Thank for viewing

The last days of 2012 I was in Ghent, took these picture of the Sheep stable and the nice Belfry
I do not want to comment on this building for the Belfry, I don't know of this is a profit for the city or a loss, both parties are always right in Ghent.

Belfry:
The 91-metre-high belfry of Ghent is one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city centre of Ghent, Belgium, the other two belonging to Saint Bavo Cathedral and Saint Nicholas' Church. It's height makes it the tallest belfry in existence. Through the centuries, it has served not only as a bell tower to announce the time and various warnings, but also as a fortified watchtower and town treasury.
Construction of the tower began in 1313 to the design of master mason Jan van Haelst, whose plans are still preserved in a museum. After continuing intermittently through wars, plagues and political turmoil, the work reached completion in 1380. It was near the end of this period that the gilded dragon, brought from Bruges, assumed its place atop the tower. The uppermost parts of the building have been rebuilt several times, in part to accommodate the growing number of bells.
The primary bell in the tower, Roland, was the one used by citizens to warn of an enemy approaching or a battle won. "Roland has become almost a person to the people of Belgium. He is a patriot, a hero, a leader in all rebellion against unrighteous authority." Upon conquering Belgium, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor ordered the removal of Roland. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow referred to Roland in one of his poems:

Sheep stable;

The city hall ( reads Sheep stable) is a construction of about 40 to 15 meters wide which is based on four concrete pedestals. The facades and roofs are clad in wood and features bring natural light through little holes. On roofs are glass tiles to protect the wood. Sitting in the base lifts, ventilation ducts, utilities for the underlying spaces and an open fireplace.

The city hall has two pointed roofs. This refers to the pointed roofs of the town hall. The altitude of the city hall ratio equivalent to the surrounding buildings.

Hi John,

is it city hall???? Are you sure it is not Prima Aprilis? I can't imagine anywhere the city hall like this, and so close to the Gothic church, spoiling the view. For me awful idea. This Sheep stable itself is interesting and beautiful but in other place. But the photo is excellent in all respects. Thanks for sharing.

Bonjour, cher ami John,

Buona giornata
Carlo

Hello John,

This is a curious mix of old and new.
I understand your reservations but the new building does make a strong statement!
Your photograph captures the two with excellent sharpness and fine positioning. I like how it is all so nicely illuminated by the low sun.

Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hello John,
really fascinating combination of two completely different objects. You write in your note you have quite mixed feelings seing this juxtaposition, but I find it really successful. The belfry is indeed beautiful with its ornamentations and grey stones, but the new City Hall is for me also very interesting when it comes to its architecture.Personally I like it!
You composed the scene excellently showing us both objects in all their glory.

Have a nice day
Krzysztof

Hello John

I can understand that people of Ghent are discussing the placement of this modern building so close to the old one. When it comes to the photo the modern building without doubt creates an interesting juxtaposition towards the old medieval tower. Technically well executed photo and lovely presentation. Very nice work! TFS. Have a great week.

Best regards, Erling

Hello John,
I know which building I prefer:-) Your chosen point of view nicely highlights the difference between these two starkly contrasting styles. The passers-by contribute to the atmosphere of the shot and offer a good sense of scale. Agreeable warm light and colours to match; excellent sharpness. Thanks for sharing.

Hi John,
Very fine composition from the center of Ghent. I was impressed by this new modern structure. Well taken.

Daniel

Ciao John
Romano

Hi John
a stunning shot this, such a contrast of architectural styles but they seem to fit together so harmoniously. Glorious textures and immaculate detailing make this shot a real winner. Beautifully captured and presented.

Have a great week - regards Brian.

Hello John,

Hello John,

A very interesting note, especially about "Roland", and a fine photograph with wonderful contrasts between the old and new architecture of Ghent.

Excellent "compact" composition, lovely light and colours and exquisite details and sharpness.

Beautiful!

Kind Regards,

John.

P.S. I think these are the lines of Longfellow:

"Till the bell of Ghent responded o'er lagoon and dike of sand,
I am Roland! I am Roland! there is victory in the land!"

Hi John,

The presence of the people has an effect of scale. The point of view is showing the détails and colours of the architecture of the Belfry and of the Sheep stable. The good luminosity is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.

Bonjour John,

Vele groeten, Paul

Hi John,

Excellent shot. Very well managed the colors, lights and contrast. Very well done.

Hello John,
These are interesting contrasts of architectural styles trying to live peacefully together. A city that has visibly grown thoughout the centuries with many styles seen side by side is often more interesting to visit than one where everything looks the same. You have balanced and cropped this photo very well and the colours and sharpness are as perfect as always.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi John,
Superb shot of this beautiful urban scene. That belfry is a staggeringly beautiful piece of architectre, and extremely impressive in its size! The stable, although a little smaller and less noticable, is equally a wonderful structure, and its wooden facade makes a nice contrast against the stone tower.
Really nicely seen image John, thanks for sharing this postcard from Ghent.
All the best
Noel

Hello John,
this is a really odd couple! Your composition and framing are great, you have emphasized their closeness and the juxtaposition of their totally different styles. What connects them is their tipped roofs, I guess, their differences are striking. The people in the foreground bring in some delightful movement. I like very much the way you've used the light, the colours and textures are very attractive. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Hi John, very good view of this interesting and beautiful composition with the modern and the old town, very well captured with a great pov, in this great and beautiful photography. Good afternoon and happy weekend.

Old and new together here in Ghent, John - a nice combination, with he beautiful clock tower looming over the more modern wood and concrete City Hall, at the very least an eye-catching building that I'm sure some of TE's modern architecture lovers will salivate over!

Really for me the light atop the tower is the most lovely piece of this, worthy of a close-up in its own right, as it illuminated the fine brickwork nicely. Overall a very nice shot of Ghent, old and new.

I like this mixture of traditional and modern architecture John. It somehow sits side by side with ease. If the sheep stable was constructed of stone would it look out of place next to the tower? It's a fine composition my friend, great clarity and colours and a fine contrast with the blue, cloud dotted sky.

The poem you're referring to is called, 'The Belfry of Bruges'. The part in which Roland appears is;

And again the whiskered Spaniard all the land with terror smote;
And again the wild alarum sounded from the tocsin's throat;

Till the bell of Ghent responded o'er lagoon and dike of sand,
"I am Roland! I am Roland! there is victory in the land!"

Hi John,
I love the combination of Old and Modern in the images of cities, and your image here is a fine representation of a very old beautiful historically significant stone tower and an abstract-looking two-point structure with something that looks like a (?)chimney. Sheep stable is a funny name for it and it looks very unusual. Such a picture-worthy image, quite striking in its uniqueness!
The belfry's roof is gorgeous and I love the perfect sharpness of even its littlest details.
Warm Regards,
Jenna

Dag John,

Smart choice of a vertical format for the composition to emphasise the height of the clocktower and the gated arch at left. Hello John,

You're capturing well this place by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see both of old and modern architecture in Ghent. The old medieval tower looks like elegant and noble architecture from it's design/shape, and new buillding looks like with innovative design. So it's very interesting in the contrast. The whole is balanced and harmonized well by a good arrangement and excellent bright color combination.

Hallo John!
I know this wonderful place without this strange architectural monster - and I loved it as it was. This "gadget" obviously shall be something like "provocative art" - for me it's a defacement of this square and I think that the city of Bruges really wasn't in need of this. Well, each to his own ...
In any case, your contribution is thought-provoking and interesting and I like the confrontation of the two buildings in your photo.

Hello John

I love the shapes of the buildings in the shot. That modern structure in front of the tower intriguing - I'd love to take photos of that with it's interesting shapes and textures. Well composed.

The city hall in modern architecture style in wood seems to stand out like a sore thumb in front of the belfry. You used a good POV to have both the buildings in the frame. Good light & fine details you captured...the clarity in the shot is a delight!

Hello, John
I love photos with a contrast in their theme, and the view of old and new structures is a perfect example of that. The towering belfry makes an excellent image by itself; it's a very striking piece of architecture. The "Sheep Stable" is also a very notable work of architecture, with its unique design and location. Putting them together in one photo was brilliant. My congratulations.
Thanks also for the excellent explanation about the buildings.

Goedemorgen John
This juxtaposition of the modern building to the historic bell tower, judiciously set off-center with strict verticals, is of greater interest because of the display of two noble construction materials that represent architectural techniques separated by many centuries!

Hi John,
the modern architecture of the City Hall have a strong graphical contrast with this gorgeous medieval belfry, while both elements stand out elegantly on the blue sky.
The vital atmosphere of people in the square adds a nice complement to your beautiful composition.
A good management of light and colors.
Friendly regards,
Josep

Bonjour mon cher ami John,

My friendly regards.

Daniel.

john

the contrast between the tower and the modern structure is impressive and I liked this angle you choose. excellent quality of image. sometimes this kind of contrast between new and old architecture isn't so good, some way the shapes of the modern structure matched well with the tower.

hugs

jorge

Hi John

Amazing combination of architecture. Great composition, another stunning shot from the master.

Chris

Hi John
I dont think the modern structures aesthetically blend in the environment. Photo wise, this looks luminous which i really appereciate in such brilliant light, vividness of colours and detail with lively people's interaction. The comp is spot on but I think the medieval tower outshines superbly there even though its rival appears to compete for equal attention. Great capture and TFS.
Kind regards

Hi John.
A fantastic composition ..... but I like modern construction, I do not like to be made as close to old buildings and emblematic, is certainly remarkable effect .... but for me too ....
As for your work flawless as ever.
Nice day which gives a wide range of colors.
Sensational is light and good sharpness.
Enjoy the weekend.
All the best.
Luis.

Hi John,

you have captured very nice the contrasts of old and new. A great image with interesting details and very good picture quality.

An interesting picture, which raises the question of which is better, old or new? Anyway, in this case I find old much nicer than new.

Have a great weekend

Peter

hi john. great photo showing today's ghent. good light and clarity. i like modern art or architecture when it is shown in its right place but when it tries to compete with the old original beauty, it becomes too ambitious and distracting, imho. that structure, somehow spoils the originality of the place.

namaste John,
those twin architectures are just beautiful and they are creating nice contrasting coexistence. Excellent image quality. Sharp detail and perfect light. Superb shot. Tfs.

Hi John,
well chosen the vertical format with the modern construction to be almost the 'shade' of the old bell tower.Excellent the light and the colour management with the balance of the scene to be unique.Well done.

Regards,Danos

Hello John,

Your photography note was interesting and informative also, the picture was well combination of old and modern but its old architectural beauty as well as construction was excellent, shot it in a vertical format with great sharpness and warm color contrast, I like your presentation.

Hello John
Contrasting structures under such a bright sky. Ancient and modern coexisting harmoniously. People gives scale of course, colors are sober and both subjects are interesting.

Thanks for sharing
