My TE-meetings in Lisbon continue. Today we were in Sintra. The view of the Pena Palace was fabulous.

The palace's history started in the Middle Ages when a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena was built on the top of the hill above Sintra. According to tradition, the construction occurred after an apparition of the Virgin Mary. In 1493, King John II, accompanied by his wife Queen Leonor, made a pilgrimage to the site to fulfill a vow. His successor, King Manuel I, was also very fond of this sanctuary, and ordered the construction there of a monastery which was donated to the Order of Saint Jerome. For centuries Pena was a small, quiet place for meditation, housing a maximum of eighteen monks.

In the 18th century the monastery was severely damaged by lightning. However, it was the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755, occurring shortly afterwards, that took the heaviest toll on the monastery, reducing it to ruins. Nonetheless, the chapel (and its magnificent works of marble and alabaster attributed to Nicolau Chanterene) escaped without significant damage.

For many decades the ruins remained untouched, but they still astonished young prince Ferdinand. In 1838, as King consort Ferdinand II, he decided to acquire the old monastery, all of the surrounding lands, the nearby Castle of the Moors and a few other estates in the area. King Ferdinand then set out to transform the remains of the monastery into a palace that would serve as a summer residence for the Portuguese royal family. The construction took place between 1842-1854, although it was almost completed in 1847:
After the death of Ferdinand the palace passed into the possession of his second wife Elisa Hensler, Countess of Edla. The latter then sold the palace to King Luís, who wanted to retrieve it for the royal family, and thereafter the palace was frequently used by the family. In 1889 it was purchased by the Portuguese State, and after the Republican Revolution of 1910 it was classified as a national monument and transformed into a museum. The last queen of Portugal, Queen Amélia, spent her last night at the palace before leaving the country in exile.

The palace quickly drew visitors and became one of Portugal's most visited monuments.
In 1995, the palace and the rest of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra were classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

See WS - Aires looks for the new interesting POVs.

Hello Malgorzata, This is a very impressive scene of this building. Wonderful colors. Earth brown and red seem to dominate here. The ornamentation is excellent. The condition of a building, as old as this, is truly outstanding. A real surfing the gallery stopper. I think it is very good. Regards, Roger

Malgorzata

Choć nieco kiczowaty, przypomina nam lata dzieciństwa i bajki o wróżkach i królewnach, nieprawdaż ? . Wspaniałe kolory i super osrtość.
Pozdrawiam
Józek

Wonderful image of the castle.Amazing colors and excellent light management.Very well framed and composed,

Um abraço,

Hello Malgorzata,
A splendid view in vivid fresh colours and good play of light and shadows.
The photo would have gained in my opinion by correcting the distortions that are just a littl too much visible.
Regards,
Paul

Fabulous is really the right word for this photo!
so fine the palace but also so fine the light and colours. It looks like a sight of one thousands and one night... and you even found a very interesting sky as the ideal background. Excellent sharpness and contrast, a very alive and incisive photo.
Brava!

Hello Emka,
Fabulous Sintra, and a photo with fabulous colours and contrasts. A good POV taking in a large part of he castle and many architectural details, and a very careful PP.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Malgorzata!
That Palace is certainly wonderful and your picture is truly attractive with excellent sharpness, exposure, colors, pov and composition!
TFS - congratulations!
Best regards,

Hello Malgorzata.
Another shot from the TE get-together - I saw one of Aires' pictures yesterday.
This architecture is wondrous to behold. Such colour and spectacular shapes.
I admire the exposure in this one - it is well controlled and really shows both the highlights and shadows superbly. Maybe you did some excellent work with layers to keep the detail in both the sky and the palace, but whatever you might have done the result is marvellous. Pleasing proportions in your crop, too.
Regards,
Andrew

marvelous shot Malgorzata

Witaj Małgosiu,
Myślę, że to dopiero początek zdjęć z mitingu portugalskiego. Jak tutaj kolorowo i ile tutaj światła. Niełatwo o podobne naświetlenie w Polsce. Krajobraz tutaj iście bajkowy podobnie jak kolorystyka i kształy. To niewątpliwe przeniesienie do świata baśni i bajek z dzieciństwa.
Pozdrawiam serdecznie,
Jurek

Salut Malgorzata.
A very pretty palate, which you emphasized well by a very good framing and splendid colors. The sky is absolutely superb. A great success.
Cheer.

Super fota!
Pozdrawiam,
Darek

Hello Malgorzata,

Now that is an amazing piece of medieval architecture!
The fairytale castle really stands out and the colourful towers attract attention...
The angle of light adds a bit of 3D feeling to the structure, sharp fine details!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Czesc Malgorzata,
Pozdrowienia
M

ciao malgorzata,
what a difference a bit of sunshine makes... I was in Sintra exactly a year ago, on a cold and gray day, and although I enjoyed this strange architectural concoction very much, the warm tones of your photo are nowhere to be found in my pictures...
you give a good view of the castle, it shows very well the strange mixture of styles and the eclectic architectural approach.
great Spring light - crystal clear, fresh and inviting :)
have a good Easter!
