Village, river and tower, Meyrueis

One sight. September 27th, 2009.
Other sight. September 27th, 2009.

In the Jonte river valley, the Meyrueis village preserves vestiges of its medieval fortifications.
With the confluence of Jonte river and Béthuzon river, the TOWER DE L'HORLOGE, rebuilt in 1568, whose top carries a bell gone back to 1634.

Meyrueis is located between the solid mass of MONT AIGOUAL at the south, and CAUSSE MEJEAN in north, thus separating the Cevennes from GRANDS CAUSSES, with the confluence of the JONTE river with Brèze river and Béthuzon river.

_The JONTE river takes its source in the Massif of the Mont Aigoual, near the hameau of Cabrillac of the commune of Rousses, in the department of Lozère, and separates by splendid canyons, the Causse Méjean and Causse Noir, Lozère and Aveyron, after the village of Gatuzières. It is thrown in the Tarn at the village of "le Rozier", after 39 km of course. Jonte river becomes underground to 3 km downstream from Meyrueis, and arises 7 km further with resurgence of the Douze.

_The CAUSSE MÉJEAN in the south of the Massif Central, of a surface of 330 km², is highest of GRANDS CAUSSES, its altitude varying from 800 m to 1247 m with the Mont Cargo, and is the third of four Grands Causses. It is surrounded of the impressive canyons of Jonte river in the south, Tarnon riverin the east and the Tarn riverin north and the west. The thickness of the layers of limestone of Jurassic, reached 650 m, and up to 1500 m per place.

_The GRANDS CAUSSES, in the south of the Massif Central, are delimited in north by the plateau of Aubrac, in the east by the Cévennes, the south by the plain of the lodévois, in the west by the plateau of Lévézou. These are plateaus limestones whose altitude varies from 700 to 1250 meters, and of surface going up to 1000 km².
The Grands Causses are formed by important causses of Larzac (1000 km²), of Sauveterre (550 km²), Méjean (330 km²), and Noir (200 km²), but also of the causses Comtal, Rouge and of Sévérac, and many small peripheral causses like causses of Mende, Blandas, Changefèges, Bégon, etc… No waterway circulates on the surface of the plateaus, because the rainwater infiltrates in the karstic, generating networks of many swallow-holes and caves, to re-appear in the valleys. A little geology of causses and the cévennes.

_The MONT AIGOUAL, located on the commune of Valleraugue, is a granitic solid mass, culminating point of Gard to 1567 m, and second culminating point of Lozère after the Mont Lozere 1702 m, is a south-eastern projection of the Massif Central. It is remarkable by its panorama, its climatology. In clear weather, one discovers on 300 km of ray, the Mediterranean, the Mont Lozere, the Mounts of the Cantal, the Pyrénées, the Alps, and the Grands causses and the surrounding Cévennes.
The watershed between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean crosses the summit part. Several rivers take there their source of which Herault.

MEYRUEIS is a french commune, located in the department of Lozère of the Languedoc-Roussillon area, populated of 851 Meyrueisiens in 1999, distributed out of 105 km², that is to say 8 hab./km². The Celtic people, the Romans, the Visigoths, the Francs, the sarrazins disputed all the area. With the Middle Ages, the feudal lords, the monks, structured and arranged the territory. The One hundred Year old War, the Plague, the wars of religion, the French revolution, the world wars of the 20th century tested the population and affected the demography of this little populated area. Meyrueis area.

Bonjour Joël
Une belle vue plongeante claire et nette sur ce vieux pont et son environnement.
Merci pour le partage et bonne journée.

Hi Joel,
The superb optic angle lends fabulous mood to the sight. As if we would see charming details of a story-book....many beautiful architectural details can be discovered on the photo. I got richer by an experience again as the big admirer of Languedoc Roussillion. Beautiful shot. Tfs! Have a nice day!

Bonjour Joël,

Belle et intéressant vue "aérienne" qui montre bien la structure du village construit sur les deux rives dela jonte. Une vue qui permet d'apprécier les édtails en notamment la tour et son campanile. Belle luminosité et contratses bien captés.

Hello Joel,
Very interesting photo and note. You have picked a good position for your photo. As always very good strong colors, simple frame. Also, very good WS.

very original shot here Joel.
good perspective, fine depth, good composition, fine balance. good photo job here Joel.
regard jaap

Hello Joel,
The elevated POV gives us a good look at the village and a good layout of the buildings and the river.
Looking at your two accompanying images I have to confess I prefer them to this high shot.
The high shot gives me the feeling that I am detached from the scene, that I am just observing from a distance, however the other two images get me involved in the village and the atmosphere, I can feel myself looking past the lovely flowers and onto the village.
I guess what I'm trying to convey it that they are all good shots, just that for personal taste and imagining what it is like to be there it is better to feel as if one is involved with the photographers image.
No I haven't been drinking :))
Best wishes

Bonjour Joel,

Hi Joel,
What a beautiful old village with many architectures built with stones, good bird view shoot to show a large bridge connecting villagers at both sides, nice WS to show the village by the river, full with relaxing feel in a sunny day, thanks for sharing.
