The royal emblem, Blois

One view. The salamander of François Ier on the chimneys of the captains of the guard room.
Other view. François Ier in a reproduction of a bust of the 16th century.

The SALAMANDER, the royal emblem of François Ier, photographed in the courtyard of the château de Blois, the RENAISSANCE WING constructed from 1515 to 1519 according to the will of King François Ier, between the CLASSIC WING of the 17th century and the MEDIEVAL GREAT HALL of the 13th century. The salamander is found in other buildings, such as chateau of Chambord and chateau of Fontainebleau.

The salamander symbolizes the power over fire, and by extension on men and the world. Linked to this symbol, motto of François Ier was "Nutrisco & extinguo", "Je m’en nourris et je l’éteins", "I nourish and extinguish".

Other occupants of the chateau of Blois have also left their emblems engraved:
The porcupine of Louis XII, whose motto was "Qui s'y frotte s'y pique", "watch out, you might get burned".
The three crowns of Henry III, whose motto was "Manet ultima caelo", "La dernière se trouve au ciel", "The latter is in heaven".

The château de Blois was for over a century the favorite residence of the kings of France. It brings together architecture, the Middle Ages to the 17th century: medieval architecture of the great hall of the palace the 13th century of COUNTS OF BLOIS, flamboyant Gothic architecture of the wing builded from 1498 to 1503 by LOUIS XII, 1462-1515, Renaissance architecture wing built from 1515 to 1519 by FRANÇOIS Ier, 1494-1547, classical architecture wing built from 1635 to 1638 for the Duke GASTON D'ORLÉANS, 1608-1660, by architect François Mansart, 1598-1666.

Blois is a French commune, located in the departement of Loir-et-Cher in the Centre region, populated by 50 704 Blois in 2007, spread across 37.5 km², or 1353.6 inhabitants per km².

Blois appears for the first time in 410.

Hello Joël,
A very fine close-up on this sculptured coat of arms. The composition is perfectly framed and has very good colours and sharpness. Thanks also for the informative note. Bon weekend.

roger

Hi Joel,
Great close-up of this interesting wall's decoration. Like your composition, light management, texture presentation. Well done. TFS.
Best, Malgorzata

Bonjour Joel,

New York.

Chaud comme feu, et tremble dent à dent ;
En mon pays suis en terre lointaine ;
Lez un brasier frissonne tout ardent ;
Nu comme un ver, vêtu en président,
Je ris en pleurs et attends sans espoir ;
Confort reprends en triste désespoir ;
Je m'éjouis et n'ai plaisir aucun ;

Hi Joel,
an attractive photo with beautiful details and excellent note, superb lights and clarity, Tfs! Have a nice weekend!

Amicalement
Jacques
