As the title suggests, we are looking west on the eastern end of the touristic section of Beale Street. The facade in the distance held up by six steel girders has an interesting story. It is the facade of what used to be Gallina Exchange Building. It was built by judge and magistrate for Shelby County, Charles Gallina in 1891. It was a three story building with a salloon and a gambling hall on the first floor, courtroom on the second floor and Gallina’s private residence on the third floor. The Gallina Exchange Building was also a hotel with 20 rooms, each with a marble fireplace. It was the Pride Of Beale Street, popular with the Grand Opera House clientele and many of the traveling actors. After Judge Gallina’s passing in 1914, it would become the home to a pharmacy, clothing store and dentist's office. The steel girders were placed in 1980 to support the facade, originally as a temporary measure after a fire gutted the building and a windstorm caused the collapse of the rear and side walls. The plans to rebuild the structure as a hotel never materialized and the girders are now a permanent part of the street. In the 1990s Silky O'Sullivan's Irish Pub moved to the location and made the open area behind the facade their patio.

Hello Murat,
A lovely atmospheric composition from this end of Beale Street. The girders propping the Gallina building offer a strong focal point. Excellent light management to capture the mood.

Hi Murat,

Sort of looks like a toned down version of the Las Vegas strip. Its good that traffic appears to have been restricted and pedestrians are able to use the street. Good sharpness and well managed backlight. Tfs!

Hello Murat,
I really like the play of light and shadows here and the contrast between the dark and sunlit parts. The façades on both side have a lot of interesting details, which also add some bright colours. Great photo. Thanks for your e-mail, I've forwarded it to my dad, we'll reply asap.

Hi Murat
interesting story indeed. What a shame, going from a Saloon and Gambling Hall and a courtroom, to a pharmacy sigh....Time hasn't been good to it. as least they've kept parts of it with the angular steel beams. I've never seen this view of the area before, great post. cheers
Craig

murat

looks like the light of the day was almost ending its job in the town. there is a kind of chaos in this street, some decay with a poor touch of vegas, despite the people in scenery it looks empty.

take care
