The Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) is a large Old World vulture in the bird of prey family Accipitridae.

The Griffon Vulture is 93–110 cm (37–43 in) long with a 230–280 cm (91–111 in) wingspan, and it weighs between 6 and 13 kg (13.2 and 29 lb). Hatched naked, it is a typical Old World vulture in appearance, with a very white bald head, very broad wings and short tail feathers. It has a white neck ruff and yellow bill. The buff body and wing coverts contrast with the dark flight feathers.

Like other vultures, it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals which it finds by soaring over open areas, often moving in flocks. It grunts and hisses at roosts or when feeding on carrion.

Little is known about the average life-span of these birds. It is approximated at 50 to 70 years in the wild, but the oldest death recorded in captivity is 118 years old.

It breeds on crags in mountains in southern Europe, north Africa, and Asia, laying one egg. Griffon Vultures may form loose colonies. The population is mostly resident.

Hi Paulo
A tremendously well captured portrait of this bird, a real charmer and so needed in many parts of the world. The detail is wonderful as is the composition. This magnificent bird of prey is not the prettiest bird but full of character and a true master of the skies. A great pose here, love the incredible detail in the plumage, so sharp in great colors and the dark background creates a stark contrast superbly. Excellent shot of a beautiful bird! Congrats
Best regards

Ola Paulo,
the view of the Griffon Vulture is well captured as is sitting on the rail.I like the close up view as the quality of the image.

Have a good day,Danos

Well done.

Hello Paulo,

I am a very great fan of the Zoo, every year I bring a visit at the Zoo, always a very pleasant day.
Splendid how you shows these big Griffon Vulture.
What a nice sharp and clear image.
Very well done, TFS.

Have a nice weekend,

Hi Paulo. A vulture. This bird is a beauty. Nowhere to get so close to a vulture as the zoo. Your bird study is successful. The informative text like it very much. A good photographic contribution. Rgds, wolfgang.

Hola Paulo,

magnifica foto de este imponente animal, los detalles de la imagen son excelentes, me gusta tambien la luz con esa zona mas luminosa, bien visto,

Un abrazo,

My God!
Until I read the end of your note I could not understand how it was possible to have a griffon quietly sitting in a terrace rail!
We have griffon in Sardinia but they live on top of high mountains in wild places far from towns. Therefore It's so unusual to see one of them like in this photo of yours!
Does it not fly away? Or is it tied to a chain?

The photo is really so fine with the rail giving a very good sense of depth and the bird in diagonal (and what an expression!). Great DOF and definition and I like the strong saturated colours.

A very original photo.

Hi Paulo

What a surprise, there is a vulture, I did not expect to see this bird in Europe. Very sharp and precise shot. Most probably you had not a lot of time, so you had to be fast. Excellent vulture portrait, I like it. Well done.

Warm regards
