This is not a creation in Photoshop! Twenty-five years ago on a clear winter night I shot an entire roll of images of the moon, using a 1600 mm-focal length Questar telescope, coupled to a Nikon-F camera. (This magnification corresponds to a 2400 mm lens on a digital camera.) I kept careful notes on where the moon was located in each frame, and whether the camera was configured vertically or horizontally. Then I put the film in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator. Months later I retrieved the film, and on a trip to Washington, DC, I used the film again, being mindful of where the moon was located. (The background for the moon was, of course, completely black, unexposed, after the original shots of the moon.) In shooting the Washington Monument and the rest of the skyline of Washington, DC, I used a 135-mm lens. It behooves me to admit I also had a number catastrophic "collisions" of moon and earth. The moon did get punctured, the Fontainebleu Hotel in Miami was leveled, etc.

The Washington Monument is a 550 foot (167 meter) high obelisk erected in the 1860s to honor the First President of the United States, George Washington (1732-1799). Approximately one-fourth of the way from the bottom of the monument, there is a subtle change in color. During the Civil War years (1861-1865) work on the monument was interrupted, and later resumed. During the second phase of the building, a variation of the original stone had been used, exhibiting a slightly different hue.

PS It has been three years since I posted this photo. I was a neophyte with post-processing. There is a great deal of noise that could have been remove. I am grateful to Linda Richters (richtersl) who has done ws versions to show how much the photo could have been corrected.

POSTSCRIPT. In celebrating the 'Year of Astronomy,' inspired by the 400th Anniversary of the invention of the telescope, I employed a 7" Questar to photograph the moon. The resolution one can achieve is quite remarkable.

Hi Bulent!
You had an interesting idea and ended up with a very nice result.
I feel a bit uneasy though looking at the photo and that must be due to the difference in which the sun light hits the moon, i.e. orthogonal to the picture plane, relative to the obelisk and other stuff on the ground which are being illuminated sideways. However, at the same time this goes along pretty well with your title story: that's not the moon but some strange see-through shadowless giant bubble floating randomly in the air. You're right it had a good chance of falling onto that pointy object underneath and vanishing forever and probly that's what happened. You captured a decisive moment.
Great work!

Hi Bulent, this is in my small oppinion one of the best photo on TE, i just love it, it's very well created & a superb write up, thanks for sharing this photo with us, kind regards Wilson.

amazing shot. Perfect title. ;]

Wonderful moon! I've never seen it so big, I'd love to. The best one I've seen was some years ago when I was in the US.

Hello Bulent!
An amazing photo. And your note is very interesting! Great picture!

Hello Professor,
It just goes to show Photography was perhaps a more interesting and definitely more challenging job in the pre-photoshop era. This is an excellent idea, brilliantly executed.

Quite simply one of the best image here on TE. Absolutely breathtaking work, although I would like to see the top of the moon included. Just a minor gripe but still a fantastic composition. Great notes too. Well done.

Best Wishes

It DOES look like the moon is about to impale itself on the Washington Monument...LOL. Your composition was brilliantly executed. Bravo! I tried a workshop for you in which I attempted to remove some of the graininess.

Very powerful image. I agree that it's hard to believe it's real! Also the quality is so good even though the photo is old. Excellent note, and excellent outcome.

Hi Bulent,

Well done.

Hello Bulant,
Perfect capture of the moon.
And a very pleasant compostion with beautiful soft tones.
I've see that you had a lot of work to compose this image...but the result is perfect.

Hi Bulent!

Nice capture! Congrats!

I have added your photograph to my theme on the Washington Monument.

Nice composition, GREAT idea! and shot. Good colours and sharpness. The title also fits well.
Terefic this result with a whopping 1600mm!!
Bit noisy in the sky, but does't matter that much for this shot.
Great work!

Bonjour Bulent
excellent photo ! La taille de cette lune est impressionnante et la compo très bien vue. Bravo pour le titre également.

This is ethereal Bulent - it should be a contradiction in terms to have this nearly transparent veiw of the moon with such a concrete object. It works so wonderfully well and the thought behind this photo is impressive. Well done.Eve

Merhaba Bülent,
what a creative work you did; amazing!
Would be interesting to see how the 'bubble' is looking like on the other pictures without a second exposure on.
Good quality of scan.

Lovely ethereal pic and a great, well realized idea. great, informative note. I just think it doesn't completely fit the 'spirit' of trekearth. But it is a great pic indeed.

Batalay, I love this shot. At first I thought you had to have one heck of a telephoto, but the true story is more impressive. Did you have an idea of what kind of shot you would match the moon with when you put it in the freezer? I am sure you must have made several exposures... did any others work out in interesting ways? And how did you get the second exposure to line up with the first ie. the edges of the frame to line up? I can answer this for motion picture film, but not for stills!

However it was done, it is fantastic. Certainly among the most creative I have seen on the site, where the art is more than just pointing a lens at something interesting, at the right time.

Bu harika bir fotoğraf. çok etkileyici. bu tür anları yakalamak gerçekten çok zor. teşekkürler.

Hello Bulent. An arresting composition, giving us an impression of another, surreal world. The obelisk and the moon- both mystical, symbolic. Both nicely combined. Regards.Klaudio

Excellent result of your experiment, Bulent! Brilliant idea and great title :-)
Very unique! Compliments!

Hi Bulent:

This is a sucessful picture. Great perspective. It is even amazing that this picture is quite old. You kept it so safely. I love this picture. You did a great job. Nothing else to say besides an "amazing word". My admiration. Regards, Sothy

A super picture, love the... everything really. I like the thought of cropping the ground out of the shot so only the sphere top and moon is in shot, which may add another abstract element. Well done.

Ciao. I thought I had already voted this photo, but I didn't... Let me do thast now!
Reading your (excellent) note I cannot but sat that you made a very fine work! In the beginning I thought you had been searching for the right place to capture such a composition by studying the position of the moon in respect to the obelisk, and I discover that you in fact did that, but to make a double shot!!

Bu olağanüstü, muhteşem bir kare... Büyüleyici, şaşırtıcı... Neredeyse bütün güzel sıfatları hak ediyor. Selamlar, saygılar.

Merhaba Bülent Bey,

Hi Bulent,

ps. Your note's awesome too!

Hi Bulent
This is impressive manipulation of a picture before we had digital photography.
I am quite impressed that you managed to place the moon so perfect in the frame months later.
Nice one

This is absolutely amazing shot. So creative work. Congratulations,

Bulent, this is awesome!! You already received so many good feedbacks on this one that one more will seem unsignificant...I know...but still, this is awesome. I meam, the technique you used to do that. Is it common practice for people shooting on films? People had to be pretty ingenious to do what we can do on photoshop in just a couple of clicks now...

Hi Prof,

This is mesmerizing. The photo and the photo notes. I knew such things are possible, this is the second time I am seeing such a thing in TE. This tells me one thing, Reality is Imagination, possible.

Adding you to my fav Prof.

Dear Bulent,
No words to describe your idea and the impressive result !

Hi Bulent
I don't kniow why i never seen your galery before; TE is very rich !
This is a really interesting picture. The moon is so big and you still get a nice sharpness.
Very nice

Out of this world image, very well set up and executed, both technically and artistically - excellent!

Hello , Batalay.
Splendid idea ,great lighting ,very creative indeed ! Perfect result !

Hello Bülent - this is truly exceptional, a masterful way to manipualte reality in the days before photoshop, really brilliant technique, the image quality considering the age of the photo is equally impressive, easily one of the best photos of this monument I've ever seen.

This is probably one of the most interesting pictures I've seen.. it's very surreal and unusual, which is why I love it. I don't know what else to say. Brilliant composition. :)

Thanks for your comment on my Epcot photo. It's funny you should comment today, as I am in Virginia (Centreville) for the weekend visiting my boyfriend. I visit often (the hour-and-a-half flight is so quick and painless), and after my first visit a couple years ago I had fallen in love with the NoVA/DC area! This weekend we will hopefully go to DC, because I still have never seen the cherry blossoms, and I'm hoping there will be some left in bloom, since the Festival ends Sunday!

Tek kelime enfes olmuş.tebrikler

Hi Bulent,
I wanted to comment a picture in your gallery for several reasons and the first one is mainly due to your scientist carrier which seems impressive as i checked your bio. I used too to practised a lot of theorical mathematics and physics in ingeneering studies and for sure i would have loved to have such a teacher like you ! Must be very pleasant to hear you comparing so far concepts to leonardo da vinci and perhaps now to pictures ;) i also appreciate the man you seem to be, very gentle and polite ... Your presence here on TE is a must.
I pick this one cause photogrpahicaly saying this is a marvelous picture, taken at 1600 mm i will have never have in my hands such a zoom !! The result is huge and working in informatics now i can see a "0" and a "1" which is the basics in informatics ;)
So you are true, in each picture we can relate to mathematics or physical concepts
All my congratulations and please keep so involved in TE

well I had a good look into your archive and I must say you made very nice photo's and indeed this is a very good one of yours, you had to capture such a photo in a digital camera, this one is 25 years old. besides some pixeldamage it is a fantastic shot Bulent, I don't know for sure this is your best one, but let's talk about a good capture a fin4e low horizon and a fantastic moon, marvelous job my friend

Stunning double exposure Bulent that makes for an outstanding result. I remember this tech of the 'old days' - not always so easy to do with a result as here. Interesting note of the colour differences on the monument. Presented in i good quality as from being from 82 indicating also a good job by the scanner.

Great photo or photos, great explanation also. I'll make this short because I think everything about how good the photo is has been said. So, great.

I join the crowd, very impressive shoot.

Interesting how you achieved this! It must have taken a lot time measuring and making sure everything was perfect. I'm very attached to photoshop, but probably because I could never achieve anything like this! I'd be scared of wasting the film and it all turning out wrong. You did this incredibly well. Truly amazing. I love the effect it gave the entire image, too!

Hello Bülent,
This one happened to be on the entrance of the site just now. I thought I had critiqued it before. I remember it from my early days on TE.
Every point you got (and they are quite a few :-) is well deserved. I'll remember how much effort you put on this one every time I spend more than a few dozen minutes in PP'ing a photo. You sure live in a world where some things that were soooo complicated 20 years ago are just too easy now.
Warm regards, José.

Magnificaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! +10

Well done I make some sky picture 20 years ago It's a great picture.

Hello Bulent,
Just say it 'amazing captured'

great capture
no more words

On a technical point, there is nothing i can add, but it is so nice that i have to give it some more:-).
But then, what i prefer is the connection between subject, technic and comment, Moon come and go every day. If you don't care it is just a earth sattelit, but if you look closer you can discover incredibles views of it. Sometimes, people have to freeze their mind to forget daily matters and discover how beautifull is the world. That can take a lot of time (to many months).
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Bulent!
I remain without words: magnificent photography. Secondary details like color or sharpness loses any importance.
- Warning: automatic translation

I'm glad you put in the link to this amazing shot Bulent, and it's all the more admirable in that the effect was achieved in-camera. It's all far too easy these days with photoshop.
It's inspired me to try and achieve something similar, on film. Now, when's the next full moon....
Great work.

Hello Bulent,
Sometimes I have crazy ideas, like thinking about how it would be if we( The earth ) had such a close satellite or more than one, or how it be to live in Titan and have Saturn which covers half of the sky with its giant riangs. This picture of yours has just revived these ideas, and I am thankful to you for bringing it here.
Good composition and very well executed.
Friendly regards - Izzet

Unlike everybody else, this is not my favourite shot.

It is a great image for sure. The technical prowesses in producing this picture are REALLY impressive.

Nevertheless, I personally think this is more impressive because it was not done with Photoshop, not because it is a great picture.

This image is somewhat misleading because it depicts a technical prowess but it remains a composition, not a picture.

I think Trek Lens is a site better suited for a composition.

But again, and I mean every word I say: this is GREAT work! Very impressive.

A "home made" photoshop work before the software era !Incredible, and the result is perfect.
"Discussing among physicists", I noted, looking at your picture, how the impression one has of the moon's surface when looking at it by naked eye is so different from the actual image. The sort of human face which one "sees" by naked eye does not exist if one looks at a photograph of the moon, and it is probably an interpretation made by our brain out of the actual position of the moon seas.
I was also reading that the explication of why the moon appears bigger when close to the horizon is very controversial and not clear at all.
Someone says it is because we see the moon next to terrestrial objects, and our brain sets the scale differently. But this does not occur if the moon rises below a mountain, already high in the sky.
My own personal explanation is that the full moon at the horizon is fainter, and there is a different contrast with the black sky. This might be interpreted differently by our brain, compared to a very bright moon over a dark sky.
But I have to admit that I did not find this explanation anywhere else.
If I am right a lunar eclipse should make the moon appear bigger. I do not remember if it does !
Regards Stefano

Hello, Bulent

Quite extraordinary technique for that shot, I truly admire it. I plan to visit Washhington, but equipped only with Nikon D80 and 55-200 lens, unsufficient to achieve that effect. Nevertheless, I am inspired by that photo, I will bear it in my mind there...

Good evening Bulent
I have alway seen this on your intro page, I have always been intrigued to open but have always held back. With a massive 345 points, can I offer any critique worth while to what is an incredible capture on your part. I have read your note and am scratching my head as to how you achieved this but am slowly getting there :-). Technically superb on your part with you the only person who could probably only pull this off. The moon at its best.

I spent the last 5 minutes reading your note trying to understand how you did this and now that i do understand, all i want to say is, INCREDIBLE!

Considering this was film and no digital jiggery-pokery was involved, the final result, while being seamless is most fantastic.

That's really something special! A very creative idea, carried out in an excellent manner. Yes, in the pre-Photoshop era these kind of operations were rather elaborate. But I suppose at least as much fun to do :-)
Greetings, Lia

Hi Bulent !
WOW ! fantastic view... amazing moon...
Great photo ! Congratulation :)
Greetings from Poland !

Good picture there, with a funny concept. Its quite intersting to see the unusal proportions here the Moon and the washington monument. But the kind of experimentation you have put in is great.

hi Bulent,
congratulation for this incredible artwork, I would like to buy a telescope to try some astrophotography shot, you did a great job here, bravo Martou

Merhaba Bülent Bey,
Gerçekten olağanüstü bir fotoğraf, ellerinize sağlık ...

Just utterly astounding, especially how you made it. Us digi-freaks are too spoiled w/ photoshop ;p

Truly Amazing! Your technique reminds me of what my grandfather used to tell me about his photographs from the 60's and 70's. You truly are a master and deserve more than just the few measley points i can offer now. My hat is off to you sir.
With great respect,

Hello Bulent!

I read whole story about this shot and... what can I say. It's unbelievable that it was made efor digital era, using only traditional techniques. Great work! Respect!

Çok güzel bir kare Bülent hocam. Zamanlama , kadraj ve kompozisyon yerli yerinde, çok başarılı. Ellerinize sağlık.

Sevgili Hocam,
Tabii ki gördüm bu fotoğrafı,lakin yorum yazacak cesareti bulamamışım,yeni toparladım..Böyle ay görünce, hemen aklıma gelen sizin bu fotoğrafınız oluyor.Tek kelime ile muhteşem!

What an awesome photo and thank you for the most interesting write-up. I live in the Northern Virginia area and have taken pictures of the monument but yours goes way beyond creative. I work in a library so I plan to look up your books also. This is a super way to learn about photography and so many interesting things about people.

Certainly a very creative idea, Bulent, both the concept and particularly its execution. True, today this is done by Photoshop, so it's not about photography anymore (I saw quite a few shamelessly posted in TE). But your image is indeed a genuine photo, so congratulations. Regards, Daniel

Very creative theme, and very well done. The moon looks wonderful and half transparent as a bubble. Congratulations and regards from Brazil!

Hello Bulent

Hi Bulent

Generally I do not like photos which are not real, but I see your contribution as an artwork, as such I really admire what you have done, especially after reading your note. You did an excellent photo job,no question asked. Well done. Thanks for your critique.

Hi Bulent,

Between reality and fantasy. A masterpiece. Very great work Bulent.

Hi Bulent,
what a great photo of the moon. I dont have much knowledge of photography and how camers work, I noticed jsec really like this photo I know this him very well and hes a great photographer but very hard to please, he a perfectionist and like to have a moan about photo and how they should be, so for jeff to say this is one of the best photo on TE, what a bonus. when i see jeff next he can explain how this shot was done.
Many thanks

What an incredible photo - double exposed film thru a telescope if I understand correctly. I wonder how you could do this with a modern DSLR.

Hi Bulent, I should be jealous & thankful of you at the same time is all i can say, if this is not a trick.

Namaste Professor,
I am astonished when I saw this photo for the first time and planning to write something on it, but failed to collect words. I can only say, the idea is superb and implemented superbly. Great shot, I am keeping it with my favorites. Tfs.
Best wishes.

Dear Bulent,

the photo is great, but the way you created it (as you explained in your note) is for me what the photography is all about, what we are ready to do just because of love to photography. Thank you so much for this :)

Complimenti.
Un caro abbraccio

Hello Professor,

I have been looking at this photo since sometime ago. It is still one of the most incredible photograph of the moon I have ever seen. The moon appears so unreal, and so fragile. It looks as though the monument is about to pop open the moon. At the time of Nikon F, this must have been a very difficult object to document in the way you had done it. No matter how many times I look at the image, no matter how long I observe the image, The initial impression of this image never fade. More than twenty years later the image bring us the same surprise and astonishment. It is an image which will never fade.

A very nice weekend professor,

selam bülent bey,
tek kelime ile muheşem.
mutlu günler.

Something usually seen as monumental is dwarfed by something that's usually seen as small and far away. amazing idea! I love it!

Hi Bulent,
I just cannot believe it!
I have a photo which I uploaded from Cork City, having a huge moon much smaller than this one here but I created it in the photoshop HERE.
In any case the effect is stunning and you have well chosen the obelisk as an object well contrasting with the oval shape of the moon.

Fantastic work. Thank you for that. Such a great picture.

Hi Bulent, simply ... fantastic this pictures, a great idea the obelisk near moon. Nice are the fusion colours from blu to brown. Thank you for post your beautiful pictures

WOW! This is the first impression when this photo caught my eyes. Very excellent shot of the monument with faded moon. I love it. Very well done Bulent.

Simply outstanding clever-fullness and smart image.

عکس و جالبی است و رنگ خیلی خوبی دارد .

WOW. This is a great shot of an ever greater Moon!

It's a good idea in the field of photography. What I wrote in the article is not understandable for us
But you should be praised. Putting film in the freezer!
It's a beautiful moment and register it if you
Light is very good resolution
Beautiful photo frame
Have a nice day

Brilliant idea and very well executed too! Great example of multiple exposure technique!
Best wishes

Good evening Bulent,
Very interesting to read how you managed this composition before digital technology.
It was certainly no easy task, but you did it very skillfully and the result is astounding.
Forget the noise in the sky, it makes it look more authentic.
Best regards.

An amazing photo and your note is very interesting! Congratulations for that great picture

Hello Bulent,

What an incredible photo of the enlarged moon - I have so much to learn about photography my husband told me that it is enlarged by using a telescopic lens... what would I know being an amateur - I thought we were on another planet... ha! ha!
It is a grand photo.

Kindest regards,

Hi Bulent,
I am so glad this was a featured photo today, you have here a very special image. Amazing the sheer size of the moon, and the composition of the obelisk is perfect. Your title is also special. A really fantastic image and note, thank you for sharing.

Hi Bulent,
I was thinking of a long text in praise. The text would contain the words "master" and "light" and many other words to make some sentences :)
Groet, Gerard

Hello Bulent
I have no idea at how and why I just now stumbled upon this amazing shot but being already here, I can't restrain myself to comment.
Poor moon looks like it is going to be pierced by the Washington monument like a soap bubble.
The double exposure technique you used for this is absolutely perfect. I still remember the time when we had to think about every shot we took very carefully. Not being able to see the result on a screen but to have to wait until a roll of film was complete and than send it in for development, only to eagerly await the results back ...., sometimes being disappointed when an entire roll of 24 or 36 exposures where waisted to some silly mistakes in camera settings. Not to speak of the costs of a roll of film then!
Your meticulous noting of the position of the moon in every frame has paid of well in this fine example indeed, the result is mesmerizing.
have a great Sunday
