Cistercian architecture, Sylvanès

One view.
Other view.

The abbey church of 12th century, very large, and equipped with a CISTERCIAN flat bedside, is surprising by its dimensions. One can still see there, part of the cloister, the sacristy and the chapter house, arched 15th century. The Cistercian abbeys are characterized by an architecture and an ornamentation without ornaments.

Founded in 1136 per Pons de Léras, small lord of Larzac, repented outlaw, and built from 1151, during one century. Modified in 1477, transformed into sheep-fold and quarry stone to the French revolution, it was classified historic building, and was restored from 1975.

The ORDER of CISTERCIANS, is a Christian monastic reformed ORDER of the BENEDICTINES, whose origin goes back to the foundation of the Cîteaux abbey by Robert de Molesme, 1028-1111, in 1098.

The ORDER OF the BENEDICTINES, was founded into 529 per saint-Benoît de Nursie, (480/490-547), son of a noble Roman. RULE of SAINT BENEDICT describes the methods of clothing and daily life of the monks, and also the principal activities made of the liturgical office or joint prayer, the reading of the bible, and work intended to create autarky and to thus limit the external contacts. A life of obedience, humility, in search of God.

The CISTERCIAN RULE is the Rule of Saint Benedict applied with rigor. The Community life of the brothers is demanding in obedience with the Abbot of the monastery, in integral poverty, manual work, insulation, silence.

The Sylvanès abbey is the 3rd tourist site of Aveyron, after the "Caves de Roquefort", cellars of Roquefort and La Couvertoirade. It is today an arts center and the seat of an international center of sacred art, supported by acoustics of the church, particularly adapted to the song.

SYLVANÈS is a french commune, located in the department of Aveyron of the Midi-Pyrenees area, populated of 103 Sylvanésiens in 2007, distributed out of 17 km², that is to say 6 hab./km².

_ It exists on the territory of the commune a church Russian orthodox, the church of Étimasis built in 1993-1994 in the forest of Khirov with 700 km east of Moscow, then dismounted and conveyed with Sylvanès.

The commune is crossed by the DOURDOU river, known as "Dourdou de Camarès", and is a Commune of the ROUGIER of Camarès., in the Parc naturel régional des Grands Causses.

_ The DOURDOU, known as "Dourdou de Camarès", takes its source at 1050 meters of altitude, in the mounts of Carroux and Espinouze, in Castanet-le-Haut, in the department of Hérault, it passes in Aveyron, before throwing in the TARN, on its left bank, in Broquiès in the department of the Tarn, after a course of 87 km² and the crossing of a catchment area of 658 km². Its flow can pass from a minimal flow of 1.5 m³/s to a maximum flow of 650 m³/s.Description.

Ah the Cistercians Joel!
They've left some remarkable buildings - all very fascinating. The couple I've visited have been amazing.
A good photo of this one, well composed and your usual good colour.
cheers
Ian

Joel,
This is a nicely composed shot with the trees adding framing the scene. The angle of the shot works well giving the shot a sense of direction. The lighting and colors are great and the photo has fine sharpness.
TFS,
Asa

Bonjour Joël,
I like the point of view with the framing tree on the right creating a good sense of depth and the angle of the two walls a sense of dynamism. A lovely contrast is to be had between the creeper covered walls of the dependencies and the grey stones of the massive abbey. Good colours and clarity.

Amicalement,
Charo

Bonsoir Joel, This looks like a combination of aging but well maintained structures with the intention to have them there forever. The vines and the vegetation give a nice facade for the buildings in the center here. Great notes as always and excellent composition. Regards, Roger

Joël
Architecture très cistercienne (donc austère) pour cette petite abbaye. Le premier plan (en particulier l'ombre) est peut-être un peu trop envahissant mais la qualité de l'image est très bonne. J'aime bien "l'autre vue"
Amicalement
JJ
