clarity, sharpness and well mastered contrast-things which contribute also to the success of your work.

Hi John,

Well, I would say that whatever the city has done to make it attractive has undoubtedly worked! Your photos have made it even more so, and this is another fine example! A good time of year for this particular view and composition, the barren trees are not an obstruction to the beautiful architecture we can see along the canal. It's going to sound redundant, but it's another super perspective you've created with strong lines from left to right, converging into the near distance...a wonderful "JHM trademark." :) Hope there are many more to follow. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Take good care.

Dag John,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hello John,

Again, you have given us a fascinating note about this lovely canal which at one time must have been a main "artery" for transport of goods, trading and commerce. And the boats on this canal would have been carrying things like coal and building materials and food rather than tourists!

Your composition is superb, the line of the canal's accompanying pathway leading us across the frame perfectly so that we can admire the beautiful facades of these fine buildings many of which, I suppose, would have been warehouses in the past.

Gorgeous light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

Beautiful!

Kind Regards,

John.

A beautiful shot of Ghent, a city I've long wanted to visit. I think I've mentioned before, but it also has a tie to American history, as a treaty signed here in 1814 ended the War of 1812 between the US and Britain, a sideshow to the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century.

You present it nicely here as a city on the water; I hope to see those canals someday!

Andrew

The angled pov adds both dynamism and diminishing linear perspective from left to top right. Good timing to capture the passing boat in the canal. I might have boosted brightness a little in the fg and around the bg bridge. Nice warm cold color contrasts and excellent sharpness. Tfs!

You're capturing well this place by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the Lieve canal and old buildings along the its canal in Ghent. sehr gutes Foto von Gent, schöne Häuser und Farben, wirklich sehr gut, gratuliere!
Viele Grüße

Hi John,
a very peaceful and attractive image here. The canal and the beautiful architecture of the houses offer us a nice diagonal perspective, while the boat, the reflections on the calm water, and the clouds in the sky, are a few elements which add a high aesthetical level in your composition.
I love the branches of the tree, hanging in foreground.
Light and colors are skilfully managed.
Friendly regards,
Josep

Hello John,

An excellent position where you shoot the facade with a boat sailing in canal, very beautiful composition and color also. Your article is always attractive and so informative.

FABULOUS WORK,

with deep regards and thanks,
