The Notre-Dame church, of the 12th 14th centuries.

One sight.
Other sight.

Built on a rock headland, on left bank of Gartempe, the church listed in 1093, is built on a crypt which shelters a mural fresco of the 12th century.
The fresco reports the crowning of Catherine of Alexandria, born towards 290 in Egypt, martyrized into 307, celebrated on November 25th, at the origin of the celebration of the young girls to be married of more than 25 years, the catherinettes.

The church became collegial in 1228, following the establishment of 14 canons.
There too, the One hundred year old war with 14th and 15th century, the wars of religion at the 16th century damaged the church which was restored at the 19th century, and classified historic building in 1862.

One can see in Montmorillon, The Pont Vieux, the old bridge, gothic bridge of the 15th 16th centuries which crosses Gartempe river, and the Saint-Laurent chapel of the 12th century, like l'Octogone, chapel of cemetery of the 12th century presenting of old paintings on the veins of the vault.

These three monuments belong to the “Valley of the Frescos, "La Vallée des Fresques”.

The VALLEY of GARTEMPE RIVER concentrates from Saulgé to Saint-Savin, in Vienna, several builbings decorated with frescos of the 11th to 19th centuries, and is called for that, the FRESCOS VALLEY.

Gartempe is a river of Poitou and of the Limousin, which takes its source close to the village of Pétillat, the commune of Peyrabout in the department of Creuse, and is thrown in the Creuse river close of "la Roche-Posay" in the department of Vienne, after a way of almost 200 kilometers. It crosses remarkable canyons in granitic landscapes, downstream from "Les Portes de l'Enfer", "The Hell Doors” to Lathus in Vienne.

Montmorillon is a french commune, located in the department of Vienne of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 6898 Montmorillonnais in 1999, divided on 57 km², that is to say 121 hab./km².

Of medieval origin, Montmorillon proposes to the visitors a broad inheritance, made of houses, private mansions, chapels, churches etc…

The novelist Régine Deforges in is originating. She took part in the creation of the biennial living room of the book of Montmorillon. She is also at the origin of the idea of the City of the Writing and the trades of the book, unique in France, following the example of other foreign cities.

Régine Deforges, French writer born on August 15th, 1935 in Montmorillon, adopts a very free tone, to defend the women's right to only assume itself, including in their sexuality.

She published in 1981 "La Bicyclette Bleue", "The Blue Bicycle", first volume of a trilogy which also understands “101 avenue Henri Martin” and "le diable en rit encore".
She republished under the title “Irene”, “Le Con d'Irène”, erotic novel of Louis Aragon clandestinely published in 1928. the book was seized for its erotic contents!…

My images of montmorillon.

Hello Joel,

Cordialement.

Hi Joel,
what a lovely composition with a lot of things to see!! The image has a great DOF and it is a really pleasure to see.
TFS.
Have a nice sunday.
Gabriele.

Excellent !
Amicalement

Hello Joël,
Another reason for me to hurry up and get to Montmorillon! The old bridge makes a splendid lead line towards the church; whilst the foreground flowers create a sense of depth and add a nice splash of colour. The image presents a lovely ensemble of architecture with good colours and clarity. Thanks for sharing.

Bon dimanche.

Pierre

Hello Joël,

And as always located at the highest point in town..!
I guess this was so people could get a constant reminder of God's presence, with the church visible from almost everywhere...
This is a balanced composition with good depth, the red flowers add a fine contrast!

Greetings,
Pablo -

HI Joel,
I follow your eminent photos from different parts of France with great interest, not only for your high quality but also to find new and interesting goals! This picture is certainly well composed! I like your addition of these flowers in the foreground to balance the strict forms of the impressive church. A really beautiful place here, we´ll put it on our list!
Kins regards
Gunnar

Bonsoir joel,

Excellente composition et présentation.
Trés bon cadrage avec ces jolies fleurs.
Les details et la clarté sont merveilleux.
Bonne perspective, Un shot complet.
Une bonne soirée,
John

Joel,
Your composition is fine with the flowers providing balance for the scene. The bridge leads the eye into the shot nicely creating a sense of direction. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail.
TFS,
Asa

Ciao caro Joel,

Hi Joel,
A fine photojob of this amazing archetectural edifice. Excellent light to present all the intricate details and textures. Including the large floral arrangement in the foreground is perfect. Very well done and TFS. Gerald

bonjour Joel
