The dolmen of Coste Rouge, Soumont

Dolmen of Coste Rouge, going back to 2000 years before J.-C., on the commune of Soumont. It is located on a height of the buttresses of Causse of Larzac, making discover a vast panorama to the sea.

One sight
Other sight

It is known as also dolmen of Grammont, since located on the field of the priory Saint-Michel of Grammont of XIIe XIIIe centuries.
It is still called in occitan “Ostalet de las fadas”, the small house of the fairies.
It is characterized by its cut opening, called in “door of furnace”, and its flagstone of cover of approximately 9 m², which largely exceed the sepulchral room.
It was in the beginning a tumulus, which one guesses the site on the ground around the dolmen, thanks to the stones still on the ground.
One finds in the vicinity a table cut in the rock and dug peripheral drains, of which the use was probably ritual.

The dolmens were prehistoric megalithic collective burials, used in Europe, but also in other parts of the world, as in the Far East. They consisted of horizontal flagstones posed on vertical flagstones driven out of ground. They in the beginning were entirely covered by a tumulus makes stones and of ground.

Soumont is a french commune, located in the department of the Herault of the Languedoc-Roussillon area, populated of 134 Soumontais, distributed on 11 km², that is to say 12 hab./km².

More than 550 dolmens are known in the department of Herault, concentrates mainly on Causse of Larzac, in Minervois, the garrigues of the Peak Saint-Loup in the North of Montpellier.

One counts 50 000 dolmens in the world, including 20 000 in Europe.
Approximately 4500 dolmens are disseminated in 60 French departments, mainly in the areas Brittany, Poitou, Quercy, Languedoc.
The department of Aveyron, with 1000 dolmens, adds up more dolmens than all joined together Brittany.
One counts of them 600 to 800 in Quercy, 800 in Ardeche, 600 in Languedoc.
One also counts some in Ireland, in Wales, in the English counties of Devon and of Cornouailles, in Portugal, in Spain, in Belgium, in Germany of North, in Scandinavia, in North Africa, in India, in Syria, in Ethiopia and the Crimea.
Korea only conceals with it 30 000 dolmens, of various types, high on all front thousand-year-old Ier. J.-C., one also finds some more recent in Japan.
The dolmens miss continents American and Australian

Bonjour Joel ,

Hi Joel,
Great shot from this imposing dolmen with spectacular composition. I like the beautiful environment and the impressive cloudy atmosphere, excellent shot from this ancestral place. The WS superb again. Congratulations.
Have a nice day!

salut joel

Hello Joel, During that time we had only Aborigines in Australia & they were very different type of people. I like this scene it's very interesting & well captured in good natural colour & detail. Your note is also very interesting & informative. Thank you, The images in your WS are also very good, showing these dolmens from a different perspective.

Hello Joel! Amazing stones. Amazing rocks. Superb place. Wonderful picture. Good POV and capture. Original shot. Well done!

Excellent travail!

very nice one Joel,
good pov, fine composition, good contrast and a fine balance in the shot, good photojob, have a nice day.
regard Jaap

Excellent shot of this dolmen! Your composition is fine placing the dolmen off center which helps to create direction in the shot. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail. The sky is great giving the scene an even more mysterious feel.

Hello Joël,
A good capture of this interesting and ancient structure. It is well positioned in the frame allowing us a glimpse of the surrounding countryside. The sky adds much to the mood. Very good colours and clarity. Fine work.

Hallo Joel!
Again a very interesting object in your collection. I've never seen something like this. You show this dolmen in a very informative photo in natural colours. This must be a very special and somehow touching place ... Thank for for the excellent note!
Greetings from cold Germany!

Hi Joel,
fine dolmen and perfectly positioned in its natural situation and in this beautiful framed photo.
Great light.
Regards, Gerrit

bonjour Joel,

Very interesting photo and note. I like the dolmen and I like the surrounding landscape. We have similar tombs in Sardinia, which were called by the people "Giants tombs". It's curious how the folklore is similar, we have different prehistoric tombs escavated in the rock which are called "houses of the fairies"!
I like also the ws.
All the best,

Bonjour Joel,
What a nice megalithic construction, ...and incredibly well conserved!. Here, near Barcelona there are a few ones of them, but I would recomend you, as a specially eye catching and well conserved one, the dolmen of "Pedra Gentil", in the village of Vallgorguina. Good job, and very well worked note!
Best wishes
