A roman bridge, Vaison-la-Romaine

One view. Downstream.
Another view. Downstream.

Upstream, the roman bridge in Vaison-la-Romaine built in the 1st century AD. Registered historical monument since 1840.

With 2000 years old, it is still used as a road bridge to cross the Ouvèze. The barrel vault of 17 feet in span and 9 meters wide consists of five arches juxtaposed. It connects the modern lower town to the medieval upper town.

On 22 September 1992 the bridge withstood an exceptional flood of the OUVÈZE that devastated the valley and killed 37 people, with storms during which fell to 300 millimeters of rain in 4 hours.

VAISON-LA-ROMAINE is a French commune, located in the Vaucluse department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur area, populated by 6153 Vaisonnais in 2009, spread over 27 square kilometers, or 227.8 inhabitants per km².

Vaison la Romaine is in the historical region of Comtat Venaissin, and a few kilometers from Dentelles de Montmirail in the massif des Baronnies.

Bonjour Joel,

Youe shot and w/s give us a really good impression of this bridge and its location. Isn't it amazing that it is still serviceable after so many years. We have a lot to thank the Romans for!
This shot has wonderful clarity. The textures are beautifully captured. I like the gentle lead from the left and the wonderful impact of the arched, stone bridge. It is all very well composed.
Wouldn't you just love to have cocktails under that red umbrella. What a view!!

Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hello Joël,
A most attractive village Vaison-la-Romaine, though often plagued by tourists:-) I don't think I have seen the bridge from this angle before. The shot is well composed and has good depth. The threatening and rather dramatic sky lends a particular atmosphere to the shot.

Hi Joel,
a beautiful photo of this picturesque place with romantic details, the composition is superb and the attractive clouds adds a lot to the atmosphere, great view, Tfs! Have a nice week! Kellemes hetet kívánok!
György

Bonjour Joel

Bonjour Joel,
Perfect POV on the ancient arch-bridge, Roman's built and connect two sides of town across.
The forest seen under the bridge gave a fabulous verdant decoration, grey clouds aloft as well.
Au revoir
Ike

Pierre

Hi Joel

Wow, that's a fantastic shot of this ancient bridge. A place I must visit one day. Excellent composition and exposure. One of your best shots in my opinion.

best wishes
Chris

Hello Joel,
A splendid old painting with beautiful colour and a warm feeling. Excellent of quality through the perspective along the river together with the through look under the bridge. The sky is just stunning.
Have a nice evening,
Regards,
Mari

Bonjour Joel,

Amicalement

Serge

Hello Joel,
Very impressive and beautiful architecture of this old bridge that is hard to believe how old it is. This is amazing. Perfectly executed with fabulous POV and DOF also perfect. I like this pic. Great job. Thank you.
All the best,
Barbara

Bonjour Joel.

Sylvain

Hello Joel,
What a magnificent place, I really like this view, you captured a splendid place with a great quality and perfect details, congratulations and TFS.
Best regards
Giorgio

Hi dear JOel

Impressive shot indeed.
Freamwork and composition are so matured as usual as you. I think this is the result of your deep consideration. Best match of exposure and shutter speed. The sky with so much clouds is very attractive. Thanks for your sharing with finest work and have a good day!

Hello Joël,
This elegant Roman bridge is the main and most attractive element of your composition, giving more sense of history to the architecture around it. In addition it is a very good framing the river perspective, woods and mountains in the background. Excellently composed and masterfully captured!
Best regards,
Sergiy

Nicou

hi joel,
this is a fantastic composition. your low viewpoint really emphasises the scale of the bridge. the glimpse of the hills visible from underneath the bridge is wonderful and helps put the scene in context. lovely buildings helping to frame the picture. excellent depth of field and sharpness.
regards,
brian

Hi Joel
looking through your gallery, how could i possibly not view this photo of yours!
so charming, so rich. having the extra large cloud coverage is awesome.

Hi Joel,

This setting reminds me of the famous Mostar bridge in Bosnia. You are fortunate to have such wonderful historic relics in your country to enjoy. I like how the mountains in the background are set just below the arch. The greenery at left helps to break up the facades of the buildings and the texture of the clouds is another important element in this composition. Great work.

Amicalement,
