This historic church is half a block east of the touristic section of Beale Street. It is referred to as First Baptist Church, Beale Street Baptist Church, or Beale Avenue Baptist Church. It is notable for being the first Memphis church built for blacks. It was designed by the prominent Memphis architectural firm Jones & Baldwin, a partnership between Edward Culliatt Jones and Matthias Baldwin. Its foundation stone was laid in 1869, and it was constructed between 1871 and 1885 by a congregation of freed slaves. It is often regarded as “the Mother of black churches” and in 1892 was home to the first black newspaper, The Memphis Free Speech, edited by Ida B. Wells, the famous civil rights journalist. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Teddy Roosevelt made visits to the church. The church originated in the home of, and was pastored by, a white minister until 1864, as a city ordinance prohibited blacks from preaching to a congregation.

Birinci Baptist

Hello Murat,

The pale, buttery yellow color of the church building's facade contrasts superbly against the blue sky. Good sharpness & the parked cars and people passing by add scale. Tfs!

Hello Murat,
With some slightly odd features this is not the most beautiful church I have ever seen, but it has an interesting history and the photo is well taken. The warm light is very attractive and the colors are well saturated. The trees almost make me forget the unavoidable cars.
Kind regards,
Gert

Ciao Murat, great view of lovely church, excellent perspective, splendid light and wonderful colors very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hello Murat,
An excellent photo of this church, seen from a good angle. The light enhanced the warm tones of the church building nicely and the contrast with the blue sky is wonderful.

PS - Yeah, in 2005-06 I attended Copenhagen University during my third year. That's also why I have so many (older) photos from Denmark

Hello Murat,

good image of this church, it has an interesting architecture, I like the sun light on the building, the blue sky is the perfect background, well done,

Best regards,

Sergio

A fine relative distant POV towards the corner of the church edifice, Murat. The side light glow and shadows nicely enhanced the contour-lines of the building.
My best regards,
Ike

Hi, Murat.
An interesting construction of this church, which is made in need of the unfinished of its two towers.
Magnificent color, which gives great strength to the image.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

murat

curious the shapes of the church, looks like they have no enough money to finish the spires. terrible situation of blacks in this zone, where they even were prohibited to have a black priest to heard. in older towns of brazil we have many churches built by free slaves.

take care

jorge
