The menhir of Serre de Gleyzo, Blandas

One view.
Other view.

The menhir of Serre de Gleyzo, on the CAUSSE de BLANDAS, 150 m from the dolmen de Planas, 2.40 m height, in limestone as all the megaliths of the limestone plateau of Blandas.

Among the mégalithes du CAUSSE DE BLANDAS, we count 25 dolmens, 55 menhirs, and also several badly preserved cromlechs. In 2009, speleologists discovered a cave remained closed during 5000 years and packaging of skulls and potteries.

_The CAUSSE DE BLANDAS is located in Languedoc-Roussillon in the department of Gard, is bordered in north by the valley of Arre river and the solid mass of the Cévennes, in the south by the valley of the VIS RIVER and CAUSSE du LARZAC. Its surface is of approximately 80 km², its altitude varies from 540 meters to 955 meters. It belongs to small causses, in opposition to GRANDS CAUSSES, large causses. One finds on causse of Blandas many megaliths: cromlechs, menhirs, and dolmens.

_The CAUSSE du LARZAC is vastest and southernmost of "GRANDS CAUSSES", large causses. Its 1000 km ² of plateau rise from 600 to 900 meters. It is limited to the North-East by Dourbie river which separates it from "Causse Noir", in the North-West the Tarn river separates it from the plateau of Lévézou, in the west it stops with the depression of Roquefort. Its surface is strewn with famous sites with the military orders, Knights of the Order of the Temple and Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.

_The GRANDS CAUSSES, in the south of the Massif Central, are delimited in north by the plateau of "Aubrac", in the east by the Cévennes, the south by the plain of the "lodévois", in the west by the plateau of "Lévézou". These are plateaus limestones whose altitude varies from 700 to 1250 meters of altitude, and of surface going up to 1000 km².
The "Grands Causses" are formed by important "Causses of Larzac" (1000 km²), of "Sauveterre" (550 km²), "Méjean" (330 km²), and "Noir" (200 km²), but also of the causses "Comtal", "Rouge" and of "Sévérac", and many small peripheral causses like causses of "Mende", "Blandas", "Changefèges", "Bégon", etc… No waterway circulates on the surface of the plates, because the rainwater infiltrates in the karstic, generating networks of many swallow-holes and caves, to re-appear in the valleys. Geology of causses and the cévennes.

_ The VIS RIVER is a small river, abundant but very irregular. Supplied with its catchment area, its RISINGS can be extremely important. November 8, 1982, the maximum instantaneous flow was 542 m³, five hundred and forty two m³, a second, in Saint-Laurent-le-Minier for a rising hardly of a decennial nature, banal and by no means exceptional.
Tributary of Herault, a 30 km length. It takes its source on the Saint-Guiral mount in the solid mass of Aigoual. It disappears in the ground with Larcy whereas its flow reaches 50 l/s. Approximately 15 km further, it goes on surface in a RÉSURGENCE with Vissec, with the mill of Lafoux with a flow of 1200 to 2500 l/s. Its affluents are in major undergrounds part. the Vis erodes the basement, provocative constantly underground crumblings able to stop its course of the hours, even days, as in 1779, 1890, 1927 and 1961. Its exploration, appears difficult and dangerous in a water with 11° and a very strong current. The Vis then impressed its bed of surface in impressive CANYONS reaching 300 m of depth dug in plates limestones called causses, of which the Causse of Larzac, crossing the imposing site of the Circus of Navacelles. It follows its TORRENTIAL COURSE giving its energy to an electric micro-power station in Madières, and its purity with some pisciculture with trouts of quality, then is thrown in Herault in Ganges.
The freshness and the purity of the Vis river are appraisals, close to its CLASSIFIED FALLS.

BLANDAS is a French commune, located in the department of Gard of the Languedoc-Roussillon area, populated of 131 Blandassiens in 2008, distributed out of 37.5 km², that is to say 3.5 hab/km².

Hello Joël,
A fine composition featuring this standing stone, which is nicely balanced by the surrounding shrubs with their little yellow flowers. Colours are attractive and natural; clarity is very good.

Bonjour Joel,

Roger

Great note. Interesting place and megalith. Good composition with the yellow bush in the foreground.

Chris

Hi Joël,
A very interesting note to this fine picture. The big stone (looking like a runestone) is expertly placed in your composition and the yellow Genista is adding a fine accent. A very beautiful background view!
Kind regards
Gunnar

Bonsoir Joël

Ciao Joel
questa disposizione geometrica tra il menhir e le ginestre è forte e magica. E' un dialogo muto ma i tre comunicano e si sostengono l'uno con l'altro, due hanno i colori, l'altro la saggezza e la memoria. Foto simbolica e molto narrativa, mi piace molto.
buona fine di serata
amicalement :-)

Bonjour Joel,

I appreciate very much a very informative note. This megalith is well presented with its surrounding. The image has a very natural color. I appreciate it very much. Small yellow flowers in both foreground and in the background are very nice addition to the image. Well observed and carefully framed photograph.

Best regards,
Nobu.

Hello Joël,

Your picture are sometimes simple, but extraordinarily lovely for look at.
I can enjoy, exactly or I walk there in the meadow, with the big stone beside, and enjoy of the background.
Nice composition, soft colors, good presentation too.
Very well done, TFS.

Greetings,
John.

Bonsoir Joel,

Note très instructive.

Laurent
