Wildlife in Green Venice, nickname of the Poitevin Marsh, on the territory of the commune of Arçais.

One sight.
Other sight.

Video with Canon Powershot S3IS.

On the canal of "la Taillée", a Common Moorhen at nest.

It often nests on floating supports. The male and the female, remain faithful until the death of one or other. What a good example!
One easily recognizes it with his red nozzle at yellow end.

The sea occupied there is 8000 years all the golf of Pictons.
The 95 000 hectares of the Poitevin Marsh, were built by the marine currents and the alluvia brought by the rivers and rivers. Since the Neolithic era, the resources were exploited there. Salt, fishing, the breeding were developed there until the time Gallo Romaine. With the Middle Ages began great work of draining and installation under the impulse of the abbeys, like the benedictine abbey of Maillezais. They continued in particular under Henri IV and during XIXe century. It was necessary and it is still necessary, to contain the effects of the sea and evacuate surface waters of a marsh often to the lower part of the open seas.
On the whole thousands of kilometers of channels of all sizes, drains, ditches, conches, were dug.

The marshes are divided into two, the desiccated marshes of 47.000 hectares, the wet marshes known as La Venise Verte, Green Venice of 29.000 hectares. 19000 hectares partially desiccated should be added.
Poitevin marsh.

Arçais is a french commune, located in the department of Deux-Sèvres of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 572 Airçaisiens, distributed on 15 km², that is to say 38 hab./km².

In the middle of the marsh poitevin, the village of Arçais is one of most typical.

Pierre

Hello Joël,
A good capture of this moorhen almost hidden by the vegetation in his waterside nest. The reflections are a nice bonus.

a fine capture here my friend,
a well taken shot, good details, fine format, good one, have a nice day.
regard jaap

Bonjour Joël

Wonderful framing on the bird atop its nest, with good dof & sharpness. Nice fg reflections in the water. Tfs!

Who would have thought that a hen could make a good photo Joel?
A great one in difficult circumstances.
