[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have deliberately not posted political photos here before, out of respect for TE's Terms of Service. But I hope an exception is made for this photo, as I consider it to be a reportage image of what is happening in my country at the moment. We are at a turning point in Australian history and politics.

In March and in May 2014 in cities and towns all over Australia, 200,000 people from all walks of life and political persuasions marched in protest at the recent actions of our Government. We are experiencing a very dark period in our political history where the conservative government has openly declared their allegiance to Big Business & the Murdoch-owned media. It has openly declared war on pensioners, the poor, the disabled, asylum seekers, on our indigenous Australians, middle Australia and most relevantly for TE, a war on our environment. Even former conservative party members have spoken out against what is happening. Former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser has actually left his beloved political party, labelling our present Prime Minister the most dangerous man in Australian politics, perhaps ever.

Church leaders have spoken out against the breaches of international treaties, and the attacks on our most vulnerable citizens. 8 Church leaders from all denominations were forcibly removed and arrested today by Police for PRAYING at our Prime Minister's Office. If Australia was South Africa or Germany, Australia would have been sanctioned by the United Nations by now.

If you've read my notes on some of my recent photos, you will be aware of the Government's plans to dump 3 million cubic tonnes of spoil onto the Great Barrier Reef, the plans to allow the Indian mega-company Adani to expand its interests in the Carmichael Mine which would see uncontained dredging and dumping in and around the Reef, the plans to de-classify 400,000 square hectares of World Heritage-listed forest in Tasmania and New South Wales, the wholesale and uncontained licence to mine for coal seam gas (fracking) in all states of Australia, polluting irredeemably our water supply and farming land, and so many other atrocities too long and sad to list here.

Not much has been reported of this in the overseas Press, due to the stranglehold that the Murdoch-owned Newscorp, Fox News, and Sky News have on the media. What little information is allowed to dribble through is misinformation. So I resort to publishing it here.

The Australian people are angry and have been lied to. We will not go down without a fight.

Here's a short clip of the protest on 18 May 2014 in Sydney: March In May 2014 Sydney.

Here's a song by Sarah Blasko that sums it up better than I can. Sarah played for the crowd and marched shoulder to shoulder with us: We Won't Run

Howdy Global Citizen,

Emotional candid, people standing up to money and power. The monochrome approach makes for a timeless news setting.

What bothers me perhaps more than the Rich & Greedy controlling the Earth, is their effectiveness with 'Propaganda'. I am constantly amazed at average people supporting negative impacts because they believe in the propaganda lies. In the Colonies all they have to do is associate their power agendas with key emotional words - Democracy, Capitalism, Freedom, etc...
Having a degree in History, I could go on forever with specific examples of the Rich & Greedy. In summary the most important fact to help understand actions of governments and companies is "to follow the Money". Just one small example (actually huge), are WARS, because they are extremely profitable for munitions, equipment, etc. companies.

Anyway, keep fighting the good fight, and sharing knowledge is one important step.
Best wishes,
SocialistRay

Ciao Lisa,
A very strong message you are promoting here, which certainly needs to be heard. I cannot say I have seen or read anything about this in the UK or French press or TV, through the French tend to be rather parochial in their reporting. An excellent documentary image that says it all.

Fracking is much in the news over here; the French have banned it altogether, the Conservatives in the UK are much in favour though there are many opponents.

Good for you Lisa. A disturbing and thought-provoking note, attached to a simple, eloquent reportage photograph. Let's hope the message gets out, and preventative action is taken.

Regards

Will

Hello Lisa,
there really is a need for more information to be given to the public world wide regarding these vital issues, however cynic that I am I doubt that it would arouse strong passions in those who could bring pressure to bear the upon the perpetrators of these appalling acts.
Keep up the good work.
Kindest wishes Les.

Hi Lisa,
Holy God, this sounds Ike something or from another era, I cannot believe so much evil is coming from one party. I also cannot believe how little, nay none of this has been reported in the media, certainly not here in Ireland. Reading your list is like reviewing a litany of atrocities and I commend the people like tho in this shot who can remain calm in the face of such greed and stupidity. I knw my blood is boiling reading what you have written in your note.
Your photo is crisp, calm, clear and considered which is a beautiful tribute t the protest these people are making. They do this so calm to stop others from wreaking destruction of your beautiful country. Is the protests and people power having an impact? I hope do, I really do. If there is anything I can do on this side of the world to help spread the word, please just let me know.
I love your calm picture, but I am still rather angry right now. I am also trying hard to restrain my choice of language, do I shall just call them dirty scoundrels. I'm sure you can read into what I want to say though.
With you in spirit from the emerald isle.
Noel

Ciao cara Lisa,

Sorry I've not been looking at TE for a little while - we're just back from a lovely holiday in Menorca. So I shall now take some time to examine your recent photographs.

This one is a superb reportage picture to which you have added a very interesting, emotive and in-depth note. I would make no apology for the mention of politics as the theme of TE is "learning about the World throgh photography" and that World must include not only the physical World but also the behaviour of creatures within it - and mankind can often be the most evil of those creatures. And, to my mind, anything that can help rid the Earth of Murdoch and his associates must be good.

I love your photograph. What I like most about it (apart from its excellent technical quality) is the bold and simple composition, the huge placard easily legible and perfectly placed in the frame. And the two people holding it appear pleasant, ordinary, normal people with a genuine concern - not raving political lunatics who are simply out for self gain.

A very bold photograph with excellent light, strong tones and exquisite details and sharpness.

Brilliant!

Kindest Regards,

John.

Ciao Lisa
Carlo

Lisa
On comprend ton "coup de gueule"! Malheureusement, il n'y a pas qu'en Australie que des choses comme cela se passent et votre combat est quasiment mondial. Une photo-reportage qui a tout à fait sa place sur TE.
Amicalement
JJ

this is the "real world" compared to the "bugs bunny world" of TE. i didn't know political photos were against TE TOS, as i've seen many of them. i think its ok, unless you try inciting a revolt :)

Ciao Lisa,

Do you think that the protesters have any chance against what is the key for governments these days: economy and job creation?
I like the use of black and white that gives a documentary look to the picture.

Have a nice day

Serge

Hi Lisa,
This is a good reportage shot and a detailed, factual note. These are indeed uncertain times in Australia, the will of the Government, Media and large business' run against the views of most average Australians. I watch the ABC and SBS, as the mainstream media disturbs me so much here, sometimes I wonder what the coming years will bring...
Cheers
Justin

Hello Lisa,
This is a great documentary photo, and the choice of B/W is very effective. It's amazing how governments can continue to damage the environment, even as we see the devastating effects begin to wreak havoc on the world. Thanks for making us aware of what's going on there in Australia. We haven't heard anything about it on the news over here.

Hi Lisa,
This is very much learning about the world. Latest news about Australia have concerned helping on search of the lost Malaysian plane, besides Formula 1 and tennis results. Europe has plenty of own problems though, so that's no surprise.
Nowadays everything is justified by economy. It kind of invalidates meaningful discussion when all arguments are nullified by business reasons. And yet, governments still manage fail on what seems to be their single aim.
Excellent shot. Well working backlight, tight framing, clear message and symbolical green framing, on B&W version though.
Kari

Dear Lisa,
we Austrians are always guided by our politicians hoodwinked, there is justice systems at us-one for the rich, the other for the poor! The corporations rule with money Austria!
Many greetings from Austria
Wolfgang

Ciao Lisa, gran bel messaggio, splendido bianco e nero con ottima nitidezza e magnifica luce, brava, un abbraccio Silvio

Hi Lisa - What a lot of super shots have been posted in my absence. I've picked this one out from your gallery because I know how dear this protest is to your heart and I want to add my support. A powerful shot, perfect in B&W. I note the stony/sad expressions on the faces of the two banner holders.

Hats off to all you and your fellow countrymen for standing up for the rights of others and for the beautiful world we live in.

Warmest greeting my friend

Rosemary

Hi Lisa!
The reasons are really worth the fight. I've seen petitions here also, it's too much important indeed, and not just for you! A very good photo in b&w, even without a note it's easy to understant it! Great post!
