Mayor of Amsterdam

On 5 October 2017 the immensely popular mayor of Amsterdam, Eberhart van der Laan, passed away.
17 days earlier he said farewell to his beloved city and its inhabitants with a letter entitled "Dear Amsterdammers".
He wrote:
“It was a great privilege to be mayor of the most beautiful and sweetest city in the world. I thank you for the trust you have given me, for your involvement and for all the support and contradiction I have received from you over the past seven years.
Take good care of our city and for each other.”

During my last visit, a week ago, to the former NDSM shipyard last week, I photographed this striking tribute for the former mayor.
A beautifully painted double portrait, en profile and en face combined in one excellent composition.

“Artist duo Telmo Miel has completed an ode to Mayor Eberhard van der Laan at the NDSM shipyard.
The artwork was commissioned by Street.Art Today, the street art platform that opens a museum next year at the NDSM shipyard.
"We were enormously impressed by the news that the mayor resigns," says curator Peter Ernst Coolen. Soon the idea came for an tribute for Van der Laan. "And coincidentally we are good at street art."
Last year around this time he was still at Van der Laan's home. "We were invited to a reception because we had placed an artwork of Anne Frank, and we got to know him as a very nice man and mayor."
Telmo Miel, an artist duo that also creates art for the museum to be opened at the NDSM shipyard, was immediately enthusiastic about the idea of Street.Art Today.
……
"It is a tribute to the most fantastic mayor the city has ever known."

I add the dark frame to the picture to give the posts a screen format of 1920x1080 pixels
The idea is that, if you use the links in the text, you have a full screen image of the picture with the photo in the centre of a dark screen.
This works with the browsers and screens I use, but I’m not sure that everybody will have the same result.

Hello Rob

It's good that the younger generation still remember him and deem him worthy of commemorating through street art. Excellent sharpness, color, and saturation. The woman walking by adds scale. I like the stark contrast between the ho hum tagging at the bottom and the more refined and creative portrait(s) at the top. Tfs!

Hi Rob,very curious and modern way to celebrate the dead mayor of dutch capital. A double portrait from 2 points of view mixed in an unique painting. Artistic work,no dubta,a very different way to celebrate politic men,i seen a big mausoleum in the last week dedicated to the 1st uzbek president dead too in 2017. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello Rob,
This must have been quite a special mayor, to be honored with such a monument. I would have expected to find a brilliant portrait like this in an establishment museum like the Stedelijk. Was it placed at this old shipyard as a tribute to his tolerance for graffiti and informal public art in the city? Was there even an intention that the space under the portrait would be left to the activists at the NDSM to fill with the usual tags?
Whatever the reason for the portrait and its location this is a very enjoyable set of three photos.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Rob,

I am impressed that this mayor was so respected by the people of Amsterdam, that a memorial has been erected so rapidly. It is a very attractive portrait, so modern in its interpretation but, maybe, symbolising the fact that the mayor, Eberhart van der Laan, looked at the city and its problems from more than one angle.

I like the fact that it is so much part of the city, not squirrelled away in some building, where only a section of the population would see it.
I am, however, surprised at the graffiti underneath the portrait. I'm not sure of its meaning but, somehow, it seems a little disrespectful.

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Witaj Rob!
An interesting way to remember about the mayor of Amsterdam.
Picture makes impression.
Good colors, sharpness and light.
Excellent presentation.
Good work.
Good evening.

ciao Rob,
I am moved and bewildered by the relationship that Amsterdaam has with its mayor, in Italy politicians are barely tolerated, in our plurisecolarescicism, even the art and architecture in Italy for 200 years are skeptical, you can find refined architecture but always timid, or shameless, as only criminals can be,
TFS
ciao, Giacomo

Hallo Rob,

Saluti
Carlo

Hi Rob,

The tight frame is putting the artwork in evidence. The point of view is showing the details of the portrait of the mayor and of the graffiti. The sharpness is very good. Have a nice day.

Pierre

Bonjour, cher Rob,

Mooi gedaan, bedankt.

Groeten uit Vlaanderen,
John

Hello Rob, Fantastic that this Mayor of Amsterdam loved the city and the people loved him. Wonderful tribute. How strange is this portrait - profile and en face in one. Picasso made something like this :). And under this masterpiece the ugly scrawls on the wall. Excellent composition.

Kind regards MAlgo

think it is a great idea to show such a beautiful double portrait, a very nice tribute to the mayor of the city, very nice series of three photos, my compliments Ryszard

Hello Rob,
This is an interesting juxtaposition of elements. Of course the mural of the mayor jumps out right away, but it also blends well with the colorful graffiti and the woman walking by. Even the random piece of furniture seems to have its place in this composition. Your chosen crop works very well.

Hello Rob, you chose the right shot for your main post, although the other shots complement this one perfectly.
He sounds like a wonderful man from what I can discern in your notes.
This wonderful piece of art seems a little out of place in the surroundings that you show, am I missing something?
Always thought provoking, an excellent post.
Regards Jean.

Mooi.....
Dat was dan ook een burgemeester ! !
