STRONG CASTLE whose construction goes back to the 10th century.
Its walls, its five towers and its keep, were built on a rock, which was in the beginning an island of the river Clouère. Its massive postern and its two towers opened towards the West.
It suffers important injuries during the One hundred Year old War with 14th and 15th century, then during the Wars of religion. Restored, it was the residence of Rochechouart until 1638.
Already in ruins, the French revolution sold it with the demolition. Restored as from 1870, the postern, the castle and the keep, were classified historic buildings of 1912 to 1927.

Notre-Dame CHURCH of the 12th century, old prieurale Notre-Dame and Saint-Cyprien of the 10th 12th centuries.

Appelé Châtel-Achard at the 10th century the name of the village derived to the current Château-Larcher, written in 1627.

Château-Larcher is a french commune, located in the department of Vienne of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 818 inhabitants in 1999, divided out of 15 km², that is to say 53 hab./km².

The site of the castle and of the commune have vestiges of the passage of the Celts and Romans.

Château-Larcher was perhaps the site of the first BATTLE of POITIERS.
According to experts, it was the theater of the decisive battle between Alaric king of the Visigoths and Clovis into 507, who destroyed the kingdom rested by the Visigoths. It, is often also placed at Vouillé, in the same department.

THREE battles of very great importance took place close to the town of Poitiers. They are the battles of Poitiers.

The FIRST proceeded into 507 in Vouillé, (Where with Château-Larcher), where Clovis has defeated and also killed the king of the Visigoths Alaric II, who had authority on Aquitaine.

SECOND had as place the hamlet of Moussais in Vouneuil-sur-Vienne into 732, where Charles Martel overcoming the sarrazins and killed their chief, the emir Abd Al-Rahman, governor of Spain.

The THIRD occurred in 1356 to Nouaillé-Maupertuis in wood and small valleys around the Abbey Notre-Dame and Saint-Junien. The ambitions and claims of Edouard III king of England on the kingdom of France, expeditions of Prince Noir his son, starting from Guyenne, will show the defeat of 1356. The barons, knights and soldiers of king de France, Jean II le Bon, are made beaten and decimate. The king of France was made captive. English requires an enormous ransom, the king will be finally released after the signature of the treaty of Brétigny in 1360 in which it is agreed to pay 3 million ecus of gold and to leave with English almost all the South-west of France.

Hello Joël,
I remember visiting this village a few years ago. A good capture of this ensemble of architecture, which benefits much form a lovely warm light. Good rendering of the tones and textures and very good stitch work.
