New Zealand plants are very special. 85% of all flowering plants are still endemic, appearing nowhere else in the world. NZ plants evolved with different pollinators. Flowers relied on general pollinators (colour-blind flies, moths and beetles) or even birds and didn’t have to develop colourful variations, so a typical flower would be green or white (= easy to spot at night) and small. The ecological balance has been disturbed for a long time, not only by the disappearance of the majority of native forests but also by over 300 introduced pest plants (weeds) which now threaten the survival of over 60 native plant species. Weeds multiply faster than native plants and thrive on the climatic conditions, taking over many niches in the landscape, stealing away nutrients in the soil or suffocating plants by climbing over them.

I was in New Zealand in early autumn so there were not so many flowers. But the rainforests are fabulous. New Zealand forests feel as if a dinosaur might appear at any moment - this is probably due to the ancient tree ferns which haven’t changed much in the last few hundred million years.
Here the trio of beautiful New Zealand flowers.
On the left, it is probably kind of Grevillea.

On the right - the pohutukawa, iconic tree of New Zealand, also called the Christmas tree because it flowers a Pohutukawabeautiful red colour around Christmas time. Their gnarly branches extend in all directions, a stunning sight in steep coastal positions, where they survive due to salt-tolerant aerial roots. The bushy red flowers provide nectar for the birds and bees.
Hmm. I do not know what it is in the middle. I couldn't find it on Google. It looks similar to fuchsia, or maybe kind of Datura?

Sorry, it is too big in beta. Better to see it in the new window.

Ciao Malgo,

Tu as trouvé le moyen parfait pour mettre trois photos par jour sur le site. Le procédé est très efficace. Ici, tu as bien mis le rouge à l'honneur dans ce beau triptyque.

Hello Malgo,

The pohutukawa honey is quite good and although customs in Australia gave it a suspicious look they let me bring it through Brisbane airport. A nice triptych of various red flowers with good sharpness and saturation. Tfs!

Bonjour, chère Malgo,

Un vrai plaisir à contempler !

Hello dear Malgorzata and have a nice

fantastic flowers
your photo changed my mood now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ciao Malgo
bella serie di fiori, tutti rossi, unico colore???
Ottima nota, ma tu non sarai molto soddisfatta, sei molto curiosa e ti sarebbe piaciuto saperne di più su questi fiori.
Buon we

Hello Malgo,
In a country where there's no need for plants to develop colourful variations for their flowers, you found different examples of fiery red flowers.
I've always found red the most beautiful colour for a flower. I presume because of the strong contrast with its green environment, like on these pictures here.
A very attractive collage!
Best regards, Paul
