During a sort stroll in the narrow alleys of Andros capital Xora,i saw and this characteristic chapel that is found on the rock, near the sea.
Have a good weekend.

History

The island in ancient times contained an Ionian population, perhaps with an admixture of Thracian blood. Though originally dependent on Eretria, by the 7th century BC it had become sufficiently prosperous to send out several colonies, to Chalcidice (Acanthus, Stageira, Argilus, Sane). The ruins of Palaeopolis, the ancient capital, are on the west coast; the town possessed a famous temple, dedicated to Dionysus. In 480 BC, it supplied ships to Xerxes and was subsequently harried by the Greek fleet. Though enrolled in the Delian League it remained disaffected towards Athens, and in 477 had to be coerced by the establishment of a cleruchy on the island nevertheless, in 411 Andros proclaimed its freedom, and in 408 withstood an Athenian attack. As a member of the second Delian League it was again controlled by a garrison and an archon. In the Hellenistic period, Andros was contended for as a frontier-post by the two naval powers of the Aegean Sea, Macedon and Ptolemaic Egypt. In 333, it received a Macedonian garrison from Antipater in 308 it was freed by Ptolemy I of Egypt. In the Chremonidean War (266-263) it passed again to Macedon after a battle fought off its shores. In 200, it was captured by a combined Roman, Pergamene and Rhodian fleet, and remained a possession of Kingdom of Pergamon until the dissolution of that kingdom in 133 BC. Before falling under Turkish rule, Andros was from AD 1207 till 1566 governed by the families Zeno and Sommariva under Venetian protection. After a few centuries, Cyclades joined the rest of Greece in 1821.

On May 10, 1821, Theophilos Kairis, one of the leading intellectuals of the Greek Revolution, declared the War of Independence by raising the Greek flag at the picturesque cliffside church of St George: at this time, a famous heartfelt speech, or "rhetoras", inspired shipowners and merchants to contribute funds to build a Greek Navy to combat the Ottomans.

Hi dear Danos,
I like those "tiny" chapela built on rocks and hill tops at seasides, mainly for the use of sailors. This one is also a typical sample for this künd of usage.
Very good and usefull notes as well.

The staircase is sending my eyes toward the door which is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the architecture of the chapel. There is a good contrast netween the colors of the door and the colors of the walls. Have a nice day.

Hello Danos,

You're capturing well this small and lovely chapel bu a good composition and excellent tone, so it's impressive and interesting to see the chapel with white wall, blue door and ewd roof and it's standing on the rock. It's really one of architecture typical greek style. The stairs that run to chapel draws out a additional good effect, I think.

Regards,
mikio

Ciao Danos,
image of great value, wonderful colors and excellent post production work, congratulations.

Hello Danos,

Thank you for your very generous review.
In a decisive framing of this small chapel, I feel your presence. The stair begins right at the lower right-hand corner leads us ever so naturally up to the the blue main entrance of this chapel. The diagonal lines of this stirs are so strong that as if this white stair alone is connecting the sky and the ground. The ground being the foundation of the chapel a part in the natural rocks and and other parts constructed by man. And the white chapel with its terracotta roof tiles seem to belong to the sky, the color of the sky in the background confirms my observation. So, overall, this tightly cropped particular framing also suggest that the main focus of this photo seem to be a vertical relationship of the sky and the earth. Given these circumstances, the framing of this photo must be vertical. You have all very carefully thought out the overall composition. The photo has a very strong message. It is a very impressive display of your capacity to compose a simple subject and at the same time, suggest a larger topic to go with the image.

With my at most compliments,
Very best regards,
Nobu.

Hello Danos,

Hi Danos,
the strong contrast, the textures of the elements and the magnificent colors, they make us think about a HDR, because of the great graphical power that offers us your photo.
I like the slight low-angle shot, that heightens the beauty of the simple architecture of this white chapel, on an impressive sky, and the perspective of the stairs.
The composition is very elegant and attractive.
Well done, my friend.

namaste Danos,

Hello Danos,

Hello Danos.
Impressive use of the rock to build the chapel on her, they earn a nice perspective and a greater emphasis.
A very attractive composition with a great range of colors and high image quality for displaying the textures of the rocks appear to have relief.

Geia sou Danos
The chapel appears in full flory, so perched on top of stairway by the sea, and I imagine the sound of the hung bell tinkling randomly by stormy weather at night for manifesting the presence of this introspection building!

Bonjour Danos,

Le regard suit naturellement le petit sentier dans l'image ce qui lui donne une belle profondeur. La contre plongée donne une belle ampleur à la petite chapelle qui ressort très bien sur fond de ciel gris.

Kalimera Danos,
Your framing places the chapel nicely against the excellent detail of the cloudy sky while the stairway leads the eye into the chapel. Excellent sharpness and light management add the the enjoyment of the composition. Still your note is almost better that the photo as you tell the importance of this place in Greek history.

Speaking of history, I wonder what you think of this article?

It's nice to hear from you, I've missed TE but the last six months have been a real challenge. However, things are looking up now.
ευμένος σας την υγεία, την αγάπη και τη χαρά, Pat

Very lovely close up view of this deserving chapel. the stairs perfectly in diagonal create a very good perspective and the stone walls offer fine textures which contrast with the white of the chapel. Nice vertical framing, an interesting sky and an enviable sharpness make the image enjoyable.

Compliments and best greetings,

I like those twilight colors, and the sharpness of the particulars: the stones, the roof, the bell; the angle of the stairs gives verticality and drives beyond the chapel, to the sky. Great shot.

Hi Danos,
Only in Greece can we find chapels in the most varied and original places !
Here, I like the contrast between the straight, neat lines of the pavement, stairs , wall and chapel, and the natural roughness of the rock on which it stands.
Luckily, the Mediterranean doesn't have high tides ! In other parts of the world, it would probably be in danger of flooding even at that height.
Thanks for this original postcard.
Kindest regards.

Καλησπέρα Δάνο,

Hello Danos,

Very tidy shot of this old church and the history of the place are truly remarkable. There is something very special about this blue and white combination that most of the architecture from Greece seem to follow.Greeks may not be that honoured in todays world but the world knows their history and its true had they not been at the top in BC eras, then, probably we would still have been somewhere in medieval times today .In India we still have a school of medicine known as YUNANI (or Greek)practised widely and very much parallel with the indigenous Ayurveda.TFS.
