The wealthy sit in cafes, those who have a little cash go to the beach, and those who do not have a penny to their name – lay on a mattress in the doorway of their house and watch the passersby. 'The day passes here as if you were in jail - you sleep, eat a little, and go back to sleep. Who would ever believe that once upon a time the guys would organize a party with dancers?'

“The young people in Gaza not only do not have a night life, they have no life at all. They have nothing to dream about, and the entire day is centered on the nargilah (water pipe) and sleep,” according to 24 year-old Ahmed, describing the dullness of everyday life in the Gaza Strip. Ahmed estimated that the majority of young people in Gaza are unemployed “and without money you cannot talk about recreation or enjoyment, even if it is here in Gaza.”

Ahmed studied engineering in Egypt and Gaza, but his dreams of joining a construction company or setting up his own business collapsed with the latest upheaval. “The days pass as if you were in jail - you sleep, eat a little, and go back to sleep. At night, if you have a few liras, you can go to a café to smoke a nargilah. It has already been nine days since I have done anything. I just sleep.”

(...taken from an article written by Ali Waked, in August 2007, for an israeli news portal...)

...taken in a nargilah cafe in tophane neighbourhood of istanbul, on a cold saturday night in april...

...the workshop is for the ones who did not like the tobacco tones here...

(soğuk bir cumartesi gecesi, tophane'deki nargile cafelerden birinde çekildi.)

hi korkut
that's a masterpiece, once again you did a perfect photojob!!!
everything captured in detail and high quality but what i admire to your photos is the atmosphere...here little misty because of the smoke...i read also your note, it's really so disappointing for young people to live in such insecurity without dreams or without being able to express their creativity..."the days pass as if you were in jail" just unbelievable to feel like that
have a nice evening

Hi Korkut,
I have no words for this!
Absolutely stunning and the image conveys the mood totally.
It is really a sorry state of affairs in Gaza right now.

Merhaba Korkut.

Ah...too difficult for me this picture. I can't take a picture with smoke...and you did it really well.

My compliments!

Well, I love the tobacco tones, so this is my version, Korkut. Excellent article that fits so well the image. Fantastic effect of the smoke coming out from every holes of his body (I'm sure there's also some coming out of his hears) and taking control of the whole space and mood. He's going to get lost and in a few minutes he will disapear from our sight. A friend with a camera should rescue him...

Valentino like in its concept, excellently processed in great sepia tones. What you say about this place is absolutely tru, but I guess those in power don't really mind...

merhaba korkut,
oldukça başarılı bir portre.
dumanlar siyahbeyaz olanda kontrasttan ötürü daha iyi görünüyor.
eline sağlık,

HI Korkut
First all thank you for this very true and interesting note about Gaza. Your illustration, although clearly related to turkish habits, is extremely evocative.
From a purely technical POV your sepia portrait is great. The abundant smoke covering the right half but leaving crisp clear details on the left side is perfect.
A double smiley if I could ;-)

Very nice portrait.
Excellent and an interesting note to put things in perspective.

hi korkut
As always, your portrait job is excellent and shows very well your sensitivity in general and in particular when aproaching people!
Perfect framing,

That's a great and fascinating portrait korkut very well made indeed , many compliments
also for the pp .

Hello dear Korkut.
A superb portrait, leaves me in awe. Although I dislike smoke, it is what gives such a mood here, and somehow there is also a kind of old fashioned look, you know, one like in some films from the 50-60. Love the soft textures of skin and smoke against the sharp details of the sweater, millimeter compo too. I think I prefer the tobacco version for it enhances the whole feeling. Sensitive note too.

Kind regards

Hello Korkut,
nice the snapshot of this young man that is smoking water pipe suffused with smoke like the people of Gaza strip that are suffused in blond,in disaster of cosmic proportions and in miserableness.I read the article written by Ali Waked, and really i was disappointed from the human desolation.A masterpiece shot as ever.

Hi korkut, I love this intense and such superbly nuanced shot with the smoke hanging thick and captured brilliantly. marhaba my friend

Hi Korkut,
The photo demonstrates the joys of the pipe smoking wonderfully. It is sad already if an other joy does not arise for somebody. The man's weary glance being wrapped up in smoke is very expressive. An enclosed writing is very good for the picture. Great!
Have a nice day!

Merhaba Korkut,
Düşünmek istemesek de gerçekler böyle. Özellikle masum çocukların yaşadıklarını düşününce hiç bir şeyden zevk almıyor insan.

Hi Korkut! Old proverb said. where it exists smoke exists also fire that it burns. Most excellent idea and work. The smoke kills!!! ,,,NO smoking in the...No new persons

Prices of weaponry on the world's markets:

1. Kalashnikov AK-47 $450.oo ea.
2. M-16 rifle $1150.oo ea.
3. Katyusha rocket (each) $600.oo ea.
4. Katyusha launcher stationary $22.000.oo ea.
5. Katyusha launcher mobile $80.000.oo ea.
6. Bazooka launcher $4400.oo ea.
7. Single round of ammunition (avg) $1.85 ea.

One nargilah - $0.10 ea.

Hamas, legally and democratically elected by the Palestinians government of Gaza, won the election on the promises to kill all the Jews in the world and wipe the Israel off the map.
Hamas is (to the best of my knowledge) the only legally elected government of the world - which keeps their promises given before election.
It's a positive sample for the entire world. Our imperialistic-bourgeois-zionist-capitalistic governments are promising and promising and what...? They never deliver !
If only our elected official learn anything from those people out there, the world would be a different place to live.
Unfortunately - our, so called 'democratic" governments ( yeah, sure) - not only don't want to learn anything from the most progressive forms of ruling, but they actually interfere with the noble, economical goals of the other parties ( i.e: not delivering on time contracted weapons or, not delivering full supply of ammunition for them)...No wonder it creates unnecessary tension among the peace loving people of Palestine and frustrates greatly their leaders.

Just to think of it... One nargilah cost about ten cents...Ha !!!

Absolutely wonderful photo, greatly enhanced by the abundance of Neat Image applied to it, which gave it that pleasant, wax like mask on the face of the young man.

Amilcament, dear Korkut.
Have a most wonderful and prosperous 2009.
Yours truly - george

this type of photo happens once in a month on TE...

Things go wrong when a group, a nation, a country tries to demonstrate that it's better than another group, nation, country..

There're only two things I would change in this photo, the rest is perfect (the crop, the exposure..). One of these is the colours. I also like the desaturated version, although that's not totally B&W. The other is that the surfaces are a bit too soft for my taste. I mean I would expect more details on the man's face and on his pullover.
Did you know popular the waterpipe is in Hungary? I also have one, and I use it regularly! (When I told Deniz about it, he was very surprised! (: Btw, do you have any new about him?)

Şimdi birilerini Allah'a havale edeceğim ama diyeceklerki kolaylığı seçiyor...

It's not only the volutes of smoke that are fascinating, for me it's even more the facial expression, the way the "guy" is day dreaming, a bit absent... I know he is only smoking tobacco but it makes me imagine that he was inhaling another substance, more intoxicating !

Strange how smoking can be so fascinating in photography. And I hope that he is not smoking more nowadays ;-))

A beautiful photo,
Ellinize sağlık,

Dear Korkut, if you can communicate with Deniz because I am not sure that he can read his emails often : please say merhabalar to him from me, hoping that he is getting used to the routine there and keeping the moral up...

Hello Korkut,

All I want to say about the subject is the resemblance to the late Freddie Mercury-The eyes, lips, nose, all very similar. A young Freddie, before he started to look like the lost member of the village people, that is..Not that I didn't love him either way.

I think I prefer the sepia.

Merhaba Korkut,

A very inspired portrait! He looks as immersed in his thoughts as much of he is immersed in the thick, beautiful lit smoke. Spotless framing, clarity and smoothness, very nice sepia tones.

Just a while ago, I commented a ahmetgedikli's post that also referred the sad situation in Gaza.

Selamlar, José.

Hello Korkut,

I was already wondering about such a photograph being able to be taken in Gaza. Well, the note explains it clearly and is a wonderful, objective representation of the current state of affairs in that region of the world.
And with a waterpipe, it had to be tobacco toned... Very nice.

Oh this is GOOD, Korkut! Really good! It reminded me immediately of one of the best Victorian era poems by Tennyson, "The Lotus-Eaters", where Ulysses and his companions end up on the island and fall into oblivion by the narcotic food (lotus)...it really has this mood of apathy...the smoke is fantastic...bravo, really thrilled about this one!!!

I have discovered by chance your splendid gallery,I am really impressed by the beauty of your photos!I have chosen this portrait, because I love the effect of the soft smoke wraping the man, that gives this special mood to the photo! This is superbly framed with a wonderful light!I love it!

Magic image Korkut, compliments, great feeling and excellent capture, very well done, compliments, also to the note, really good and actual.

Hi Korkut,

I was the second person who saw this image, but after 560 views i come back to put my comment. As on a lot of your images i need some time to find the right words. Maybe the note confused me in the link between war and this peaceful looking image. But here is more, the work you did here, like the man is alsmost a staute when seeing his face, but the smoke tells us he's alive and in to deep thoughts. An intriging image with a lot of questions....i do not even want to think about that hell in Gaza :-(

Take care,

mrhb korkut;
fotoğrafın üstünlüğü tartışılmaz ve içerikle beraber yakıcı oluyor.tfs.

I think this shot summarizes a lot of orientalistic clichés about Turkish men very effectively:
A dark, pasha like guy with a perfidious, absent gaze sitting in a café aman and smoking lazily his water pipe. The only thing I miss here is Burcu dancing lascivious cifteteli for Pasha Rigo.

Great ethnic compo that fits perfectly with TE.

Hi Korkut.

I love both versions and but I think I prefer the sepia one.
The smoke, his expression, his eyes,... everything is fantastic.
This is a winner, I am sure.

Deniz çok karizmatik çıkmış. Ama kısa saçlı çok daha iyi görünüyor. :o) Çok güzel bir resim. Eline sağlık.

Merhaba Korbut,
Stupendous portrait - great quality to the BW, nostalgic like old Hollywood studio shots of stars. Excellent work.

aaa bu da plastik riggo olmuşşş. eleman şimdi nöbet tutsun sen çocuğu neat manyağı yap :P

You are right, Korkut, the tobacco/sepia makes it, giving the appropriate mood... the B&W somehow looks Western European, not Middle Eastern... congrats, Daniel

I am allready lost in the nargilah smoke....
Was an unforgetable experience for me, so I really have the feeling, the atmosfere and the relaxing mood... Everything of those, are reflected here in this excellent photo....
....çok güzel, aferin!!!
Frosso, Giritli..

excellent korkut
artwork as always
very good close shot
the guy has a very mystique look and the slight sweat makes the whole picture remonds me robert de niro at the film Once Upon a Time in America
