History;
Donald Coleman Bailey

Born on 15 September 1901 in Rotherham, England, UK - Died on May 05, 1985 Bournemouth, Hampshire, UK

The Bailey bridge is named after Sir Donald Coleman Bailey (1901-1985) that the system easy to assemble temporary bridge designed in 1940. One year after the British engineer the first sketches on paper, why the first army vehicles on his invention.
The first bailey bridge built in Europe on 8 to 9 June 1944 in France at the height of the castle of Benouville. The bailey bridge used in WW II was designed so that these bridges were built, dismantled or moved in a few hours, even under enemy fire
The Bailey Bridge was a British-designed portable pre-fabricated truss bridge, designed for use by military engineering units to bridge gaps up to 220 feet wide. The bridges were introduced into service in 1942 and first used by Allied units in combat during the Second World War. The design was unique in that:
- Construction required no special tools or heavy equipment.
- Bridge components were small enough to be carried in trucks and even man portable over short distances.
- The bridge was strong enough to bear the weight of vehicles up to 70 tons.

John
Très belle atmosphère dans cette photo remarquablement composée. Très beau rendu de la brume et des couleurs douces de la scène.
J'aurais peut-être coupé un peu le haut de l'image pour supprimer les petits bouts de câble électrique?

Hello John,

A very interesting note about these prefabricated, sectional Bailey bridges which played such an important rôle in the Second World War for the transportation of infantry, artillery and vehicles. And a very fine photograph with which to illustrate it.

The morning mist or fog is what really makes this such a wonderful picture. as well as the lone cyclist disappearing into the mist with the soft silhouettes of the distant trees making a lovely background. The composition is excellent and we can also see fine details of the parapets of the bridge perfectly.

Lovely soft colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

Excellent!

Kind Regards,

John.

Hello John,
The haze does wonderful things to this composition, hiding enough of the trees to create an attractive, slightly mystic atmosphere. The green railings give the picture excellent depth and the man on the bike is a fine detail.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hallo John,

Vriendelijke groeten,
Robert

Hi John
a shot that has a real nostalgic feel about it and is full of atmosphere. Amazing to think this bridge is still in use today. Thought provoking and effectively composed and presented.

Hello John,
It is good to see these bridges put to a peaceful use. An image that beautifully evokes a cold and misty winter's day. The man on his moto is very well included, bringing the scene to life and giving the image depth.

Hi John,

The length of the bridge is giving depth to the composition. The presence of the cyclist is giving life to the scene. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the bridge. The is giving a special atmosphere to the picture. Have a nice day.

Pierre

Hello John,

Excellent early misty morning shot... you managed to capture the cyclist perfectly...
I have to congratulate you on your very interesting & lengthy notes.
Well done.

Kindest regards,
Dawn.

Hello John

Well you may be too poor to visit London but you are rich in talent and creativity as this image clearly shows. I like the way the exposure remains so accurate throughout the depth of the image given the light conditions. Most cameras metering systems would not capture this shot as well as this. Compostionally you have created depth with the lines of the bridge and a focal point of interest with the subject of the man on the bicycle. The trees in the mist provide a great background. Very well done and a good moment captured.

Hello John,

The cyclist adds to this composition. The straight line of the bridge creates deepness as the fog creates a natural blurred background. I like the mood of this well done image.

Hi John,
Very nice leading perspective you caught here, and as you say, the fog lends a great light and atmosphere to the shot. How strange to think back to those who walked thsi bridge in this weather under totally different circumstances.
All the best

Bonjour John

Une belle photo de brume qui côtoie celle de Nicou de belle façon.J'aime l'effet entonnoir qui donne de la profondeur à l'ensemble. Le cycliste ajoute une belle dimension humaine au tout.

Hi John,
The cyclist is disappearing into the mist, he must have a very pleasant trip here. There is indeed a very peaceful and calm mood here. The bridge is nicely positioned in the picture and the colours are all soft and subdued, except maybe the little red mark on the bridge.
Kind regards

Hello John,

We have been having a lot of misty mornings, too. I have taken some shots in the Lake District, which I will share later.
I like how your viewpoint attracts our attention, via the converging lines of the bridge, to the focal cyclist. The depth is emphasised as we move from the clarity of the f/g to the misty chill of the b/g.

Sylvain

Hello John,
a lovely simple composition to show the effect of the heavy mist over the historic bridge. Although the only person around is the cyclist, your note evokes and projects on the mist images of the soldiers working on the bridge. I like very much the depth and perspective and the background filled with the tall tree trunks. I also love how the cyclist is moving away from the vantage point into the mist where colours fade and the landscape becomes shadowy. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely Friday,
Ourania

Hi dear John

You present the best framewrok and percet composition via getting perefct timing of bycycle rider as usual.
Fog is very very important actor in this image. Thanks for your sharing and have a good last working day!

Takero from cold Tokyo

Hi John
This is pretty sight with the background that diffuses almost to nothing on this foggy morning rendering a special effect with the biker and speck of bright vivid red as effective points of reference to the shot. But even with the fog you still have got great dof registered more acceptably in focus. It's fabulous as fog is not the easiest thing to shoot well, but you managed it here. You gave got some great lead in lines to work with here guiding the eyes into the distance. The biker further adds the feel of distance and depth. I like the moody atmosphere here and the whole feeling of the picture. Great shot with your study hands and certainly worth the effort. Delightful shot :))
Have a great day.
Warm regards

Hello John,

You're capturing well this place by a good composition and fine tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the bridge with important role during WAR II and the foggy image as you note. It's impressive in wood with tree's row in behind, too. And, it draws iut a good effect in this image for the man who crosses a bridge by motorbike.

Hi John,

A real beauty here, John - I have to start going out in foggy conditions more often because they often produce such wonderful shots. You've framed this one beautifully, with the bridge as a guide and the man on his bicycle as a subject; despite his being perfectly centered, he still has dynamic movement because the lines of the bridge are sweeping toward him like this. Then, of course, the misted forest looms behind him - probably not imposing in real light, but with the fog it has an air of mystery to it. Excellent light management and opportunism to get this shot at such a great moment!

Hi John
A good grasp of the bridge and cyclist who faces the foggy weather. Good depth of an image well thought out. i love foggy day .

Hi John

I haven`t got much time for TE lately, but I hope it will change in the coming weeks. The fog creates a great atmosphere here. The paralelle lines of the bridge leads nicely towards the forest. The man riding his bike into the fog is a nice addition. Beautiful work, my friend:) Enjoy your Sunday.

Greetings from Bergen, Erling

Hello John,
Very unique and beautiful shot of this interesting morning scene. Taken with a perfect sense of depth so the view looks extremely interesting. Well done.

A very atmospheric image my friend. We can only imagine what it must have been like for the soldiers fighting for this structure. I like the cyclist at the far end and also behind him the lines of trees, which serve to increase the atmosphere. This is a place I would like to visit.....

Fabulous photo, dear John.

The cyclist disappearing into the fog, with a complementary note. The photo is first rate, no surprise, coming from you. The note is highly informative and engaging.

I would love to have a comment from Belgium. I will make any correction to the English, if any is required. Or just write in Flemish.

Hello John

another fine display of the way you master these repetitive perspectives and those moody foggy atmosphere. The delicacy of the tones, the attitude of the biker have a timeless flavor.
Bravo,

Emmanuel

Hi John,

Brilliant representation of the mystic atmosphere. The cycle rider adds life to the image. Superb. Just liked it.

Hi John. Intriguing mood created by the fog and solitary cyclist. As usual, great sense of depth and space. Excellent true to life colours. Best wishes. Klaudio.

Hello John,

Practicing a lot bycicle I am always interesting by shots showing it, as on this one.
As usual from you, a strong use of the perspective. The rendering of the 3rd dimension is here helped by the fog making slowly disapearing the background, which is although still there through the silhouettes of the naked trees.

Yves.

Hello John.
This is a dream of a shot for someone who cycle everyday like me, and maybe you too :-)
The colors at the beginning of the bridge is amazing and slowly fades in to the mist. A dreamy feel with mysterious feeling that I like.
Thanks and have a great weekend.

Hi John,
In one word, exquisite! Nice perspective, effective leading lines, good light and color management, good timing and the mist adds mystery to the scene. Masterfully done! TFS.

Hi John

Mysterious shot of fog the road to nowhere. Excellent POV and fine DOF, this pictures speaks for itself. Well done

Sorry John I have to disappoint you, what you identified in my shot from Vientiane as souvenirs are gifts for the monks.

Warm regards
Urs

Hi John,

you've captured this autumn mood convincingly. It looks dark and melancholic in this fog. But often in such weather the sun breaks the through the mist after a while and creates a beautifully soft light in the landscape.

I love the autumn and I like this picture.

All the best

Peter

Bonjour;)

namaste John,
here is a lovely view with the Bailey Bridge and the biker on it. Great to see the scene with such dramatic background. I love the misty atmosphere and the haze in background. Another superb one from your archive. Tfs.

Hi John.
Just my taste: center axis, interesting light and a very "rich" atmosphere that activates the fantasy, associations and feelings.
Just great.
