Windmill of larzac, Saint-Pierre-de-la-Fage

One view.
Other view.

Action.

Windmill renovated in 2006, in Saint-Pierre-de-la-Fage sur le CAUSSE DU LARZAC.

The windmills convert the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy. It were used to actuate grinding stones, pumps, saws, etc...
The wings of the mill are supported by a tower, whose roof carrying the axis of the mill is directional in the case of the mill-turn.
If the whole tower is directional, one speaks then about mill on pivot or with candlestick. A typical mill of Anjou, compromised between the precedents, is called mill cavier. The orientation of the mill is done by pushing the tiller or tail of the mill.
The wings are generally in wood some and covered with canvas. The rotational movement of the horizontal axis of the mill is transmitted to a vertical axis by a whole of gears, the wheel, often manufactured out of wood of various gasolines chosen for their resistance.

The windmill appeared in the East, Egypt and Iran. First mention of windmill in France, date of 1170, in a charter of the town of Arles. The Netherlands are probably the country which counted the greatest number of windmills.
The windmills were used incidentally as semaphores. Ansi, during the wars of the Vendée, the wings of the windmills of Mont des Alouettes indicated to Vendean the positions and movements of the republican troops.

_The "CAUSSE du LARZAC" is vastest and southernmost of "GRANDS CAUSSES", large causses. Its 1000 km ² of plateau rise from 600 to 900 meters. It is limited to the North-East by Dourbie river which separates it from "Causse Noir", in the North-West the Tarn river separates it from the plateau of Lévézou, in the west it stops with the depression of Roquefort. Its surface is strewn with famous sites with the military orders, Knights of the Order of the Temple and Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.

_The "GRANDS CAUSSES", in the south of the Massif Central, are delimited in north by the plateau of "Aubrac", in the east by the Cévennes, the south by the plain of the "lodévois", in the west by the plateau of "Lévézou". These are plateaus limestones whose altitude varies from 700 to 1250 meters of altitude, and of surface going up to 1000 km².
The "Grands Causses" are formed by important "Causses of Larzac" (1000 km²), of "Sauveterre" (550 km²), "Méjean" (330 km²), and "Noir" (200 km²), but also of the causses "Comtal", "Rouge" and of "Sévérac", and many small peripheral causses like causses of "Mende", "Blandas", "Changefèges", "Bégon", etc… No waterway circulates on the surface of the plates, because the rainwater infiltrates in the karstic, generating networks of many swallow-holes and caves, to re-appear in the valleys. Geology of causses and the cévennes.

The windmills inspired many great writers and among them:

ALPHONSE DAUDET, 1840-1897, who wrote in "the secrecy of Cornille Master", "Letters of My Mill":
"... Sunday we went to the mills, by bands. Up there, the millers paid the muscatel. The millers were beautiful like queens, with their rotten of laces and their gold crosses. Me, I brought my fifre, and until the black night one danced of the farandoles. These mills, you see, made the joy and the richness of our country."

RENE BAZIN, 1853-1932, whose Herve Bazin, also writer, were the great nephew, who wrote in connection with the mills of Poitou in "the mill which does not turn any more":
"... The least breeze, which crossed, met it. One did not have any, to make transfer the white wings, that what it is necessary so that the corns glisten, so that a stem of dandelion loses its seeds. A storm made it insane. During the winter, when the wind of north blew, the miller tightened all the fabric, and left only the frame out of rods of chestnut which was enough to turn the grinding stone, and nicely, I assure you."

SAINT-PIERRE-DE-LA-FAGE is a French commune located in the department of Herault, the Languedoc-Roussillon area, populated of 87 Saint-Pierrais in 1999, distributed on 19 km², that is to say 5 hab./km².

Hello Joël,
The dramatic sky makes a great backdrop for the mill; whilst the little gravel path draws the viewer towards it. Pleasing natural colours and very good sharpness.

Bonjour Joel,

Good capture of the windmill under that dark sky. I know it was taken in February, but it's autumn that this shot reminds me of. Perfect pov with the winding sandy path leading into the scene and a good choice of format too. Nice one!

Benny

Bravo

Hello Joel.
Beautiful windmill on the beautiful photography, great dark clouds in the sky, very natural colours, congratulations.
Regards Robert.

very nice photo Joel,
good composition fine perspective, good balance, very good contrast with the dark sky, I like the format to, have a nice day.

Hi Joel,
a picturesque photo from this old windmill, the composition is attractive and nicely balanced, the stormy sky add a lot to the romantic atmosphere. Beautiful shot, Tfs! Have a nice day!
George

Beau registre!
Amitiés,
Carlos

Bonjour Joel!
Very pretty pastel colors. In addition, however strong contrasts. Very good point of view, engages in the eye for the straight road to the mill. The rain clouds give a nice contrast. Just Don Quiote missing. :-)
Sincerely, Csaba

Windmills are always very good motives! Here you have found a particularly goodlooking example. I didn´t know there were such beautiful windmills in France, this one looks quite Spanish in my eyes. Still, this is a very well balanced composition where you also take advantage of all the colours of the cloudy sky. A very enjoyable image!
Kind regards
Gunnar

Branko

Bonjour Joel, This is a very attractive landscape with the windmill dominating the scene. I like your use of the path to lead one's eyes to the center of the picture, the windmill. The heavy cloud cover seems to accentuate the arms of the mill with its stunning rock formed body. Again, excellent and infomative notes. TY. Regards, Roger

Amicalement
JJ

salut joel

Hello Joël,
This windmill looks very impressive against the so dramatic sky. The contrast between the sun-lighted windmill and the gray clouds is perfect. A very good moment, excellent composition and incredibly high quality!
Best regards,
Sergiy

Hi Joel,
That's a beautiful photo!
I like very much the architecture of this mill. It is really unique. The composition is excellent: the path in the foreground nicely leads the eye to the mill. And of course the sky is fantastic -so dramatic, so beautiful. The dark clouds make an excellent background for the well lit mill.
Beautiful work,
TFS

Hi Joel
the low point of view is great here, with the sand walkway twisting to meet up with the windmill.
light management is fantastic, and sharpness as well evidenced by the stones and testured rooftop.
has a sense of strenght.
Great work
Cheers

Mes compliments, bonne journee',Luciano

Joel,
This is a nicely composed shot with the curving path leading the eye into the shot. The angle of the windmill is nice giving the shot depth and direction. The lighting and colors are great as is the photo's sharpness. The dark sky provides nice contrast for the brightly lit shot.
TFS,
Asa

Google.

Amicalement,
Roger

Bonjour Joel.
